2 Welcome Snowbirds & Seagulls! Snowbirds & Seagulls ministry is a weekly program that continues through the end of March. This ministry is geared for the local and snowbird seniors. The weekly programs are held on Thursday mornings, and weekly golf outings take place on Tuesday mornings. Naval Academy Glee Club Thursday, March 15, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church. The internationally-acclaimed U.S. Naval Academy Glee Club will appear in concert on Thursday, March 15, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Myrtle Beach. Tickets will be available at the door (starting at 5pm) and will be $20 per person. The acclaimed 100 member ensemble will present an evening of fine music, to include patriotic selections, music from Broadway, choir classics and the program will feature a performance of Durufle's REQUIEM, accompanied by Naval Academy Chapel organist, Monte Maxwell. The Good Samaritan Fund is in need of monetary funds. The fund is low due to the recent cold weather and holidays. Thank you for your generosity and warm hearts! 6 NEWS FROM UNITED METHODIST WOMEN United Methodist Women have been busy the past couple of months. Our 6 circles have raised money selling RADA cutlery, pecans, and poinsettias and have used the proceeds to donated to Shop with a Cop, New Directions, Sea Haven(youth shelter), Reach Out & Read and homeless students program. They have assembled Christmas shoeboxes for Help for Kids, provided Christmas gifts for a needy family and 3 homeless teens, and sponsored 2 children in the Shepherd's Child program. Paper products were collected for New Directions and "thinking of you" cards are sent to shut-ins at FUMC. Candy treat bags were assembled for residents of Magnolia Assisted Living and residents received visits and the gift of Christmas caroling. Twelve bibles were also donated to our FUMC youth program. Money left in the UMW treasury has been disbursed to Reach Out & Read, New Directions, Wallace Family Life Center for Operation Christmas Child and SOS Healthcare Autism for the Oak Tree Farm (independent residence project). Ideas are already starting to flow for the coming months; Easter baskets, Blessing bags, a Rural Mission project... MISSION HIGHLIGHT Rural Mission Inc was chartered in 1969 as an interdenominational, non-profit organization to foster, promote and administer to the spiritual, educational, medical and housing requirements of the rural people of the Sea Islands of coastal South Carolina. Volunteers, leaders, donors and neighbors work to repair homes, provide crisis assistance and intervention, support students who need funds for books, clothing, and/or transportation, assist with job placements, housing referrals, negotiations with government agencies, even helping to get firewood to those who need it. Rural mission has fostered a health clinic and the John's Island Rural Housing Project. They look for work volunteers year round as well as donations. Wallace Family Life Center is a family oriented facility. Their mission is to provide educational, cultural, recreational and religious programs to enrich the lives of the people that live in the Wallace/Bennettsville communities of South Carolina. It began as a project of United Methodist Women in They provide adult education, an after- school program tutoring and providing enrichments, a summer reading program, a youth council for youth to help them become more active citizens in the community, vacation bible school, scouting (boys & girls), food pantry, clothes closet and Operation Christmas Child. The United Methodist Women general meeting is February 6, 2018 at 11:00 AM in the Wesley Fellowship Hall. The new director of Wallace Family Life, Kevin Long, will be the speaker. This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the center and to ask questions. All are invited. A soup and sandwich lunch will follow. A Legislative Advocacy Day is being held Feb 20, 2018 at Epworth Children's Home in Columbia. Topics include Public Education Issues, How Poverty Affects Children, Mass Incarceration & Criminal Justice and Domestic Violence Prevention. There is a registration fee of $20.00 which includes materials and lunch (before Feb 12). If interested, please let Barb Brooks or Jane Hodges know.
