NEWSLETTER DEADLINE The deadline for the September 2018 Newsletter is Wednesday, August 15 th, at 10:00 a.m. newsletter@stpaulscary.org. Rector s Letter Dear Friends, Welcoming in Christ- The Anniversary Campaign As we celebrate our 60 th Anniversary as a parish this year, and anticipate the Anniversary Campaign in the fall, the month of June is a time to celebrate the leadership of St. Paul s, particularly our clergy and staff. Throughout its history this parish community has been blessed with outstanding, committed, and faith-filled leaders. This month s Welcoming in Christ devotional says it so well. Pentecost launched the ideal church with inspired leadership, excitement, joy, faithfulness, and growth. But we know how difficult it is to sustain the perfect community. And as the Christian movement expands, the church encounters lots of issues and requires the passionate faith, tireless leadership, organizational skills, and common sense of St. Paul the Apostle. Church leadership, ordained and lay, involves women and men whose gifts and qualities Paul lists as the fruits of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. With St. Paul being our namesake, may he be a model for us and a reminder that no one of us possesses all the gifts needed for ministry, but together we do. And together we can do incredible things. I d like to invite you during the next month to think of a staff or clergy person of St. Paul s who has touched your life in some way over the years and thank them. Whether a note, , or personal words of thanks, let us offer thanks for those who have served this parish community. We are truly blessed Summertime Many perceive that summertime is a time when parish life slows down a bit. It is true, programmatically, that some activities slow down a bit in the summer. But I d like to point out that others kick in like Vacation Bible School, St. Paul s Preschool Camp, Appalachian Service Project, to name a few, along with so many others of our outreach ministries. But there are other parts of parish life that continue as always like pastoral care, worship, and the administrative care of our congregation. Please keep in mind that while you may travel and be out of town these next couple months the work of the parish continues. Staff continue to be paid, bills need to be paid, outreach continues, and I hope your generosity of giving will continue through the summer as well. George

2 Clergy Page 2 God in Three Persons: The Joy of Community Jesus came to reveal to humanity that God is not a solitary, eternal being, contemplating [God s] own glory; [God] is not just an extraordinary Creator of a beautiful yet painful universe. God is a family of three; three persons in communion one with another, giving themselves totally one to another, each one relative to the other. And God created man and woman as a sign of the Trinity; [God] created them to be in communion, one with the other, in this way reflecting his Love. God yearns for community to be a sign of this communion between Father, Son and Holy Spirit: That they may be one as the Father and I are one. (John 17:11) Jean Vanier, Community and Growth (1979) Years ago, I spent some time at L Arche Daybreak, a community just outside Toronto. L Arche is a network of organizations where people with disabilities live in community with those who care for them. The first organization of its kind was founded by Jean Vanier, a Catholic philosopher and theologian, in the 1960s. In his early adulthood, Vanier served in the Royal Canadian Navy and eventually earned a Ph.D. in philosophy from the Institut Catholique de Paris. It was there, however, that his life took an unexpected turn: through his friendship with a priest, Fr. Thomas Philippe, Vanier became aware of the harsh, isolating conditions of the institutions in France where people with developmental and intellectual disabilities lived. In 1964, Vanier invited two men, Raphael Simmi and Philippe Seux, to leave institutional life behind so that they could live at home with him instead. So began a movement that has spread to over 150 communities throughout the world. L Arche communities are far from perfect, but their witness is a testament to the unexplored potential for meaningful relationship across difference. As I look toward Trinity Sunday, I can t help but think of L Arche as a symbol for a God whose very existence is communion and a model for the kind of community we are called to embody. Living alongside people who are different than us takes work, yet there is great joy to be found in nurturing just that sort of life with boldness and gratitude. When talking about the Trinity, the church fathers occasionally referred to God as a divine dance. Wherever you find yourself in your walk with God, I hope that you ll take some time to listen for where God is calling you to join in the dance and learn a few new steps. It may be messy and risky, but I guarantee you that it will be well worth your time. Christ s Peace, Javier+ Vestry Warden s Corner Does anybody feel like me it seems that change around us has been massive this year. On a global scale we have had fallout of changes in governments in the US, France, and Germany against the odds. In the UK, Brexit altered the status quo, massively. Leaving the European Union seemed an impossible event and yet the changes that that country is going through, are mind-numbingly complex and irreversible. The thing about change on this scale in a democracy is that some people embrace it, others endure it, and some go to extraordinary lengths to stop it happening at all cost. People just view change differently and trying to get consensus in any group or community is (Continued on page 3)

