Classical pianist Dr. Jeeyoon Kim delights audiences with her sensitive artistry, colorful musical expression and insightful commentary from the stage. She made her debut as a concert performer the same year, performing Continued on page 3
2 Letter from the Pastor United Presbyterian Church is for YOUth! You can read that sentence two ways. One is to see only the YOU. We are here for you each of you, personally, individually. We need YOU and we need each other as well. Each of you have Godgiven gifts that YOU and YOU alone possess. No one can do what YOU do, say what YOU say, think like you think and provide the gifts that God has given to YOU alone! Your presence, participation, energy, insight, and prayers are essential for UPC to be the church that God wants and needs us to be. During Summer when travel and vacations come frequently, please remember your church. Pray for us. Continue to remember the financial needs of the church (the lights and missions must continue throughout the year!). The most important factor is to come back as soon as you can following your away time. We need you and your church needs YOU. UPC is also for YOUTH. Recently we received a special edition of Presbyterians Today written by young adults for young adults. The entire edition was dedicated to reaching, maintaining and keeping our Presbyterian youth. I have often heard it said, Our youth comprise the church of tomorrow. I disagree. Our youth are not the church of tomorrow. Our youth are the church of today, the same as our retired community, senior adults, etc. The danger is that if we continue to do church as we always have, the church of tomorrow may not exist. To reach the millennial generation (those born between ), we must do church differently. Fortunately there are new models emerging for just how to do that, but it will require different conversations, new ideas, bold decisions and lots of prayer. It will take each of us listening to our youth and children. They have much to teach us. Several opportunities exist for us to be on board with our youth and children. A group of youth and youth workers will travel to Appalachia (Buckhorn, Ky.) to assist Gayle and Tom Burns at/near the Buckhorn Presbyterian Church and youth home. They will encounter poverty and need on a grand scale. They will work in the Mission Store, sponsored and provided by the Buckhorn Church. They will participate in Bible studies and devotionals. They will do manual labor. They will have fun and enjoy God s beautiful landscape. PYOCA is also a place that our youth and children will be encouraged to attend this summer. Day and week long camp experiences are available to draw our youth closer to God. 90% of youth who attend Christian camps say their camp experience greatly assisted in helping form their leadership skills and nearly 60% indicate that it was their attendance at a Christian camp through which their faith was primarily formed. See Karen Like or Melanie McBride if you, your children or grandchildren are interested in attending PYOCA this summer. Each of YOU are important to me, to this church and to God, to continue to make UPC the special place that it is. Love and Blessings Pastor Mitch Mina with the Notebaert boys on Mother's day. Best Wishes to the Notebaert Family! The Notebaert family Andrew, Angela, Logan, Collin & Carter said good-bye on Sunday, May 25 as Andy is leaving IU to take a wonderful position at Ole Miss! The special Fellowship Hour included a custom made cake, the presentation of a Fond Farewell greeting card and many warm wishes and joyful hugs. Page 2
3 Jeeyoon Kim, continued Beethoven's Piano Concerto no. 2 with the Camerata Orchestra in Busan, Korea. She was awarded a full scholarship to study at Busan National University, where she graduated in 2002 with top honors. Afterwards, Dr. Kim came to the United States for further musical studies, receiving a Master of Music degree in 2005 and a Doctor of Music in piano performance in 2009, both from Indiana University with a full scholarship and a graduation with distinction. Also after her doctorate degree, she received a Master of Music in piano pedagogy from Butler University with a full scholarship. She studied with masters Andrzej Jasiski, Cluade Frank, Menheim Pressler, Reiko Neriki and Shigeo Neriki through master classes, chamber music coaching and her music study at Indiana University. As a recording artist, she released her debut CD in 2007, an album of works by Mozart, Debussy, and Liszt. Now she is in the process of producing the second album, piano works by Schumann. An accomplished piano pedagogue, she is in frequent demand as a master class clinician and presenter at such