THE GOOD News W h a t c o a t U n i t e d M e t h o d i s t C h u r c h TIME OUT!!! Clocks, watches, computers, sundials, and other time gadgets control most of our lives. We use them to order our day. We go to bed by them. We get up by them. We get paid by hours. We set days off and vacations by calendars. We measure sick days and birthdays by time pieces. In sports a time out is called and all activities cease. In the training of our children we put them in time out. All play stops and they sit. In the Bible there is a beginning and an end. Jesus talks about the timing of his ministry and that his time had come. References are made to the end time. Suppose we took TIME out of our life. How would we define ourselves? How would we order our lives and relationships? How would we worship? How would we know when to worship? When we look at Eternal Life, time does not figure in the picture. There is no calendar to tell you how long you will be in heaven. It is just forever. With time removed from our lives we are forced to define ourselves from a different perspective. We are who God made us to be, not what we do with our lives. Try detaching who you think you are from what you do. Take a Time Out and just be the person God made. In that moment there is no past and no future, just the present. In this present moment what do you think of your self? Suspend all judgment on your life and the actions of others and just focus on the person. There is no good or bad to your life in this moment. You just are in the presence of the Creator. Most of the fears, anxieties, stressors, conflicts are linked to time. Take time out of the equation and the other issues disappear. Before you declare me insane, I would suggest that our obsession with time has driven all of us insane. Not only have we been driven toward insanity but we have allowed time to rob us of the gifts of peace and joy. The most frequent used excuse for not enjoying life is I don t have time. If you removed time would you enjoy life! I believe we are addicted to the clock and calendar. Until we break that addiction we will always use time as the excuse to stay stressed out and broken. 2 (Continued from Page 1) If we are following Jesus we have to put our watches aside. Can you see yourself saying to Jesus Jesus, hurry up and do the healing, we have a schedule to meet. We have places to be and things to do. We have to move on. The Bible says to BE STILL AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD. Take the time factor out and your life will be more enjoyable. I can hear your excuses now, but that is simply the defense to your addiction. TAKE A TIME OUT AND THINK ABOUT IT. -Pastor Bob Plan on coming out to The Whatcoat Trustee Banquet Award & Variety Show August 2 & 3, :00p.m. Tickets are $20.00 and may be obtained from any Trustee or at the Church office Proceeds to benefit the Walton H. & Anna Lee Simpson Center News from Sunday School Summer Sunday School is going great! The kids really seem to be enjoying the CBN: Superbook series! Parents please ask your children questions about these exciting movies. It is a great opportunity to discuss these traditional bible stories that we all know and love! Please make sure that you sign out your kids BY 10:55 to enable teachers enough time to attend 11:00 AM service. Fall is quickly approaching and there may be some changes in our classrooms to accommodate all the changing ages of our children. I ll be contacting you to find out what grade your child is going into. Also, if you or a family member is planning on starting your child in Sunday School this fall, please let me know. I want to make sure we have materials needed! You can call me at home , and leave a message if I am not at there. Let me know the age/grade the child is and their name along with a number you can be contacted at. We have classes starting at age 4 and the nursery is available for younger children. Have a safe summer and enjoy the remaining vacation time. LeeAnn Pritchett 2

Finance Committee The Finance Committee met on July 17 th, 2013 and discussed the upcoming budget process for In order to meet the timely requirements for submission to the Charge Conference meeting in the fall, the committee decided to start the Stewardship Campaign in the coming months. We will be using pledge cards similar to last year s campaign and hope our church members will return the cards by September 15, Please give prayerful consideration in filling out the pledge cards when you receive them. From these pledges our 2014 budget for Whatcoat Church will be constructed. The Finance Committee also gives thanks to those dedicated counters, past and present, who graciously serve the church by remaining after the last service, accurately recording the weekly offerings, and making the bank deposit. This is truly a team effort and special thanks goes out to Angel Stark who schedules the counters monthly and volunteers when substitutes are needed. News from the Nursery Missing!!!!! We recently had a parent donate an orange tinted clear bouncy ball. However, by