CONFIRMATION FOR TEENS Celebrated every other year in the Easter Season. Candidates for this Sacrament should call the Catechetical Office at ANOINTING & CARE OF THE SICK If you or someone you know is preparing for surgery, received a recent serious medical diagnosis, or is experiencing the burden of years, please call the parish office for Anointing of the Sick. Communion can be brought to anyone who is ill or homebound through our Pastoral Care Ministers. A communal anointing occurs at Mass annually on/or near the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, Feb. 11. MARRIAGE Couples should contact the parish upon their Engagement and usually 6 months prior to the desired date of the Wedding Ceremony.

3 CATECHETICAL MINISTRY AND UPCOMING PARISH EVENTS Congratulations to Katrina Votaw, our Kindergarten Catechist, who received the Saint Pius X Award on Tuesday, May 9 th at Villa Ragusa in Campbell at the annual Awards Banquet honoring and recognizing those volunteers who generously and lovingly give of their time to the parish catechetical program. Katrina has been a Catechist at Saint Anthony Parish for 10 years! We are so fortunate to have her share her faith with the children of our parish and happy to honor her with this special award. Catechist WHAT IS A CATECHIST? The Catechist is a person of faith who leads others in understanding the faith teachings according to the official teachings of the Church, the Catechism of the Catholic Church. The role of the catechist is a vital ministry to the Church. It is a gift that has tremendous value to the world community at large because through the catechist s word and action, the message of Christ continues to have a place in all human affairs. WHAT DOES A CATECHIST DO? The primary goal of a catechist is to model God s love to others. As a result, the primary requisite of a catechist is a love for God and a love for children. A catechist develops a lesson plan and uses that plan to teach in the classroom. By creating the lesson plan the catechist ultimately designs and structures experiences for students that help them grow in their personal faith and spirituality. The catechist passes on to students a set of shared meanings and values that are Catholic and Christian. A catechist also initiates others into the faith community, into its life, its worship, symbols and practices. WHAT IS THE TIME COMMITMENT? Saint Anthony s Religious Education Program (C.R.E.A.T.E. also known as Community Religious Education Appealing To Everyone ) begins in September and ends in April and meets once a week. It follows the holiday schedule of the San Jose Unified School District. Class hours are on Sundays during the 10:30 a.m. Mass for Kindergarten, and Tuesdays from 4:00 p.m. until 5:15 p.m. Our 6 th graders and 7 th /8 th grade students (BLAST) meet every other week on a Tuesday evening from 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. INTERESTED IN BECOMING A CATECHIST? We are always in need of Catechists and provide training for those interested. You don t have to be in the classroom alone.there can be two catechists sharing a class! Our next meeting will be September 8th at 7 p.m. Please mark your calendars now! The Welcome Summer Picnic will be held on Thursday, June 15th, 11:30 a.m., at Almaden Lake Park. Park on Winfield Blvd. and walk in (or pay for parking). We will be at the picnic tables to the left of the Bocce Ball Court. Bring your own plate, utensils and beverage and a side to share! It is lit and contained in a thurible. A thurible is made of metal and has a small container where the incense burns. You Did It For Me An island in Southeast Asia, Timor Leste, is prone to natural disasters, like flooding. And when the country was four years old, political unrest turned into violence when whole villages were burnt to the ground. 5 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK: Today we celebrate the feast of the Ascension. We believe that following the Resurrection, Jesus ascended into heaven to sit at the right hand of the Father. In the past it was celebrated on the Thursday of the Sixth week of Easter. Fifty years ago, the feast of the Ascension moved from Thursday to Sunday, in particular for the Diocese of San Jose and for most dioceses in the United States. Only the ecclesiastical provinces of Hartford, Boston, New York, Newark, Omaha, and Philadelphia retain this celebration on Thursday of the Sixth week of Easter. The chronology of dating the Ascension to forty days after Easter exists only in the Acts of the Apostles. In the Gospel of Luke, the Ascension appears to have taken place much earlier, even on Easter Day. The original ending of Mark s Gospel did not include the Ascension at all, and it can only be inferred from Matthew s conclusion. It seems this became a universal feast by the fifth century. In the Holy Land on the ridge above the Garden of Gethsemane is an Orthodox eight sided church where the faithful believe Jesus ascended and left his foot print on a rock that is still reverenced today. We need touchpoints and this is one sacred place where people can reflect and pray as they listen to one of the Ascension accounts given in the scriptures. Two authors Stephen Bevans and Roger Schroeder suggest the following for our reflection on the feast of the Ascension: The church of Christ does not so much have a mission as the mission of Christ has a church. Like the apostles, and all disciples, it is Christ s mission, Christ s work, that we are invited to take up. We have to figure out what part of the work is ours. That work changes throughout our lives. As I have written before, through Christ we are given a variety of gifts, first at Baptism, then at Confirmation, all the natural or developed gifts we use in our lives each day. We know that Christ has chosen us and given us the gifts we need to serve Him and others every day. What are the gifts God has given to you? Some are self-evident like life, breath, and the ability to think and function in our respective vocations that may include school being a student, engaging in our work and even in retirement, how we choose to spend our time. Other gifts and talents emerge out of virtues: compassion, empathy, peace-making, arbitration, negotiation, mediation, mentoring, tutoring, giving example, and modeling Christian behavior. Recognizing we are chosen and called by name, how is God choosing you/us to go forth and bear much fruit this day? How is Christ calling you/us now to love one another? Let us reflect on these thoughts in our daily prayer and see how our gifts and talents are put into action. Pray in good times and in bad. Prayer is always the first best option in any situation, not just the last resort. Pray for friends and family and for those that don t treat you very well. Pray to give praise, to thank and to ask God for help. Pray to see what God wants you to do with the gifts He has given you. Congratulations Father Larry on your 40 th anniversary of ordination. Thank you for your constant guidance and support as you shepherd our lives along the path to God. Your humble service inspires us all to find opportunities in our lives to do God s work. May God continue to bless you for many more years to come! You are invited to write your anonymous prayer intentions on a card and place it in the box. The box will enter the Church with the procession and be placed at the altar. If you were unable to place your prayer in the box before Mass, you are welcome to do so when you approach the altar during the stewardship collection. The prayers will not be read out loud. They will be acknowledged with the Prayers of the Faithful and then shredded after the 5:30 p.m. Mass so they can be lifted up in prayer all day! May those intentions you keep in the silence of your hearts feel heard in a new and supportive way.