3 Vestry Warden s Corner Page 3 (Continued from page 2) fraught with difficulty. And yet change is not a new phenomenon. Here are some inspired quotes from past leaders: John F. Kennedy ( ), thirty-fifth President of the USA: Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future. Charles Darwin ( ), English naturalist : It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change. Mahatma Gandhi ( ), a preeminent leader of Indian nationalism: You must be the change you wish to see in the world. Winston Churchill ( ), British politician: To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often. Benjamin Franklin ( ), American statesman, scientist, and philosopher: When you're finished changing, you're finished. We, as humans, are by nature, brilliant change detectors we readily notice when things are different. Ironically, by that same nature, we are tremendously averse to change! In most situations our preference is the familiar over the change. Oftentimes, we are even antagonistic to change and need encouragement to work through that change. If we now examine our own lives, there will probably be the same ratios of pro, neutral, and against in any family, church, organization, or community. This is probably a positive, as it stimulates debate, allows everyone who chooses, to have a voice and often mollifies the change model finally adopted, to allow more openness, sharing, and fairness in the process. Have you noticed the wall art in the narthex that says, Love God, Love your neighbor, Change the World? We all come to St. Paul s because we love God and because we strive to love each other What can we do and what are we doing to change the world? We have a vibrant community of godly people; we have over 60 ministries that address areas of need. As we embark on the summer schedule, there will be many changes: changed service schedules, sultry weather, school holidays, family reunions, summer jobs, internships, new classrooms, and adjustments to name a few. At St. Paul s, we are in the throes of planning our 60 th anniversary celebration in September. Alongside this, as many of you are aware, will also be the launch of our Anniversary Capital Campaign. This campaign, as Father George talked about on Sunday (May 13) will serve the desires of the active and new congregants, create and enhance spaces for worship, fellowship, spiritual formation, and spiritual outreach, whilst ensuring that we are good stewards of our current facilities, and build only what we can afford. I would encourage everyone to study the materials that are on the St. Paul s website at wp-content/uploads/2018/04/capital- Campaign-Summary.pdf I recently attended the funeral of Joe Furno, a longtime member of St. Paul s, and was reminded how grateful I am, for the courage, faith, and work the founders of our parish and people like Joe and Becky did, to move us from the tin building to the chapel to the current worship space. We build on the shoulders of those who have gone before us, so that we can provide our children and their children with the legacy and tradition we so cherish. How can we be the change? I was moved by a recent homily delivered by the Rev, Candy Snively, on a very personal story about a remarkable act of love. She called it A tale of three prayers. sermons/a-tale-of-three-prayers/. During Passion Week this year, we had an awesome experience of having our clergy wearing new blood red (Continued on page 4)

4 Hospitality, Parish Life, and Pastoral Care Page 4 BISHOP S VISIT: JUNE 17 The Right Reverend Anne Elliott Hodges-Copple, VI Bishop Suffragan of North Carolina, will be at St. Paul s on Sunday June 17 th to confirm and receive new members into St. Paul s. The Bishop will preside at both the 9:00 and 11:15 a.m. services that Sunday (also Father s Day.) Come join your fellow parishioners for the celebration and welcome the Bishop to St. Paul s. About Our Church We express our sympathy to Joe Ryan for the death of his wife, Carole Jean Ryan; to Becky Furno for the death of her husband, Joe Furno; to Leah Dail for the death of her uncle, Archie Pearson; and to Elaine Buxton Barry for the death of her husband, Rob Barry. Submitted by Melanie Fairbrother Office Manager All Are Welcome Vestry Warden s Corner (continued) (Continued from page 3) vestments, which consisted of 5 new stoles and 3 new chasubles. Additionally, the hangings on the side of the altar area and on the altar were items designed and constructed by Jan Barbee and Barbara Brickman who are St. Paul's members who are on the Altar guild. A small, but effective change that everyone appreciated because of the passion and the solemnity that it expressed! When a wealthy man, Nicodemus, asked Jesus what he needed to do to enter the kingdom of heaven Jesus said (liberally paraphrased) "you ve got to change" more literally Jesus said "You must be born again." -- Now that's big change! So if change is so constant, so universal, so much a part of creation, and such a key to entering the kingdom of heaven how are we to respond? I would like to recommend that we recognize our 60 th anniversary, the Anniversary Campaign and the upcoming stewardship season in the fall, as a true season of change at St. Paul's, and that we, + Enter this season of change with awe, mystery, and gratitude, + Embrace these change events with joy, love, enthusiasm, and generosity, + Respect the destiny of change with reverence. + Remember that it is only through change that we can experience the full glory that our Creator God desires for us. I will conclude with some words that are dear to me, from the Lebanese poet, Khalil Gibran ( ) "You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give." Prayerfully submitted by Olivia Delahaye Junior Warden

14 Liturgy Page 14 From the Minister of Music We are finishing up another busy program year in music at St. Paul s. Thank you to the many people who regularly share their skills in music and make the program possible. Special thanks to Joann Li, organist, and to Andrea Dreier, music associate, who do an enormous amount of good work here that we could not do without. And thanks to the children who are honing their skills in music. We have made significant progress with the children this year. I look forwarded to welcoming more children into the program, as well as continuing with many that remain in the program. And we are graduating some into the youth section of music ministries, which is also exciting. Though midweek rehearsals stop over the summer, there is whole different set of tasks that I attend to during that time. Summer is a time of planning and preparation for the coming program year for me. Music is selected, obtained, prepared, etc. and music for vacation Bible school is planned and presented. There is time for special projects that help things run more smoothly during the busy season. Much happens always behind the scenes to prepare for what you see and hear from music ministries during the year. We are blessed with many talented volunteers, but we always need more voices in all five vocal choirs. If you or your children are interested in joining any ensemble, please contact Rusty McKinney, Minister of Music (rusty.mckinney@stpaulscary.org or call ). You don t need to wait until fall to call. In fact, the sooner I hear from you the better! I look forward to all that we can do together. Wednesday, August 29, 2018 Music Ministries in the Summer During June, July, and most of August, six of Music Ministries eight ensembles are on hiatus and mid-week rehearsals for St. Paul s Choir are suspended. Special music is offered at both 9:00 and 10:45 a.m. services when soloists or small ensembles are available. On Sundays during the summer, 9 O'clock Choir meets at 8:30 a.m. and St. For the program year, the start-up for all ensembles will be on August 29 and 30 in the usual time slots. Even with musical preparations already Paul s Choir meets at 10:15 a.m. for preservice rehearsals. Summer time is a good time to join either of these two choirs. We need singers each week, but the workload is less demanding than during the program year. It is expected that folks will come and go during the summer for vacations, so come when you can. Music Ministries in the Summer 6:00-6:45 p.m. Epiphany Choir (Children Gr. Once rehearsals begin they continue, for the most part on these days and times each week. Check the Google Calendar for Music Ministries on the church s website for more detail.