the following Sunday morning, it was gone. If you happen to know where it is, please let us know or better yet, just return it! There is also a small blue hook-on-table chair missing from the fellowship hall. It is used as a high chair for luncheons, but it is also used for meetings twice a week. If anyone knows where it is, please return it to Fellowship Hall. Thank You! WHATCOAT UNITED METHODIST MEN Randy Chambers, the executive director of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Delmarva Region was recently cited in the local newspaper for his efforts to expand the ministry to high school and college athletes in our immediate locale. He has spoken to the Whatcoat Methodist men on several occasions in the past and we support him with our donations. It is heartwarming to see the number of Wesley College football players meet in the centerfield after the game and kneel in prayer. Opposing teams often join in giving thanks to the Lord. On a sunny autumn day you may see Billy Webb, Travis Webb, Tom VanDrunen, Warren Glenn, Bob Contino and Bill Maroon in the stadium observing these sessions. Randy has increased the size of the gatherings significantly. Also giving thanks to the Methodist Men was Kelly Conaway for her campership to the Young Life Camp this summer. An outstanding student athlete, Kelly plays lacrosse for the Dover High School Senators. The Methodist men also support Young Life. Ellen Gumpman, mother of Corrine Gumpman sent a nice thank you note to the Methodist Men for their help in sending Corrine to Camp Pecometh this summer. The men gave out 10 camperships to younger members of our church family and were happy to be part of this ministry. The Whatcoat United Methodist men will resume meeting in September and all men are welcome to attend their monthly breakfasts. 3

Missions and Outreach Committee The Committee has been quiet for a couple of months. Our busy time is fast approaching, so please pick and choose which mission you would like to support. On August 25, we will be collecting money for the Conference Native American Missions. Shoes 2 Share will be the month of September. We will be collecting your gently used shoes and also shoes not so gently used or maybe just one shoe. This one collection supports 2 different missions. The not so gently used shoes go directly to Africa. We have been and will continue to collect items for Operation Christmas Child for final collection in November. A big Thank You to those who helped make items for the Christmas Child boxes on July 31, with a special Thanks to Vicki Thompson, Alyssa Yengo, and LaWanda Magill for coming up with ideas for the boxes. This year we will not be doing Angel Tree, but something a little different. We will be supporting foster children in our area with Christmas gifts. We are gathering information on this right now and will have more information for you in the coming months. Also, September is our mission trip to Sun Valley Indian School in Arizona. There are 6 people from our congregation on this trip - Stephen Burnett, Devon Coventry, Rita Knight, Ronnie Davis, Donna Todd, and myself. Please keep us in your prayers. Blessings, Nancy Caswell Family Life- Young Heart Hello! It has been sometime since we have had a Young At Heart outing. As a refresher about this program, it was started in the church kitchen in 1995 as a way to promote social activities for our congregation. The purpose is to promote fellowship among our congregation regardless of age. While we have not had an outing for a few months, we hope to try again to provide activities for you. We pray that we will have your suggestions and participation. We will be going to the Old Town Buffet located in Rodney Village Shopping Center on South Governors Ave. They serve American, Japanese and Chinese food. In the past we have gone there many times and enjoyed a variety of dishes at a reasonable price. We will be gathering for fellowship and dinner on August 23, 2013 at 5:30p.m. Please inform Margaret Butterworth at or Florence Masten at by August 19 th for reservations or information. May God bless each of you! 4

Boys and Their Grills I think everyone has been in a situation where they have experienced an embarrassing moment in their life. These can take on many forms and my wife claims I have more than my share of them. They can also seem to take on a ' life of their own 'when they are retold by friends and family. So in order to head of what my wife is having a field day with I have decided to air my dirty laundry and set the record straight. Really I just want to steal her joy she is having way too much fun with this story. Last week we went boating. We are not allowed to barbeque at the dock because apparently it is a fire hazard. It seems the marina operator thinks I may set fire to a sailboat or something like that. We can however leave the dock and grille at a safe distance, so we did. At least that was the plan. I have a grille that came with the boat that attaches to the swim platform on the back and swings out over the water, so I don't set fire