Candidates for this Sacrament should call the Catechetical Office at ANOINTING & CARE OF THE SICK If you or someone you know is preparing for surgery, received a recent serious medical diagnosis, or is experiencing the burden of years, please call the parish office for Anointing of the Sick. Communion can be brought to anyone who is ill or homebound through our Pastoral Care Ministers. A communal anointing occurs at Mass annually on/or near the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, Feb. 11. 3 CATECHETICAL MINISTRY AND UPCOMING PARISH EVENTS Registration for fall classes has begun. Registration Forms are in the turnstile in the foyer at the McKean Church and on the back table at the Bertram Church. We will begin classes on September 6th, 2016 and continue until April 4th, The faith formation classes that our parish provides your child(ren) will help them learn more about our Catholic faith because of their participation in the weekly sessions. It will help them access their inner spiritual life, and enable them to see why our faith in Jesus is so important to convey it to others, to give witness to their faith. Even though you, the parents, are the first teachers of your children in ways of faith, we want to support you through the religious education classes. The Germanic influence was strong in those days, reflected in a series of questions posed to the candidate about his intentions. The priest s role in the celebration of Mass had by then come to the fore, as the ritual notes that Mass vestments must be worn, the hands of the priest must be anointed with chrism, and a chalice with wine and water and a paten with a host must be given. Up to then, the ordination rite had stressed the presbyter as a collaborator with the bishop and a member of the order of presbyters. Then, in a not-so-subtle shift, the presbyter came to be seen as a priest designated to celebrate the Mass and, as the prayer suggests, to touch the chalice. By these days, remember, the cup had long vanished from Communion for the laity. A thousand years ago, today s patterns were already in place. The priest no longer saw himself as a member of a council of elders, a presbytery, and in some dioceses he had little influence over the bishop. Instead, he was either a pastor, with relationship to the eucharistic community in the parish, or he was a priest monk, offering Mass for the salvation of the departed or the intentions of the living. Four detentions in two weeks are too many. Still Matt wouldn t tell. It was only after Miss Collins went on a morning neighborhood patrol that she found out the real reason for Matt s tardiness. Thump, thump, thump, came the wheelchair down the stairs. It was Matt, steadying Shawnetta as he helped lower her down the stairs and then push her to the corner bus stop. She s a girl in my parish youth group, Matt explained to Miss Collins. There are many ways to describe Matt s actions a random act of kindness, making a difference one person at a time. Jesus would understand. When the lawyer correctly identified the good Samaritan as the one who had treated the injured man with compassion, Jesus said simply, Go and do likewise (Luke 10:37). She is the first Native American (Mohawk) to be recognized as a saint by the Catholic Church. She was born in 1656 and died on April 17, 1680 shortly before her 24th birthday. At the age of 18 she converted to Catholicism and took the name of Kateri which is the Mohawk form of Catherine, which she took from St. Catherine of Sienna. Fifty years after her death the first convent for Indian nuns was established in Mexico. They prayed daily for her Sainthood and she was canonized by Pope Benedict on Oct. 21, She is the patron Saint of the environment and ecology. A list of needed supplies for the children attending Our Lady of Guadalupe Homework Center will be provided. Last year was the first time the students had these items for their studies. The children and their parents were so grateful. The collection will begin in early August. Any donations or purchased supplies from Back to School sales will be greatly appreciated. 5 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK: After moving out of the rectory into the cottage this past week, I thought I should give you a mid-summer progress report on pending actions in the parish. First, I am pleased to announce that after interviewing a number of candidates over the past eighteen months, we interviewed a woman who just graduated from the University of Santa Clara. We believe she will enhance our youth ministry programs, junior high, high school and Confirmation for the coming year. On July 1 st we hired Analisa Fuentes to this exciting and challenging Youth Ministry coordinator position for Saint Anthony parish. She prefers to be called Ana. We have high hopes and expectations that she will be able to reach out to the youth and invite them to participate in these vital faith formation processes. Second, the fundraising efforts for the rectory project continue to go well. You have contributed almost $615,000 towards the campaign pledged total of $836,475. This past week we approached Councilman Khamis office to follow-up on our permit application to remodel the existing rectory to ensure that the planning department keeps our project on track in hopes that we can break ground before the fall. The bids from the contractors bidding on the rectory remodel are due at the Diocese on July 14 th. Third, we accepted the low bid for the replacement of the big church roof ($72,372.00) prior to the installation of a solar-photo voltaic system sometime this fall through a PPA (Purchase Power Agreement), in other words, no cost to the parish. It should reduce our electricity bills, make the church a little cooler by shading a portion of the roof and help us to be more ecologically responsible. Fourth, next week the ripped awning over the front doors of the big church will be removed, the frame freshened up with a coat of paint and a new Sunbrella cover installed on Thursday, July 14 th. Fifth, we anticipate improving the fire safety of the little church by removing the three large non-native eucalyptus trees immediately in front of the church and significantly pruning the other four eucalyptus trees. Sixth, last and not least, after tenting the big church for termites, the contractor discovered areas of dry rot, some areas will be repaired when the church is re-roofed and others areas near the green house window and front door will be repaired by another contractor. The exterior of the church will be painted with a new paint product that will last longer than the last paint material as good as it was. When we get the bids for painting the exterior of the church I will let you know how much that is going to cost. We are able to re-roof the church because of a substantial donation restricted for that purpose several years ago. All the other projects are coming out of some of our reserves. In light of the rectory campaign, we are not specifically asking for more money, but anyone who has the ability to contribute to the painting of the church or awning replacement, or anything else your financial support will be most appreciated. As you well know there are always repair and maintenance issues and it seems we have several major ones coming due at this time because the church building is going to be 24 years old in September. On average a parish needs to spend around $20,000 in maintenance costs every year to maintain the facilities. We have deferred some items that are now coming due, all at once. I appreciate your stewardship and support of the parish. Finally, I will be taking only three weeks of vacation and plan to return on July 28 th. See you then. Traditionally, there is a dip in donations over the summer months when people are away. However, the church expenses continue. Please consider setting up an online giving account, if you haven t already done so, so that you can continue to donate to the church even when you are not present. Or, consider sending in your contributions before you leave for any length of time. This would assist us greatly. Thank you or your support! Friday Night Socials Back by popular demand, we will again be hosting Friday Night Socials on the last Friday of the month through to September. These are informal BBQ s on the Church Plaza. The schedule will be: 7/29 - Men s Night 8/26 - Ladies Night 9/30 - Open to all This is a chance to visit and get better acquainted with other parishioners and Father, in a small relaxing venue. Bring and BBQ your own main course, drinks, plates and utensils and we will provide the BBQ Grill and 3 side dishes. Admission is $5.00 for adults with children under 12 free. The socials will run from 6 to 8 p.m.
