1 CROSSLINES SOCKS, SOCKS and more socks all ready to go to the Desert Southwest Annual Conference s effort to clothe the needy with new and comfortable socks. Displaying Mountain View United Methodist Church's donations are Fran Estes and Donnie Hansen. There was a competition between men, women and youth to see who could donate the most socks, but winners were not available at press time. Central West District socks will benefit the needy using the Haven UMC Clothing Bank at Jerome, Justa Center at Phoenix and the Crossroads Mission at Yuma. This year s annual conference was conducted June at Glendale. Mountain View delegates were Terry and Willie Schick, as well as Mountain View Senior Pastor Jeremy Embry. UMCOR gives response to Nebraska Tornadoes The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) has responded to a request for an emergency grant to assist survivors of the June 16 severe tornado outbreak in Nebraska. By contributing to the One Great Hour of Sharing offering, the people of Mountain View United Methodist church assures that 100 per cent of any gifts donated to UMCOR will go towards the agency s efforts to support the work of local United Methodist conferences when disaster strikes anywhere in the United States. The Nebraska grant will be directed toward survivors in the town of Pilger, where 75 per cent of the town and 100 per cent of its business district were destroyed by twin tornados. The Great Plains conference has responded with early response teams for immediate needs. Mountain View United Methodist has an active Safe Sanctuary policy to provide a secure environment for the children and youth of the community Pastor Jeremy s Message Honoring our freedom As we approach our 238 th Independence Day, I want to ask you to take some time apart and do something special. Although it s certainly the norm; I m not talking about taking the day off, going on vacation, or hosting a barbecue. I m asking that you consider making the 4 th of July a day of prayer. Never before in our history has America been so divided. Never before have we faced the level of threats that we face today whether they are domestic threats or international threats. The American way of life is changing in some ways for the better, and in some ways for the worst. As Christians, we have a responsibility to pray. We should pray for those whom we have elected into public office. We should pray for the men and women around the world who are fighting to keep us free. We should pray for one another. If we want to see our nation change, we should start by praying for it. In 2 Chronicles 7:14 we re told that, If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land. I pray for that day of restoration, when we will stand hand-in -hand as one nation, under God. I pray for healing over our land with so many things that divide us, may God be the one thing that we can unite upon. I pray for peace throughout the world. I pray for wisdom and discernment for our leaders. I pray for protection for our armed forces. Most of all, I pray that God will continue to bless the United States of America. I hope you will consider joining me in prayer this 4 th of July. Remember that freedom isn t free. Let s honor our freedom by praying for our nation. Have a happy and safe 4 th of July! Become tuned in to Mountain View s Vision of Living God s Word Led by the Spirit Loving all in Christ s Name

3 Peace with Justice Sunday Offering set for July 6 The people of Mountain View United Methodist Church will be given the opportunity to share in the church-wide Peace with Justice Sunday special offering at July 6 morning worship services. The congregation s Communion offering will go to support Peace with Justice one of the six special offerings given throughout the year by United Methodists. Proceeds from the offering help provide a voice for members of the United Methodist church to advocate for peace in the Desert Southwest Conference s communities as well as around the world. Half of the contributions are reserved for ministries within the conference; the other half supports peace with justice advocacy nationally and internationally. For example, a Peace with Justice grant from the General Board of Church and Society is helping change the culture of conflict and gang violence in the Greater Hilltop Shalom Zone in Columbus, Ohio. Another national project supports the West Virginia Council of Churches, which condemns mountaintop removal mining for what it does to the environment and raises support for families of miners who have died in accidents. Among other Special Sunday world-wide offerings are Human Relations Day, One Great Hour of Sharing, Native American Ministries Sunday, United Methodist Student Day and World Communion Sunday. Ritcheys to be Colorado-bound For 50th anniversary celebra on July 11 will be a big day for Richard and Arlene Ritchey when they go to Carbondale, CO. They will meet there to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with relatives, friends and former associates. The couple, who moved to the Verde Valley about 14 years ago, are members of Mountain View United Methodist Church. Before his retirement, Richard was chief of police at Aspen, CO. Terry Schick (right) of Mountain View lends a hand to one of several persons for whom the church made possible for them to have clean, comfortable clothing to wear. Prayers needed and homebound? Just give a call to Eunice Perschke Just call me and we will offer prayers for you, says Eunice Perschke, who leads intercessory prayer at 9 a.m. the second and fourth Mondays of the month at Mountain View United Methodist. She and Jean Stattner are prayer coordinators for the church. Eunice can be reached at Also, she said, if you are going in for surgery, come to our prayer sessions in the sanctuary and we will lay hands on you and pray for you. She also said persons desiring in-the-home Holy Communion on the first Monday of the month can call her or the Church Office, to make arrangements. She asked people to give notice of their need for Communion a week in advance so a time can be arranged, and driving directions can be obtained.

