1 The Window The Newsletter of St. James Episcopal Church in Fremont, CA CALLED TO SERVE IN NEW AND LOVING WAYS. Calling a new Rector September 2010 As last months Window went to press we were able to announce the calling of a new rector, Rev Lori Walton, to St James'. I was delighted that so many of the Vestry were able to stand with me when I made the announcement on Sunday, August 1st because the interview process was an incredible act of teamwork. Our final three candidates each came for a two day interview process which began with a potluck dinner with the Vestry and Search teams. This informal start enabled each of them to relax (only a little) and begin to get to know us. The Search team who had already met or spoken to them were there to give them a little support. Each candidate then got to spend a day with us on campus which included leading a Eucharist service (with sermon) 1-1 time with both the Jr. and Sr. Warden, a tour of campus, lunch and a two hour interview with the whole Vestry. In addition to this each candidate met with Bishop Marc and spoke to Canon Michael. No stone was left unturned! The Vestry then had two further evenings to discuss their thoughts and vote. When we gathered on the first evening I had no clue as to how long the process would take. We had not discussed our feelings in between in an effort to allow the candidates and each other an even chance. Everyone agreed the final three candidates given to us by the Search team were a good fit for St James' and a full discussion of each one took place before a unanimous vote was taken to call Lori. All the steps I had been given then had to be followed to inform the Bishop and Canon Michael prior to calling Lori who accepted our call immediately. It was with great joy, and pride in the work of all the teams involved, that I was able to announce Lori's calling to St James'. And that second evening meeting the Vestry had booked - we all got to stay home! Jan Scrutton, Sr. Warden

2 Stewardship Corner Stewardship Is... Christian Stewardship is grateful and responsible use of God s gifts in the light of God s purpose as revealed in Jesus Christ. Christian stewards, empowered by the Holy Spirit, commit themselves to conscious, purposeful decisions. Stewardship is lived out in: Living and telling the Good News; Sharing God in seeking justice, peace, and the integrity of creation in an interdependent universe; Wisely employing God-given human resources, abilities, and relationships; Sharing the material resources we hold and giving them in service, justice, and compassion; Providing for future generations, sharing in the life, worship, and responsible stewardship of the Church and of its mission. Both for the individual and for the community, stewardship is a joyful act for the sake of God s world. Stewardship has also been defined as: What I do, with all that I have, after I say, I believe. Using the gifts God has given us to do the work God is calling us to do. The above description of stewardship is from the Stewardship Department of the Diocese of California. Stewardship is a word that confuses a lot of people, me included. When you hear the word stewardship, what comes to mind? My first reaction is money and fund-raising. In looking for a definition of stewardship, we need to understand that stewardship is not really about money but about our relationship with God. It is more than money; it is giving of ourselves, putting our faith into action, and knowing that every gift is important. And, at the end of the day, what a wonderful feeling! As fall approaches and we begin our Pledge Program for another year, please take a few minutes to think about your relationship with God, how giving of your time, talent, and treasure might help you to grow spiritually, and what is God calling you to do? Gail Blalock, Stewardship Chair Kathy s departure With the ending of our interim time and the calling of a new rector we have to say our goodbyes. Kathy+ will be leaving us on Sunday, September 12th and in the run up to then we will have time to get together in a number of ways. Bring a dessert or side dish and join us to party in the Parish Hall. Air hockey, Fooze ball and Ping Pong will be available as well as chance to celebrate the time Kathy has spent with us. Sunday, Sept 12th - One service at 10am with a Parish Photo being taken afterwards. Followed by coffee and cake! The Window September

