2 Welcome to St. Michael Church In a world polluted by noise, we should be able to expect the privilege of silence for meditation and preparation as we enter the space set aside for our public worship. In that spirit, we ask you for silence and offer the devotional aids below for your use as you await the start of the service and during the prelude. Prayers Before Worship Eternal God, we remember on this day how your Holy Spirit worked in the heart of impetuous Peter to express the classic confession of faith in your Son Jesus Christ. Continue the blessings of your Holy Spirit upon us so that at all times we will root our lives in Jesus as your Son and our Savior. Mighty God, your hands hold the power of life itself. You restore life in the face of death, bringing hope out of despair and promise out of destruction. Through the breath of your Spirit bring new life to us, that we may announce to the world the power of your presence made known in Jesus Christ our Savior. Worship Notes. Peter's confession, that Jesus is "the Messiah, the Son of the living God," is rock solid. Jesus is the stone rejected by the builders that has become the cornerstone. The psalmist celebrates God as "my rock in whom I put my trust." Paul refers to Christ as the "spiritual rock" that followed the children of Israel in the wilderness. Even the Greek petros, from which Peter's name comes, means stone. The assembly gathers again today to honor the Son of the living God and longs to be recognized as companions of Jesus. Persons with impairments - St. Michael offers to those with any type of hearing difficulty a small, remote personal speaker which provides the user an amplified, high quality audio of the entire service. We invite our guests who may have the need for such an accommodation to ask an usher for a personal speaker. (They are available upon entering the Nave.) LET'S ALL GATHER IN THE WINTER! - Make a commitment to walking twice a week with a fun group of people. We meet at the Information Desk in the Colonial Park Mall on Mondays and Wednesdays at 9:30 am to listen to a piece of scripture or a poem and then walk together for minutes. SOUPER BOWL OF CARING Mark your calendars now! On Sunday, February 1st the Souper Bowl of Caring will be held. This is a special year for the Souper Bowl. It marks the 25th anniversary for this ministry, started by a youth group in Texas, dedicated in the fight against hunger and poverty nation wide. To date this ministry has collected more than $100 million, all of which is given to charity. Following morning worship please plan to support this important ministry by staying for a delicious lunch of homemade soups, salad, bread, desserts and drinks. One hundred percent of the money collected will be donated to the Outreach Clinic at Christ Lutheran Church. What a better way to start your Sunday than with worship followed by fellowship and good food. THE EAKEN PIANO TRIO will perform in concert on Sunday, February 8 at 3 P.M. at First Lutheran Church, 21 S. Bedford Street, Carlisle. 5 LORD'S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. COMMUNION Communion is open to anyone who seeks to respond to Christ's love. To receive communion the assembly follows the choir, approaching the altar rail by the center aisle in two rows. Individuals fill in at the next open spot at the rail on their side of the aisle. You may kneel or stand. The pastor will come around and place the host (bread) in your hand, an assisting minister will have the wine. You may receive the wine either by common cup, or from the pouring chalice. To receive from the pouring chalice take a glass from the tray at the front of the center aisle. After you use the glass you may place it in the tray on the window sill as you return to your seat by the side aisle. COMMUNION SONG PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray. Almighty God, you inspired Simon Peter to confess Jesus as the Messiah and Son of the living God. Keep your church firm on the rock of this faith, so that in unity and peace it may proclaim one truth and follow one Lord, your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 12 5

6 +++WORD+++ FIRST READING Acts 4: Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, "Rulers of the people and elders, 9 if we are questioned today because of a good deed done to someone who was sick and are asked how this man has been healed, 10 let it be known to all of you, and to all the people of Israel, that this man is standing before you in good health by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead. 11 This Jesus is 'the stone that was rejected by you, the builders; it has become the cornerstone.' 12 There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among mortals by which we must be saved." 13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John and realized that they were uneducated and ordinary men, they were amazed and recognized them as companions of Jesus. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.
