2 Welcome to St. Michael Church PRAYERS BEFORE WORSHIP Persistently forgiving God, we are a stiff necked and stubborn people who try your patience; yet, instead of giving us up for lost, you seek us out until we return to you. Break our willfulness and bring us back from our wanderings; bend our pride and create in us pure and faithful hearts, which rejoice in your forgiveness made known through Jesus Christ. Amen Lord God, you have given to us, your people, the true bread that comes down from heaven, your Son Jesus Christ. Grant that our souls may be feed by him so that we may abide in him and he in us. Fill us and your Church with the power of Jesus unending life. Amen WORSHIP NOTES Consideration of and care for those in need (especially those at our gate, visible to us, of whom we are aware) is an essential component of good stewardship. It is in the sharing of wealth that we avoid the snare of wealth. It is the one whom death could not hold who comes to us risen from the dead who can free us from the death grip of greed. SWEET and SAVORY We will share in the commemoration of St. Michael and All Angels on September 29. Savor the sweetness of Evening Prayer at 7:00. As always, after worship there will be a time of fellowship with refreshments. (The people of St. Mike s make the best food! ) We look forward to indulging with sweet or savory goodies. Please bring something you d love to share that is easy to serve. Until then, we relish the thought of spending the evening together. FINIAL PROJECT The project to replace the stone finials on the State Street façade of the building is nearing completion. The cost of the project has come in significantly under budget. This means that there is money left over from the donations generous members made to complete this project. If you were a donor and would like a refund, please speak to Duane Daub or Mike Ennis. Otherwise, money left over will be put towards the bathroom renovation project. BENEFIT LUNCHEON AND FASHION SHOW On Sunday, October 9 a luncheon and fashion show to benefit the St. Barnabas Center for Ministry will be held at the Radisson Hotel in Camp Hill. Doors will open at 12:30 with lunch being served at 1:00. The fashion show provided by Chico's will begin at 2:00 with four clergy women having been recruited as models. There will also be an opportunity to bid on some wonderful donated items during a silent auction. RACISM It has been said that Racism is America s original sin. Not talking about it, not caring about it, not doing anything to push back against it, not standing with those who are hurt by it, is to walk by on the other side of the road like the Levite and the Priest in the story of the Good Samaritan. Here at St. Michael we will explore Racism in a series of Soul Food gatherings. The first of which will be today. 5 COMMUNION Communion is open to anyone who seeks to respond to Christ's love. To receive communion the assembly approaches the altar rail by the center aisle in two rows. The pastor will place the host (bread) in your hand, an assisting minister will have the wine. You may receive the wine either by common cup, or from the pouring chalice. To receive from the pouring chalice take a glass from the tray at the front of the center aisle. After you use the glass you may place it in the tray on the window sill as you return to your seat by the side aisle. Do this for the remembrance of me. Do this for the remembrance of me. Remembering, therefore, his life given for us and his rising from the grave, we await his coming again to share with us the everlasting feast. By your Spirit nurture and sustain us with this meal: strengthen us to serve all in hunger and want, and by this bread and cup make of us the body of your Son. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 In Hades, where he was being tormented, he looked up and saw Abraham far away with Lazarus by his side. 24 He called out, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in agony in these flames. 25 But Abraham said, Child, remember that during your lifetime you received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in agony. 26 Besides all this, between you and us a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who might want to pass from here to you cannot do so, and no one can cross from there to us. 27 He said, Then, father, I beg you to send him to my father s house 28 for I have five brothers that he may warn them, so that they will not also come into this place of torment. 29 Abraham replied, They have Moses and the prophets; they should listen to them. 30 He said, No, father Abraham; but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent. 31 He said to him, If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.