3 By Kathy Well, we are crossing the bridge together for the last time. My computer went away last May and I have replaced it. The new one is different from my other computer, of course. It has different features and the keyboard touch is different. The little whirring fan that keeps it cool sounds different and the display looks different, mostly in subtle ways. I am adapting and I think the new computer and I will do well together. I have created new folders for filing away things. I have decided to do things a little differently with this new computer, hopefully to increase my productivity and my organization. As I reflected on this technology switch-over I saw parallels in the gradual waning of my own ministry at St. James and the excitement of watching the congregation prepare for a new rector. Lori will be different from the last one or the ones before that. Some features will be the same, some will be different on a subtle level and some of the function will be markedly different. Some of the things that stay the same are doing services, preaching sermons, talking to parishioners, attending/leading meetings, prayers and visits, offering encouragement and consolation. The gifts (the features) of each new Rector are to be discovered, celebrated and utilized. Undiscovered and new gifts are part of the package, too, for each of you as well as the new Rector. Change is a good thing: I won t say it is an easy thing. But you are capable of taking on the tasks that need to be done, evaluating the programs that need to wax and wane, and keep on praying. That is essential to ministry in any context. God bless you in the coming years. You have been faithful in the process; continue to be faithful in living out your call as missionaries and companions on this holy journey with God. Annual Flatlanders Campout Attention Ladies! 4 The St. James Endowment The following shows how the Endowment fund has grown since Current market conditions and the general sluggish economy have affected the Fund, both in terms of the number of donations as well as the performance of our investments. It may be difficult to find A bright side but I am encouraged by the recovery we have seen in the last 18 months. The Shell Society is Not a Secret Club If you are new to St. James you probably don t know what the Shell Society is. In fact, you may be a long term member of the Parish and not understand its meaning. The St. James Shell Society was established in 2003, at about the time our Endowment was established. It is meant as a way to acknowledge those members of St. James who have thought of the Church when writing their will or trust. Gifts to St. James take many forms, including listing the Church as beneficiary of a portion of a life insurance policy, an IRA or 401k plan. It may be a gift of stock, property, or it may simply be a portion of the remainder of their estate. Planned gifts may be directed to a specific ministry, activity or project which has special meaning to the individual, a stained glass window for example. A gift may also be directed to one of our Endowment funds which will go on giving in perpetuity. A donor may also choose not to specify how a gift is to be used or distributed, in which case the vestry would decide how to best make use of the gifts left by a donor. Members of the Shell Society are also honored by the Diocese as members of the Bishop s Society. Their names are added to a permanent plaque in Grace Cathedral and are invited to Bishop s Society events. If you are interested in learning more about the Shell Society or ways to pass along your legacy to future generations at St. James, please speak with an Endowment board member. 6 Godly Play Announcement Godly Play, our program for children 4 years old through 6th grade, resumes on September 19, We meet from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in Room 4 of the Education Building. At 11:00 a.m. children are escorted to the worship service to sit with their families during Communion. Godly Play is an interactive story and art time for children of all ages, developed by Jerome Berryman, now an Episcopal priest in Houston, Texas. It shares roots in the Montessori method of hands-on learning with the Liturgy of the Good Shepherd, developed by Sofia Cavaletti, an Italian theology professor, who learned from Maria Montessori and taught Jerome Berryman. At St. James', we have been practicing the reflective storytelling of our faith found in Godly Play for at least seven years. We consider the art/work response of the children to be their prayer time, an opportunity for them to interact with the story materials and language, the open wondering questions, and their life situations as their faith and relationship with God develops. The Godly Play room is a special place for the children to grow in community with one another and to begin learning about the Eucharist through our "feast" time each week. Some of the words from the "Big Church" are incorporated into the Godly Play hour. Sometimes music is included as well. Each Godly Play hour requires a storyteller and a doorperson to lead the time. These leaders, with their different roles, help the children feel safe in the space. The leaders pay careful attention to each one throughout the time. Lessons taught can include getting ready, giving thanks, and practicing self-control. These are life lessons and not learned in one week or one year. They are lessons we continue to relearn and deepen throughout our lives. All children are welcome at St. James' and especially at Godly Play! Join us this year! We are looking for volunteers to work with Godly Play on a regular basis to provide consistency. Please talk to Brian Cochran Brian Cochran The next issue of The Window is in October. We welcome your