Our Savior Lutheran hurch astor Karl Gibbs 209 West Jones Street, Milford, IL hone: ell: March 3, 2019 WELOME VISITORS! We are happy that you have chosen to worship with us this morning. lease sign one of the visitors registration cards found on the back of the pew and place it in the offering plate. AS WE GATHER The Day of the Transfiguration of our Lord serves as a transition time from the general ministry of Jesus to the very focused latter part of His life on earth and to the one-way journey to Jerusalem that brings Him to the cross. There is a sense of urgency at the time of the Transfiguration---something initially missed by eter the disciple, who wanted to set up tents on the high mountain for Jesus, Moses, and Elijah. In dramatic fashion, Jesus reminded His disciples that staying in the glory on the mountain was not an option. The fulfillment of hrist's mission was down on the plain, among the people for whom He had come to sacrifice Himself. Although there is a sense of glory in worship on Transfiguration Sunday, it is not an end in itself; it is preparation for continuing the journey into the shadows of Lent. In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. The Scripture and Holy Gospel The Lord s rayer Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. The Address to Guardians and Godparents The Renunciation of Sin and rofession of Faith Do you renounce the devil and all his works and all his ways? I do renounce them. Do you believe in God, the Father Almighty? Yes, I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus hrist, His only Son? Yes, I believe in Jesus hrist, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under ontius ilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in the Holy Spirit? Yes, I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy hristian hurch, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life T everlasting. The Baptism
The Gift of the andle The candle given to Sophia as a visible reminder that hristians are to be the light of the world. Even young hristians are reminded that they are to grow up to let their light shine before men that they may glorify our Father in heaven The Gift of Luther s Small atechism The rayer The Welcome The Small atechism, authored by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther, is given as an aid to Josh & Gretchen as they instruct Sophia in the hristian faith, preparing her for a life of service in the hurch and in the world. We welcome you into the Lord s family. We receive you as a fellow member of the Body of hrist, a child of the same heavenly Father, and an heir with us of the Kingdom of God. T onfession and Absolution T If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:8-9 Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination. Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus hrist, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of hrist, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. John 20:19-23 Salutation and ollect of the Day The Lord be with you. And also with you. T Service of the Word T Let us pray. O God, in the glorious transfiguration of Your beloved Son You confirmed the mysteries of the faith by the testimony of Moses and Elijah. In the voice that came from the bright cloud You wonderfully foreshowed our adoption by grace. Mercifully make us co-heirs with the King in His glory and bring us to the fullness of our inheritance in heaven; through the same Jesus hrist, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Sit Old Testament Reading Deuteronomy 34:1 12 Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of isgah, which is opposite Jericho. And the LORD showed him all the land, Gilead as far as Dan, all Naphtali, the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the western sea, the Negeb, and the lain, that is, the Valley of Jericho the city of palm trees, as far as Zoar. And the LORD said to him, This is the land of which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, I will give it to your offspring. I have let you see it with your eyes, but you shall not go over there. So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the LORD, and he buried him in the valley in the land of Moab opposite Beth-peor; but no one knows the place of his burial to this day. Moses was 120 years old when he died. His eye was undimmed, and his vigor unabated. And the people of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days. Then the days of weeping and mourning for Moses were ended. And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him. So the people of Israel obeyed him and did as the LORD had commanded Moses. And there has not arisen a prophet since in Israel like Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face, none like him for all the signs and the wonders that the LORD sent him to do in the land of Egypt, to haraoh and to all his servants and to all his land, and for all the mighty power and all the great deeds of terror that Moses did in the sight of all Israel. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Epistle Hebrews 3:1 6 Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God s house. For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself. (For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.) Now Moses was faithful in all God s house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, but hrist is faithful over God s house as a son. And we are his house if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Stand Alleluia and Verse John 6:68 Holy Gospel Luke 9:28 36 The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the ninth chapter. Glory to You, O Lord. Now about eight days after these sayings [Jesus] took with him eter and John and James and went up on the mountain to pray. And as he was praying, the appearance of his face was altered, and his clothing became dazzling white. And behold, two men were talking with him, Moses and Elijah, who appeared in glory and spoke
of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. Now eter and those who were with him were heavy with sleep, but when they became fully awake they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. And as the men were parting from him, eter said to Jesus, Master, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah not knowing what he said. As he was saying these things, a cloud came and overshadowed them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my Son, my hosen One; listen to him! And when the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and told no one in those days anything of what they had seen. This is the Gospel of the Lord. raise to You, O hrist. Learn By Heart And God spoke all these words, saying, I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me. 6 It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus hrist, our Lord, who at His transfiguration revealed His glory to His disciples that they might be strengthened to proclaim His cross and resurrection and with all the faithful look forward to the glory of life everlasting. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying: Sanctus Isaiah 6:3; Matthew 21:9 rayer of Thanksgiving Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior. With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross. Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. The Words of Our Lord Matthew 26:26 28; Mark 14:22 24; Luke 22:19 20; 1 orinthians 11:23 25 Our Lord Jesus hrist, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: Take, eat; this is My T body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me. In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My T blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me. ax Domini John 20:19 The peace of the Lord be with you always. Agnus Dei John 1:29

"The Book of Exodus" Lenten Series Over the past several weeks, our Sunday School and Adult Bible lasses have been studying the second book of the Bible -- Exodus. During the season of Lent, we're going to continue our in-depth look at this Gospel-filled book in our Wednesday evening Services of Evening rayer. Starting on Wednesday, March 6, join us each Wednesday evening of Lent at 7:00 pm, as we witness anew how God reveals Himself to us through His absence and His presence, through His silence and His speech, through His wrath and His mercy, and through His judgment and His amazing grace. In doing so, we will see how this portion of God's Word paints for us a beautiful portrait of Jesus. Ash Wednesday Worship The penitential season of Lent is upon us. This somber season is a season of repentance, taking the 40 days prior to Easter to recognize our complete depravity before God and our need for a Savior. This season begins with the observance of Ash Wednesday, a day in which we have dust and ashes imposed on our foreheads, reminding us that because of our sin we
shall die and return to the dust from which we were created. However, those ashes are imposed upon us in the form of a cross, reminding us that as those redeemed by hrist's sacrifice on the cross, death will not be our end, but that we shall rise from the dead to live with Him in heaven forever. Join us this Wednesday for our Ash Wednesday Service. A fellowship soup supper will be served at 5:45 pm. The Imposition of Ashes will begin at 6:45 pm. Finally, the Divine Service will begin at 7:00 pm. Spring Forward Be sure to set your clocks forward one hour as Daylight Saving Time begins on Sunday, March 10. 10 Lutherans for Life Quote The next time you are burdened with guilt and wondering if God can really forgive you again, look to the cross of Jesus. There He proved His love by giving up His life to pay for your sin. Witness the supreme proof of your forgiveness, which God provided in the resurrection. There He removes all doubts about who He is and what He did for us. We have absolute certainty that we are forgiven and bound for heaven because of Jesus. It s the truth! Rev. Jonathan M.