events as Indiana Music Teachers' Association Competition and Indiana State Fair Piano Competition, as well as Indiana's KEY Piano Competition. The most recent workshops include at the IMTA conference at Indiana University in Bloomington in 2011, Butler University in 2013, and national MTNA conference in New York City in 2012, and Wisconsin in Besides her active national performances, she is on faculty at Butler University, Butler Community Arts School, a director of Broad Ripple Piano Institute and also the Music Director at United Presbyterian Church in Bloomington, Indiana Buckhorn Mission Trip As done annually over the past four or five years, the UPC Youth and Youth Leaders are headed to Buckhorn Presbyterian Church the first week of June for a Mission Trip. This year our pastor, Reverend Mitch Coggin will also be going. The UPC team plans to shove off after morning worship on Sunday, June 1. To those unfamiliar with Buckhorn, it s the largest log cabin church in the world. A Children's Home is in close proximity. Gayle (formerly Administrative Assistant for the POV) and Tom Burns are the Certified Ruling Elders at Buckhorn. This church and its community heavily rely upon a Mission Store which contains donated clothes, knick knacks, kitchen items, housewares, small appliances and etc. The UPC team would welcome your donations of such items for the Mission Store. Please bring your items to donate to the church by Saturday, May 31 so that the UPC Youth can take the items with them. Donors are also asked to call the church to make drop off arrangements or to have someone gladly pick up your donations. It s a week-long mission trip and your prayers will be welcome for a productive and faith-building trip for our youth and youth leaders! 5 His Eyes Update We acknowledge that we have your permission to send you these updates every month. It is a privilege we do not take lightly. That you care, that you pray, that you help us in so many ways is humbling and just very cool. Keeping our subject line in mind...we will be working in as many italicized synonyms for may as we can. We hope it gets your seal of approval. We took creative license in not sending out an update in April. Special dispensation due to the fact we were in the middle of hosting four groups in 36 days. Permit me to tell you that they did quite a bit to help His Eyes, and we hope in concurrence they were all impacted to greater heights for Christ. We are all in agreement they should return. If you would condone us an indulgence before we continue the normal update... for those in the Jacksonville Florida area, we are asking for help for Valerie in June. She will be representing His Eyes at Freedom Fest with Christ s Church June 28th and 29th. She needs a place that would sanction her stay (probably arriving the 26th or 27th, leaving the 30th), possible help with her freedom to be transported while she is there, and definitely the allowance of some volunteers to help her man the booth we will have at the church, talking to people about the mission and selling coffee bean bracelets. Please write us if you are up for any or all of that. April also saw the empowerment of our fleet...the Ford that was purchased from the fundraising at Camp Allendale last summer has arrived in Tegucigalpa! There is some body work and those great bars on the back and some other minor improvements needed, but we look forward to putting it to use very soon...more on that next week. Promise you will pray for us? 1. That our hearts would be general admission for God s will to guide all our decisions, especially for the long term plans of the mission. 2. For continued financial endorsement of the many fronts the mission is fighting. Things are growing, in the scope and reach, and this means more sources of funding are needed. Praying for the funds to come in, as well as new avenues to open for us to make new contacts. 3. For physical, spiritual, and emotional strength, acceptance and encouragement for us and the entire staff of His Eyes. Thanks His Eyes 3036 E Bricklin Ct. 6 Exceptional Mother s Day Service at UPC It was a Sunday of joy, tears, rousing song, inspiring scripture and moving homily! Mother s Day, May 12, 2014 was exceptional at United Presbyterian Church. It was a time to celebrate motherhood, hear the Chancel Choir give their final performance before Summer hiatus and bid fond farewell to our children s choir director. Our pastor, the Reverend Mitchell Coggin opened the Mother s Day service with warm welcome and announcements. William Huyler and Dr. Jeeyoon Kim then presented a stunning performance of There Is a Balm in Gilead. It was a marvel of piano and vocal mastery. UPC