comments, pictures, essays, poems, cartoons, artwork, newsworthy items of interest, any group activity information and reviews. your submission to window@saintj.com October Deadline: Sept 15th Pledge Sunday is Coming! October 24, 2010 It seems like only yesterday we were talking about Dedication Sunday (in 2009) and now it s that time of year again. But Stewardship is not just the annual pledge drive; rather, it is receiving all the gifts God has given us and discerning how to use them. It includes joyful acts of thanksgiving in response to God s abundant gifts. How blessed we are to be able to share our gifts at St. James! The Stewardship Committee has planned activities during the month of October that will culminate with Pledge Sunday on October 24. We are calling it Cottage Dinners to Celebrate St. James New Beginnings and hope everyone will take part. The Cottage Dinners will be small dinners (and one lunch) of approximately parishioners each held at the church. It will be an opportunity to share dreams and hopes for the parish, consider the many gifts God s has given us and how we are going to use them, and to rejoice in St. James rich history and bright future. It will also be a wonderful opportunity to get to know our new Rector Lori Walton and to join in Christian fellowship. Dates for the dinners are October 7 th, 8 th, and 12 th, with a lunch scheduled for October 15 th ; reservations will begin in mid September. Additional information will be available as the dates draw near. Pledge Sunday will be held on October 24, 2010, when every member of our congregation will be asked to complete a Pledge Card during the worship service. The Stewardship Committee will host an expanded coffee hour so that we may celebrate New Beginnings together as faithful stewards of God s blessings and love. Please mark your calendar to be sure to be in church October 24 th. We hope everyone will be able to join us at one of the dinners or the lunch and also on Pledge Sunday. If you are unable to attend, we will be happy to send you a pledge card. The Stewardship Committee is excited about the future of St. James and New Beginnings as we move forward together. 7 New Faceted Windows Just a few short months ago Linda Nelsen, Margaret Rainey, Scott Kennedy, Jan Scrutton and myself had a meeting with Wesley Hogan from Hogan Art Glass. Wesley stood with us inside our Church looking at the Narthex. We brainstormed ideas of what we wanted depicted in the new windows. St. James became a focal point. Since he was a fisherman it was only natural for there to be fish. When the net was discussed I think we all saw it coming together. We stood there with goose bumps visualizing our new windows. Wesley, being raised Anglican, in Ireland talked about the importance of the holy sacraments. It was discussed that in the new doors we could place windows and in those windows we would show our most holy sacraments of baptism and communion. The process continued with sketches of the windows hung so we could get feedback from the congregation. The feedback was helpful and a few changes were made to the sketches. The glass was then cut and twenty four members of the congregation went to Hogan's studio and faceted pieces of art. Our windows were formed by pouring epoxy around the faceted pieces. The windows were installed and then blessed on July 11, We will be placing plastic covering over the inside of the windows to prevent any fingers from being injured, the faceted glass has sharp edges. It was a pleasure for me to work on this project, from the beginning to the completion. Thank you to all who have worked and supported this project. 8 781a E. McGlincy Ln Campbell, CA (408) Fax (408) License # hoganstainedglass@hotmail.com August17 th, 2010 St James Episcopal Church Cabrillo Drive Fremont CA, I received a phone call from Mary asking me to consider new stained glass windows for the front hallway. On arriving to your church I was inspired and went toward the altar and looked around. I saw the most wonderful spiritual window that I made some time ago. Looking down from the altar at the existing two side panels, I thought about some ideas right there; first how to communicate with the colors in the large window, second how to communicate with the angles in the design of the large window. This is very important so that the new windows be in communication with the main window. While I was at our church I met some very charming ladies who inspired me even more and suddenly it came to all of us that why not in the left panel design St. James and in the right panel a fishing net? St James was a fisherman, and this was a perfect way to show him gathering in his flock of people. I thought to use many colors in the fish to represent all of the people of the earth. I then had to think about the two doors, which gave the perfect opportunity for baptism and the body and blood of Christ. I am so grateful for your church, because everybody trusted me with the design and glass craftsmanship. As you know I invited people to come to my studio to take part in some of the faceting of the glass, so people could say for years to come that they were part of the window. Thank you very much; it has been a pleasure working with your church. Wesley J. Hogan The Window September

