2 Welcome to St. Michael Church PRAYERS BEFORE WORSHIP Merciful God, as we pour out the wealth you have entrusted to us, the parched places are watered; as we cease our evil talk, the rising light of peace dawns in the darkness. So lead us into faithful living that your promises may unfold in us as a woman s back, long bent, unfolds at Christ s command, to the praise of your holy name. Amen Compassionate Savior, come with your healing to every part of our life that needs your attention. Help us to interpret God s Word in a manner that follows your example and not the example of those who love the word more than he who spoke it. Amen WORSHIP NOTES Called to contemplate the cost of discipleship today, we might be helped by translating Paul s request to Philemon into our prayer of the day: Refresh my heart in Christ. Strengthened by the company and forgiveness of the Christ in the blessed sacrament and recalling God s grace in remembrance of baptism, we can be strengthened in this hour to choose life to choose life in God as our own. As a result of our association with Community Aid we will receive compensation for he donated items as well as vouchers that the pastor can use to help the needy. CAPITAL REGION EX-OFFENDER SUPPORT COALITION Capital Region Ex-Offender Support Coalition (CRESC) in partnership with Christian Churches United is holding a First Friday Mentoring College for persons to get training in working with returning citizens. If you feel you may be interested in mentoring a person coming back into our community from incarceration, please see the flyer posted on the bulletin board in the social hall for more information or a contact name and number. SHARING OUR CARING On Monday September 12th the monthly Sharing Our Caring Dinner will be held at Metropolitan Community Church of the Spirit, 2973 Jefferson Street, Hbg. A nutritious meal will be prepared and served to those persons living in the Harrisburg area who are affected with AIDS/ HIV. If you would like to help with the dinner or need more information, please see any member of MTS, Sue McDonald, Wayne Noss, Cheryl Smith, Susan Wesley. GOD S WORK, OUR HANDS On Sunday, September 11 th, we have been invited, along with Communities of Hope, and Tree of Life, and other congregations to gather at 12:30pm in the fellowship hall of Tree of Life church (1492 Linglestown Road) for pizza provided by Thrivent and for instructions as to how we are dividing up to go to different locations to tend trees. The plan was to plant trees in the city, but that plan has been modified. The city has asked that rather than planting trees, we provide much needed mulching and pruning of trees (which they will give short and easy directions for). So we will be Tree Hugging, rather than Tree Planting, hoping to care for many of the city's trees. You need not sign up to participate, but there is a signup sheet posted on the bulletin board in the social hall so you can see who is planning to participate. RACISM It has been said that Racism is America s original sin. Not talking about it, not caring about it, not doing anything to push back against it, not standing with those who are hurt by it, is to walk by on the other side of the road like the Levite and the Priest in the story of the Good Samaritan. Here at St. Michael we will explore Racism in a series of Soul Food gatherings. The first of which will be on Sunday September 25 th. We will be using the free resource, Christians and Racial Justice published by 2 15

A CELEBRATION OF WORD AND SACRAMENT PRELUDE +++GATHERING+++ CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, abounding in steadfast love toward us, healing the sick and raising the dead, showering us with every good gift. Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Silence is kept for reflection. Just and gracious God, we come to you for healing and life. Our sins hurt others and diminish us; we confess them to you. Our lives bear the scars of sin; we bring these also to you. Show us your mercy, O God. Bind up our wounds, forgive us our sins, and free us to love, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Savior. The apostle Paul assures us: When we were dead in our trespasses, God made us alive together with Christ, nailing the record of our sins to the cross. Jesus says to you, Your sins are forgiven. 5 For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. COMMUNION Communion is open to anyone who seeks to respond to Christ's love. To receive communion the assembly approaches the altar rail by the center aisle in two rows. The pastor will place the host (bread) in your hand, an assisting minister will have the wine. You may receive the wine either by common cup, or from the pouring chalice. To receive from the pouring chalice take a glass from the tray at the front of the center aisle. After you use the glass you may place it in the tray on the window sill as you return to your seat by the side aisle. 6 +++WORD+++ FIRST READING Deuteronomy 30: See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, death and adversity. 16 If you obey the commandments of the Lord your God that I am commanding you today, by loving the Lord your God, walking in his ways, and observing his commandments, decrees, and ordinances, then you shall live and become numerous, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to possess. 17 But if your heart turns away and you do not hear, but are led astray to bow down to other gods and serve them, 18 I declare to you today that you shall perish; you shall not live long in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess. 19 I call heaven and earth to witness against you today that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Choose life so that you and your descendants may live, 20 loving the Lord your God, obeying him, and holding fast to him; for that means life to you and length of days, so that you may live in the land that the Lord swore to give to your ancestors, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. PSALM Psalm 1 The refrain is sung by the cantor, repeated by the assembly. The psalm is sung antiphonally by the cantor and assembly, beginning with the cantor. The assembly sings the refrain where marked. THANKSGIVING AT THE TABLE You are indeed holy, almighty and merciful God. You are most holy, and great is the majesty of your glory. You so loved the world that you gave your only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but have eternal life. We give you thanks for his coming into the world to fulfill for us your holy will and to accomplish all things for our salvation. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup, we proclaim the Lord s death until he comes. Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.