s Commissioned Ruling Elder (CRE) Alejandra Haddad served as worship leader. Her son Sami took to the pulpit for a moving Call to Worship followed by him and the Chancel Choir leading the singing of the opening hymn, Cuando el Pobre/When a Poor One. Emotion was high as each Haddad child took to the pulpit. We could scarcely believe they are now all young adults the eldest, Aida, now a divinity graduate student at Princeton Theological Seminary; Sami is a junior at IU and Yasmina just completed her freshman year at Vanderbilt University. Some in the congregation beamed, others wiped a tear from their eyes as we watched the Haddad kids present the word of God to us under the supervision of their glowing mother and with their proud father in the front pew. We watched them grow up! Yasmina came to the pulpit and led us in an inspiring Prayer of Confession and Assurance of Pardon written by Reverend Coggin. Mina (that s what we all call her) invited all to participate in The Passing of the Peace. Then the children of UPC were delighted as Mina helped them present the Mother s Day Gift to the women of the church. There were smiles from one side of the sanctuary to the other as the children scampered about individually presenting a fresh cut, pink carnation to the ladies. Dr. Kim then directed the Chancel Choir in singing an amazing rendition of Revive Us Again with Carissa Tucker on piano. It was as beautiful as it was moving. This Chancel Choir offering was exceptional. Daughter Aida left no doubt in our minds of why she is in seminary as she presented a heartfelt prayer of dedication for the offering. Dr. Kim and Bill Huyler returned to the chancel and presented Give Me Jesus. It was astonishing! We were stunned into a silence of awe followed by a response of gratitude. Aida s reading of Psalm 139 and Alejandra s sermon, Tender, Unconditional & Eternal could not have been more appropriate. The sermon was an exquisite blending of ideas on the love of God and the love of a mother. Many were moved as well as inspired by Alejandra s sermon and Aida s reading of the scripture. The congregational singing of Lord, You Have Come to the Lakeshore, Alejandra s benediction and Jeeyoon s postlude perfectly closed the service. As Alejandra, Aida, Sami and Yasmina shook hands with the fellowship filing out of the sanctuary; it was the perfect picture of It takes a village to raise a family! The specialness of the day continued as the congregants gathered in Fellowship Hall to bid a fond farewell to Mr. Huyler. We chose not to sign a Good Bye card, but rather a Thank You card. Bill has spent the past year not only being the director of UPC s Voices of the World Children s Choir, but also worshipping with us, singing in the Chancel Choir and being an integral part of our fellowship. He s traveling to Australia to do his student teaching and we hope he ll be back with us in For He s a Jolly Good Fellow was heartily sung as Bill cut a cake emblazoned with G day Mate! See You Soon! This was truly an amazing day in the life of United Presbyterian Church. It was all taped for YouTube. You won t regret checking it out at Additions to Reaching U.P. Do you have something the congregation should know about? Is there something you would like to share? Please any submission for Reaching U.P. to upcbloomington@gmail.com, before the 15th of each month. Monthly Newsletter of United Presbyterian Church, 1701 E. 7 Financial Report We came out in the red again in April. We took in a total of $13, for the month and our expenses were $15,840.28, giving us a negative cash flow of $2, for April and a positive cash flow of $1, for the yearto-date. INCOME EXPENSES GAIN/LOSS OFFERING MISSION FUND R. TOTAL APR. 12, , , , , TO DATE 53, , , , , , While we are still in positive territory for the year to date, our monthly cash flow has been negative for the last three months. If this trend continues we will likely have spent more than we have taken in by the end of May. Vacation time is fast approaching. Please keep your pledges up to date during the lean summer months. Once again, support for the One Great Hour of Sharing collection was very generous. Your donations totaled $ It s that time of year, again, when we need to ask you to pay your per-capita, if you are able. The amount for 2014 is $29.33 per member. As of April 31 st, we ve only received $ toward our annual per-capita obligation of $ Don Root, Stewardship Chairman Notes of Thanksgiving Thank you to all the people that purchased flowers to support the youth activities this summer. The funds raised will supplement the Buckhorn mission trip and Camp Pyoca fees. - UPC Youth Dear UPC, Please accept this $50 contribution from the Sunday 6 p.m. Overeaters group in appreciation for allowing us to use the Anderson Parlor for our weekly meetings. Thank you so much for supporting our group through providing meeting space. We try to be good stewards of the space and encourage appropriate use of the church facilities; if there is anything we need to change or do, please let me know. Sincerely, Harriett, Overeaters Secretary Dear UPC, Thank you for the lovely flowers, breakfast, and the lovely service. Also thank everyone from the church for being such good friends to Ruth and Ralph through the years. They loved their church. - Sandra Deckard and the family of Ruth Young United Presbyterian Church Page 7
