1 Volume 5, Number 39 Catch the Spirit September 26, 2012 We live in a lost and hurting world. I have heard this phrase many times but as I have reflected on it lately I think of: the violence around our world, millions who suffer daily with hunger and thirst, the horrors of human trafficking, and the polarization of our politics. These things break my heart and I believe they break the heart of God. The decline in the morality of our country and world seems to permeate many of our woes. My observations suggest to me that we have had serious shifts in our moral compass over the past several decades. Yes, many of us who are older long for the good old days while younger folks just grin and indulge us. No doubt we have always had violence, hunger, distortions, and perversity in our world. However, the degree to which these things are apparent in our culture today seems to be exponentially greater than it was just a few generations ago. Why are things worse now than they used to be? There are many reasons, but I want to lift up three. First, we have let them become worse by being too tolerant. The Bible teaches us to turn the other cheek (Matthew 5:39), but I don t believe it asks us to shut our eyes and walk away when we see or hear something that challenges the teaching in the Word of God. Essentially Matthew 5:39 is telling us not to retaliate, but it doesn t mean we should not defend ourselves when we (or our God) are under attack. The second reason I want to lift up is that we have seen our passion wane for the cause of Christ. I am a through and through Razorback fan and as most of us could agree the last few weeks have not been highlight reel material. I have to confess that I left Razorback stadium after the losses to both Alabama and Rutgers highly frustrated and angry. Can some of you relate? There is nothing inherently wrong with that except that I think many of us may be more passionate about the Hogs than we ever are about defending and sharing our faith and holding to Biblical moral standards in our world. We are called to defend and suffer for our faith. (II Timothy 3:12). Finally, we have been worn down gradually. I think the media, through television, movies, and games, and enhanced use of the Internet has led to pollution of our minds to levels that we don t even realize and has de-sensitized us to things that years ago would repulse us. So what can we do? Well, we can either continue on our course of decline or we can stop compromising ourselves and do what Jesus asks us to do in Luke 9:23 Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. Becoming a fully devoted follower of Christ is the better path. However, it comes at a price as measured by the world s standards but the eternal rewards are well worth it. Blessings, Brian Swain Administrator

With a population that is home to 1 of every 6 people on earth and is less than 6% Christian, this is an opportunity to serve among the lost and the least. Come hear more about the upcoming trip on Thursday, October 4th, from 7:00-8:00 p.m. in Wesley 310. For more information, contact Clint Elcan at or clintelcan@gmail.com.

4 Family Worship Central encourages families to worship together. Elementary age children are ready to begin learning the rhythm of worship from the historic creeds, prayers, and hymns to the contemporary praise songs. The privilege and responsibility of helping your child learn to truly worship their Creator may seem overwhelming. Not to worry! The Children s Ministries staff has made available a great book called Parenting in the Pew. This humorous, insightful, and Christ-centered book will provide you with the motivation and encouragement needed to help you engage your children in the very thing we all were created to do worship God. Copies of the book along with further information are available by contacting Susan Williams, Director of Children s Ministries, at Infant Baptism Travis and Leigh Bowen will present their infant son, Barrett David Bowen, in Christian Baptism at the 11:00 a.m. worship service in Central s Activities Center this Sunday, September 30, Hospitalizations WRMC - Paul Hewitt, Dottie Wood, Steve Wood Previously Hospitalized and Released - Connell Brown, Susie Colwell, Dan Nichols, Truman Yancey Note Due to privacy laws, our pastors are unable to access hospital admission records as they have in the past.
