New or expectant parents should contact the parish office to schedule an appointment with the pastor. Infant Baptism is celebrated following a Baptism preparation session. CONFIRMATION FOR TEENS Celebrated every other year in the Easter Season. Candidates for this Sacrament should call the Catechetical Office at ANOINTING & CARE OF THE SICK If you or someone you know is preparing for surgery, received a recent serious medical diagnosis, or is experiencing the burden of years, please call the parish office for Anointing of the Sick. Communion can be brought to anyone who is ill or homebound through our Pastoral Care Ministers. A communal anointing occurs at Mass annually on/or near the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, Feb. 11. MARRIAGE Couples should contact the parish upon their Engagement and usually 6 months prior to the desired date of the Wedding Ceremony.

Note the actions of Abraham as he greeted the Lord in the presence of three men who appeared near his tent. He ran from the entrance of the tent to greet them. He bowed to the ground as he met them. He and Sarah, his wife, hastened to prepare a meal and bring food and water to their guests. In the Gospel story, Jesus friend Mary sat at his feet in order to listen to him speak. How do we welcome and reverence the Lord? What do our actions show? Do we remember the Lord s presence in the Blessed Sacrament? How do we welcome the Lord in the scripture readings? How do we acknowledge his presence in our brothers and sisters, both at Mass and afterwards? Whether we kneel, stand, or sit in the Lord s presence, may our hearts and minds always be attuned to him. 3 CATECHETICAL MINISTRY AND UPCOMING PARISH EVENTS Registration for fall classes has begun. Registration Forms are in the turnstile in the foyer at the McKean Church and on the back table at the Bertram Church. We will begin classes on September 6th, 2016 and continue until April 4th, The faith formation classes that our parish provides your child(ren) will help them learn more about our Catholic faith because of their participation in the weekly sessions. It will help them access their inner spiritual life, and enable them to see why our faith in Jesus is so important to convey it to others, to give witness to their faith. Even though you, the parents, are the first teachers of your children in ways of faith, we want to support you through the religious education classes. These gatherings provide a fun environment and an opportunity for parishioners to meet others, get better acquainted, pray briefly together and share the value of being part of the Saint Anthony community. If you are unable to attend the get-together to which you are invited, you are welcome to attend a get-together that works better for you. We will be collecting donations of backpacks, school supplies or cash donations on August 6th/7th and August 13th/14th to support Amigos de Guadalupe Homework Center in East San Jose. The children attend this before and after school center for homework assistance, literacy, snacks and supervised playtime. Next weekend the list of supplies will be provided and you can start watching for the sales. Our goal is to provide supplies for 100 Kindergarten through 6th grade students. You may bring your gifts, or give us a check and we will be your personal shopper. Checks can be made out to Saint Anthony with Backpack Drive written on the subject line. St. Francis de Sales Saint Mary Magdalene St. Mary Magdalene who s feast day is July 22nd is one of the greatest saints of the Bible and a legendary example of God s mercy and grace. She was a Jewish woman that lived among the Gentiles, living as they did. She has long been regarded as a prostitute and the Gospels agree that she was a sinner. Jesus cast seven demons from her when they met. She is an example of how no person is beyond the saving grace of God. She is the patroness of converts, repentant sinners, sexual temptation, pharmacists, tanners and women. The Fearless Band is looking for a drummer for the 5:30 p.m. Sunday Mass. 5 Reflections from the Pastoral Associate: We often hear of the faith of Abraham in the letters of Saint Paul. In one letter, we also read of another of Abraham s great gifts that of hospitality. Never neglect to welcome strangers, for some who did entertained angels. Abraham and Sarah welcomed the three young men, and received God s promise of a son. The strangers were messengers from God. We often fear the stranger at our door, and it is wise to be cautious. But that should not prevent us from welcoming strangers when we can. Have new neighbors moved in? How can I welcome them into my neighborhood? Do I stick with old friends when I come to Mass on Sunday or do I welcome the stranger as Abraham and Sarah did. If we neglect to welcome others, we may miss the opportunity to gain a new friend! Everyone in our parish is invited to attend the summer Neighborhood Socials. These socials have been a very popular way to get to know that person you always see but have never talked to. Relationships are formed and information shared not only for parish involvement but for other community connections as well. When you receive your invitation, either by mail, or telephone, please give sincere thought about joining others in the parish who want to get to know you..and have some fun. You may discover that you have a lot more in common than you think...and you may find a new best friend! May you all have a blessed week! Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: If you knew the gift of God! You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy; you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen. Pope Francis While you are enjoying your summer holidays, please plan on continuing your stewardship, weekly or monthly contributions to support the parish. Traditionally, there is a dip in donations over the summer months when people are away. However, the church expenses continue. Please consider setting up an online giving account, if you haven t already done so, so that you can continue to donate to the church even when you are not present. Or, consider sending in your contributions before you leave for any length of time. This would assist us greatly. Thank you or your support! Friday Night Socials Back by popular demand, we will again be hosting Friday Night Socials on the last Friday of the month through to September. These are informal BBQ s on the Church Plaza. The schedule will be: 7/29 - Men s Night 8/26 - Ladies Night 9/30 - Open to all This is a chance to visit and get better acquainted with other parishioners and Father, in a small relaxing venue. Bring and BBQ your own main course, drinks, plates and utensils and we will provide the BBQ Grill and 3 side dishes. Admission is $5.00 for adults with children under 12 free. The socials will run from 6 to 8 p.m. Tickets for the July 29th Men s Night will be on sale