8 Inside Story Headline I m sending you this because United Presbyterian Church has been a faithful and generous supporter of the Pentecost Offering. As you may recall, congregations may keep 40% of the offering to be used for the church s ministry to children, youth and young adults. Although we are still a few weeks away from collecting this offering, I want to share a unique opportunity with you to promote our Young Adult Volunteer program with your gifts this year. This summer at General Assembly, we will celebrate the 20 th Anniversary of the Young Adult Volunteer Program. As a way of supporting this important ministry to young adults, we are hoping to triple the number of participants in this vital ministry. A portion of the Pentecost Offering that is sent to the Presbyterian Mission Agency supports the Young Adult Volunteer (YAV) Program. Serving in one of 15 communities nationally or 7 communities internationally, the Young Adult Volunteers (YAVs) spend an intense and focused year in Christian community, practicing simple living, vocational discernment, and meaningful involvement with various communities of need. In order to keep the cost low for a young adult ($3000 for national sites; $4000 for international sites), the YAV Program itself must be heavily subsidized by other gifts gifts from churches like yours. The impact of A year of service for a lifetime of change on these young adults is phenomenal. One-third of all YAV alumni are now ordained clergy in the PC(USA). The other two-thirds provide important ministry and service with their local faith communities. This year, I am asking United Presbyterian Church to include the YAV Program as part of the ministry that you are doing individually as a congregation. Would you please contribute a portion of your retained Pentecost Offering to the direct support of our YAV Program? Your church support may be sent through your normal receiving channels, but designated as YAV Program: # D Thank you for considering this opportunity both to serve your community and to allow even more young adults to join in this life-changing program. If you have any questions, or would like more information, please let me know. I m here to help. Thanks! 9 Social Media A term that refers to how people can interact online. Multiple people create, share, and exchange information and ideas through networks and communities. Why do we use it: To communicate, to connect, and to engage. UPC and Social Media Easy and effortless - it doesn't take commitment to spread information on these sites Variety helps engage a wide variety of individuals Viral it can expand beyond the intended audience - introducing new people to UPC What sources of media does UPC use: youtube, facebook, blogs (through UKirk) Youtube: Facebook: Pyoca Pyoca is ready to open for summer camp. If you have not already signed up please contact Karen Like (klike@earthlink.net) to let her know if you would like to attend. The church is focusing their financial support on those active youth members. Please don't hesitate to tell your friends about this exciting opportunity, they are welcome to come and pay their own way. Sanctuary Flowers Your support is needed to help enhance the beauty of our sanctuary with fresh flowers each week. Sanctuary flowers can be donated in honor or in memory of someone special, a birthday, an anniversary, a special event, or just to the Glory of God. This is a beautiful way to acknowledge those who mean so much to us and to let others enjoy the beauty. To place sanctuary flowers for a special occasion or to honor a loved one, see the sign-up sheet posted opposite the church office. If you would like the church to arrange for the ordering and delivery of the flowers, the cost is $25. For further information please see Souheil Haddad. If you would like to submit an article to be featured on the front page of, please don't hesitate. Send your submission to UPCBloomington@gmail.com United Presbyterian Church Page 9