to the boat. I set it all up, loaded it with charcoal and had my mouth set for steak. I placed a small piece of paper in the grille as a wick and pushed the grille out from the boat. Sounds simple doesn't it? Well as I reached to light the grille I hadn't secured it to the boat quite right and as I clicked the lighter the whole grille fell off the boat into the water never to be seen again! Imagine my shock which soon turned to a paralyzing fear that there could be witnesses! My wife came out of the cabin and said "Here are the steaks, Honey, what was that splash?" I didn't answer still with an outstretched arm pointing a lighter like a smoking gun. I asked her "Are there any boats near us?" She looked around still holding the steaks and said, No, what was the splash? I wanted to tell her a whale (like Jonah?) took the grille but admitted it just fell of the boat followed up by an admission I maybe hadn't installed it right. Well shock soon turned to laughter which soon turned to pain when we couldn't grille those delicious steaks. In this case, my embarrassing moment turned into peals of laughter from those who heard the story. They start out sympathetic but soon see it for what it really is and that is just plain funny! Sometimes that paralyzing fear of being seen and judged stops us from doing what GOD calls us to do. How many times do we run from the concept of laughing at ourselves because we don't want to be judged? How many times do we have something to say but don't because we are afraid of the judgment or criticism that may come with it? No one wants to intentionally mess up so we do nothing. We don't speak in church or become lay speakers because we are too self-conscious. We don't reach out to a person who is in need because we may not do it right. We don't pray before we eat at a fast food restaurant because we don't feel comfortable being the only ones doing it. I am pretty sure I am the only one who lost their barbeque grill that day. I am glad I can laugh about it and glad I can share it with you all. I hope my first reaction the next time something dumb happens to me and my wife assures me it will, that I don t fret about who saw it. I hope the next time GOD calls me to stand out from the crowd I do it with the ability that HE gives me even if people laugh or judge. Hopefully, by laughing with me it helps you do the same. Thanks and may GOD continue to bless you all. Camp Pecometh Youth Leadership Camp This is the 2nd year that Camp Pecometh has sponsored a Youth Leadership Camp. Megan Webb and Gannon Childers were the youth from Whatcoat who attended. They were selected by the Pastor and Trustees for their leadership qualities. They shared their experiences with both services on July 21st. 5

Yesteryear V By Pat Dyer A second effort to record the information on the tombstones in our cemetery on Main Street, was done in 1984 when Raymond Dill, a noted historian, collector of Delaware books, postcards and ephemera, sought to record the information on all of the tombstones in Kent County. Raymond was so dedicated to the task that he used a probe to try to locate tombstones that had fallen and had been covered by dirt. It was at this time that my son, Mark Dyer, took on the task of cleaning up the cemetery as his Eagle Scout project. There were vines, brush and fallen trees all over the place. At least one of the trees was about four feet in diameter and had to be removed with all of the other rubble. I believe there were other attempts to clean up the cemetery. One may have been undertaken around in connection with the bicentennial of our nation. Mr. Dill did the best job possible considering the condition of the cemetery. Fallen trees had knocked over some tombstones and some were covered over with dirt caused by neglect of the cemetery. Mr. Dill recorded all of the information he found on the tombstones and later recorded this information in a 2-volume book called Souls in Heaven, Names in Stone, published in Actually the book was published by his brother, as Raymond died in 1985 shortly before surveying a cemetery in Milford. Raymond was so involved with Delaware history and cemeteries that when he died, he had his tombstone, which is located in Oddfellows Cemetery, carved in the shape of the State of Delaware. Mr. Dill recorded 86 burials in our cemetery, which included eight from the Tatnall records as he could not find those eight stones. A number of stones were piled up on the ground and some were leaning against trees. We have no idea where these stones belong. It is also possible that some stones have been removed from the cemetery. Operation Christmas Child Christmas in July July 31, 2013 Many hands gathered armed w/sewing machines, craft items, glue, scissors, tec. To make gifts of love to place in Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes. Glory to God for all that was accomplished in His name to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ! 6 Pictured left to right: Kathe Wagner, OCC Central Delmar Area Coordinator; Judi,; Pat Berlen, OCC Church Coordinator.
