July 8 Public Welcome of Delegates to the 2012 International Conference of Leaders MEADOWLANDS: READY FOR YOUR PENNIES Donate the penny: Flaherty Stop hoarding the coins and give them to charities MARK DUNN Senior National Reporter OTTAWA - Finance Minister Jim Flaherty called on Canadians on Thursday to liberate their pennies and donate the long-suffering coins to charity. Flaherty used the bill to implement the March 29 budget as an opportunity to call on penny-pinchers to set the coin free for a good cause since the Royal Canadian Mint will stop producing the currency in the fall. "This has happened in other countries," he said. "It's a tremendous opportunity for charitable organizations to make use of the fact that we are going to discontinue manufacturing pennies very soon." The government will save $11 million a year when production stops. It estimates tens of millions of pennies are being hoarded. Consumers can continue to use pennies indefinitely. But if you are penniless in a store, cash transactions will be rounded to the nearest five-cent increment. Cheques, credit and debit cards will continue to be settled to the cent. Other countries such as Australia and New Zealand didn't see an increase in inflation when they got rid of one-cent coins.
