3 This week and next, our Gospel readings invite us to consider John the Baptist and his relationship to Jesus. John the Baptist appears in the tradition of the great prophets, preaching repentance and reform to the people of Israel. To affirm this, Luke quotes at length from the prophet Isaiah. John baptizes for repentance and for forgiveness of sins, preparing the way for God's salvation. The three Synoptic Gospels Mark, Matthew, and Luke attest to the importance of the baptism of John in preparing for Jesus. Only the Gospel of Luke, however, extends the connection between these two men to their birth. The first two chapters of Luke's Gospel contain the Infancy Narrative, which tells about the births of John the Baptist and Jesus. These stories set the stage for the beginning of Jesus' public ministry in chapter 3. The evangelist Luke is the author of the Gospel that bears his name, and he also wrote the Acts of the Apostles as a continuation of the story of Jesus and the Church. In these two works, Luke's sense of time and history emerges. He identifies three epochs of salvation history: the time before Christ, the time of Christ, and the time of the Church and the Holy Spirit. In today's Gospel reading, as elsewhere, John the Baptist is presented as the figure who bridges the time before Christ and prepares the way for Christ's own ministry. In today's Gospel we also note Luke's attention to political and historical detail. Luke shows that salvation is for all people and situated in world events. Therefore, Luke lists the political and religious leaders at the time of John's appearance in the desert. Salvation is understood as God's breaking into this political and social history. John's preaching of the coming of the Lord is a key theme of the Advent season. As John's message prepared the way for Jesus, we too are called to prepare ourselves for Jesus' coming. We respond to John's message by repentance and reform of our lives. We are also called to be prophets of Christ, who announce by our lives the coming of the Lord, as John did. RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) This is an opportunity for those interested in learning what the Catholic Church teaches and wish to be baptized, or to complete their Sacraments of Initiation with the Sacraments of Holy Communion and Confirmation. Ministry & Organizations Homebound Ministry Please, contact the rectory if you, a family member or a friend is unable to come to church. We have people to visit at home and our Eucharistic Ministers can bring Communion. Please, call us to make arrangements. Knights of Columbus Our parish Council #14326, meets the second Tuesday of every month in the hall at SJV at 7:30PM. Choir Rehearsals are in the church at OLOV. The children s/youth choir rehearse Tuesdays at 5PM. Adults rehearse Wednesdays from 7-9PM. Prayer Groups Rosary and Divine Mercy OLOV: in the church at 4PM every weekday (except legal holidays) we recite the rosary. Lord of Peace Prayer Group Our Lord of the Peace Group meets at SJV at 7pm each Friday This group is part of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal. Bible Study Check bulletin for classes and times. Next session will begin September 11, 2018 with Deacon Frank Bevvino. Bereavement Support Group OLOV offers A 10 week Bereavement Support Group for people mourning the death of a loved one. 7 ADVENT & CHRISTMAS AT OLOV On Saturday, December 15, 2018, the Social Justice Committee is going to be delivering small Poinsettia plants to our homebound parishioners. We are looking for volunteers who could drive and deliver the plants. It is a wonderful way to extend Christmas joy to our brothers and sisters. For those who cannot come to Mass, it is a great pleasure to know their parish family remembers them and is praying for them. We will be meeting at St. John Vianney in the hall at 10:00AM. He has two feast days in the calendar: one commemorating his birth, and the other his death. There are only three nativities in our calendar: for Jesus, for Mary, and for the Baptist. John's birthday is reckoned according to the schedule given in Luke's Gospel of the angels announcement to Mary. The angel tells her that her cousin Elizabeth is in the sixth month of pregnancy, and so Mary hastens to help her. Reckoning Christmas as December 25, we count backwards nine months to March 25 for the Feast of the Annunciation. Then we count forward three months to June 24 for John the Baptists birth. Halfway to Christmas, his nativity gives ample reason for rejoicing in the summer, and his symbols of fire and water are used playfully in bonfires and dives into the sea. Even at the polar opposite of Christmas in the calendar, the energy of Christ's birth in the Incarnation provides cause for rejoicing. Page 8