9 Goodbye to Kathy To try and write something for the Window about Kathy's departure is hard because when someone leaves our reactions are personal. Although many emotions can be shared by a group the true sorrow when things change relates to our individual relationships with that person. This is not the place for me to express my personal feelings. In writing that though I am reminded of exactly what Kathy has done for us here at St James'. She has shown us the importance of those individual relationships. It might be called Pastoral Care but in real terms it is about being there with people where they need you to be. Kathy has shown many of our congregation the love and support of Christ in the times when they needed it - as well the support of another individual reaching out to them. She has shown us that as a congregation that is something we need and value. She has shown us that at the center of our community is a need to remain pastoral even as we develop programs. I know I will miss that relationship I have with her but I hope we as a community remember the lessons she has bought us. And of course enjoy a last party with her to send her on her way. Jan Scrutton, Sr. Warden Available for Lunch We're going to take up as much of Kathy's+ time before she has to move on as we can! Join us on Sunday, Sept 5th for a special trip to Newark Buffet (endless delicious Chinese cuisine), as we get a chance to mix, mingle and lunch with Kathy+. Yes, it's Labor Day weekend, but we'd can't miss the opportunity! 25 of us have already signed up! What a fun time this looks to be! Feel free to carpool, or meet there at 12:30pm. We're going to attempt to get a special section reserved for us, especially if we get great interest and sign-ups. Lunch is dutch treat, as we enjoy great fellowship and a great meal, and a fun time to visit with Kathy and St. James' friends. Cost of the buffet is $ There is a 10% senior discount, but we'll use our 15% discount for the entire group instead. The $15 price includes tip. Beverages are extra. Newark Buffet is at Newark Blvd., in the Lido Faire Shopping Center, between Cedar and Jarvis. A sign-up sheet is posted in the Parish Hall. Little Church The Wardens and Facilities Cluster invite anyone who is interested in a new Little Church Committee to join them for a meeting in EB1 on Tuesday, Sept 21st at 7pm. We know many people love our Little Church and are concerned with its upkeep. We have currently a small budget for this work and a quote for glass restoration but it is important to develop a plan for the future care of the building. If you are unable to attend this meeting but are interested in being part of a committee please let Jan, Mary, Scott or Charlie know. 10 Men's Trip to Blue Lake Springs, Arnold, CA Hello St James' folks, we had another successful trip to Blue Lake Springs, Arnold, CA. Great fellowship and gave some newer members of St James' a chance to get better acquainted. The accommodations this year were more modest and this made it more affordable for all. A total of 17 of members old and new made the trek to Arnold. The golf outing was a little more subdued without Charlie Dickinson, Al Casas and Tim Koonze. Bud and I were competing for the highest golf score and I unfortunately won. Our hacking did not bother Brian Whitaker and he landed I believe an 89. On Friday night after golf with had a small feast complete with steaks, salmon, salad, potatoes, fine beverages and cookies made by Linda Nelsen. It was during that time many of us got together shared stories and got to know each other better. Saturday was complete with some of fishing, napping and a hike led by Dave Nelsen. Here's Dave's recap. To elaborate on the Saturday activities; Those pictured in Bruce's photo (plus Bruce) drove to Ebbetts Pass and hiked 2 miles to Upper Kenny lake along the Pacific Crest Trail. Weather was fantastic, exercise and scenery was great, fishing was nonproductive and the beer at Lake Alpine lodge was cold and refreshing. About half the group went to town on Saturday and had a splendid meal. The rest of us had a wonderful spaghetti feed. Sunday morning we packed off and headed down the hill to recoop after a weekend of fun. The attendees include the following: Bob Bell, Bob Bynum, Mike Dearborn, Mike Egan, Gregg Feeney, Tim Feeney, Ralph Locher, Greg Miller,Dave Nelsen, Bud Pearson, Bruce Roberts, Greg Scheuffele, Mike Scrutton, Ken Trant, Brian Whitaker, Scott Whitaker, Rod Whitehouse. Mark your calendar for next year July 28 - July 31, We'll be returning again to the same area of Blue Lake Springs. If we have a 100% return from 2010 plus Al, Charlie, George and Tim, then we are on to 3 cabins. The price is reasonable and the fellowship 'priceless". Thanks, Gregg Feeney Picture taken by Bruce Roberts. Left to Right (Rod Whitehouse, Ralph Locher, Mike Scrutton, Mike Dearborn, Greg Scheuffele, Dave Nelsen.) The Window September