5 Wellness notes... Men s health really A family issue July is a good month to think about Men s Health issues. When David was building the Temple, and we need to consider our body surely God s Temple, he told his son, Be strong and brave. Get to work. Don t be afraid. Don t lose hope. The Lord God is my God. He is is with you. He won t fail you. I Chronicles 28:20 Are not these directives exactly what men, and the men in our life, need to heed? Dr. Ken Goldberg in a WebMD article asks men --- Do you put as much care into your personal health as you do into the maintenance of your car? Instead of recommending specific tests and prevention, he suggests men drop the bulletproof attitude, and get involved in health screenings, and realize that diseases can happen to anybody. Men need to know where to go for help, and work to promote community and national issues that contribute to their health. Be alert to media information, good websites, occupational health services, and LIS- TEN to others, and benefit from their experiences. Mind-Body-and Spirit Wellness involves not only Knowing Your Numbers (Blood Pressure, Cholesterol, PSA, Weight, Oxygen Saturation, Blood Glucose), having annual Physical Exams and screenings, and being mindful of nutrition, exercise, stress and anger management ---but in realizing risk factors (family history & activity related risks), and willingly educating yourself and your sons about wellness issues. Breast Cancer, Osteoporosis, Eating Disorders, & Sexual dysfunction are not just women s disorders. Encouraging sons and grandsons to check regularly for Testicular Cancer, is so important. Not being embarrassed to talk about depression, sexual health, relationships, and spirituality can be a lifesaving and positive role model for your family and friends. A wellness goal is to have a heightened awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys. Men s health is a family issue it impacts the whole. Listen, get involved, act, and educate yourself on men s health issues. Alice Stephenson, BSN, RN Parish Nurse Plans being made to start Book discussion group Interested in being part of a book discussion group? If so, then plan on attending such a gathering the third Monday of September at Mountain View United Methodist s Fellowship Center. Peggy Blair, librarian for the church s United Methodist Women, said the group will meet at 10:30 a.m. to discuss any or all of the following titles: Prayers for Strangers, by River Jordan; Heaven is for Real, by Todd Burpo, and The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, by Rebecca Skilott. Regarding Skilott s book, Peggy said: What an informative book. This is a first time author who carefully researched the life of an impoverished black lady from the 1940s and 1950s. Henrietta s life, her treatment for cancer and her legacy are detailed in this best seller. Relegated to only a in most books, Henrietta Lacks' cells changed medicine and changed science. Her story is difficult and quite remarkable. Coffee sales limited in July, August There will be no Café Justo coffee sales during July and August except to regular monthly purchasers or by an order request made Henry Mellon at Normal sales are expected to resume in September.

7 Vacation Bible School prepares For July 21 start at Mountain View Welcome to Jungle Safari! Get ready children and adults for a life-changing adventure taking place right here at Mountain View United Methodist church. Each day from July begins at Toucan Jam in the Fellowship Center, where kids will sing, shout, praise, pray and be introduced to a Bible story and the daily theme. Then after children and youth experience the other activities of the day they will gather back at Toucan Jam to be encouraged to count on God and to be motivated to serve others. Sally Reese, who is the church s children s director and head of VBS, said sessions will start with a cookout from 5 to 6 p.m., with activities from 6 to 8 p.m. Other sites at Jungle Safari include: Zip Line Bible Time, where kids will explore the Bible story in a variety of interactive ways. Jaguar Junction, where kids will have time to move around, have fun and fill up on snacks. Lizard Leap, where kids sing to a jungle beat and have fun creating musical crafts. Slug-A-Bug S.W.A.M.P., where kids are encouraged to serve with a mighty purpose. All these fun activities, said Sally, connect to the Bible Story, Bible memory, and the nature of God! For adults, Bob Reese will lead nightly Bible studies on God as creator, God as provider, God as protector, God as Savior and God as king. Bobby Lopez, Mountain View s youth director, will lead programs for teenagers, with Sally in charge of pre-school through fifth graders. We have several folks who have stepped up to help with this exciting Vacation Bible School, said Sally, but we can use more adventurous explorers to join us in serving and having fun. Volunteers are urged to contact her at Tasks before the school s start include planning and organizing, making telephone calls, preparing craft materials, distributing publicity materials, creating the VBS environment and preparing the lesson sites. Volunteers can elect to serve in various age groups during Jungle Safari. There is a host of activities in which they can help, such as teaching, being a site or crew leader, helping with registration, missions, music, games, snacks and assisting in the classroom. CROSSLINES-7 Mountain View s Baby Bottles net House of Ruth a large benefit During May many of those attending Mountain View s morning worship services took home baby bottles. These were bottles to be filled with coins, currency and even checks to benefit the work of the House of Ruth located at 12th Street and Mingus Avenue in Cottonwood. House of Ruth, said United Methodist Women s president Stephanie Kreunen, does a wonderful job of caring for mothers and fathers with babies. They are a crisis pregnancy center providing a much needed service to those individuals, showing the love modeled by Christ as they teach, counsel and help those needing this assistance. Your fine efforts, she continued, raised $1, to further the work of the House of Ruth. They said they could not stay open to greet, serve and show the love of Christ without wonderful people like you. Well done, people of Mountain View! Angels A c con nues cra ing work Mountain View s crafting group Angels Attic continues to make progress toward a terrific sale in October where shoppers will find good bargains for their Christmas shopping as proceeds help provide funds for the church. Angels Attic s will meet July 14 and 28 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. with snacks and lunch provided. Those with concerns may contact Stephanie Kreunen, or at Stephanie.kreunen@gmail.com.
