ACT BOLDLY WITH GOD S HELP IN YOUR HEALTH ISSUES In looking forward to the new year, everyone usually has some new resolutions for the upcoming year. I am no different I make plans to loose weight, walk more, give some lonely person a cheerful telephone call, or maybe bake and share some goodies. All good intentions. Have you given any thought to your own health issues and how you can glorify God with your good health or with God s help and guidance improve some of your health issues?. The Bible study for our retreats this season is ACTING BOLDLY WITH GOD S HELP IN HEALTH ISSUES. With this study we will be more aware of women of the Bible and how they did act boldly in their own health. Living through stresses can definitely effect our health. Knowing God is with us when we are feeling low helps to boost our health. As sisters in Christ as we look out for each other, God s love is shared among us as we heal and grow. The first retreat is on the east side on February 2nd and 3rd at Shalom Camp near Maquoketa just off of Highway 61, north of Maquoketa. Maps will be sent. The second retreat more to the west will be at the Christian Conference Center in Newton, on March 2nd and 3rd. This is the same place it was in Both retreats will start at 3:30 for registration. The cost is $25 for each attendee. The evening meal will be served at approximately 5:00. We re planning on having two lessons on Friday evening and still have time for renewing friendships or meeting some new sisters in Christ, some singing, chatting and laughing, eating the goodies that everyone brings along to share and have a good night s rest. Breakfast will be ready by 7:00 so the Bible study can start by around 8:30. We ll have a break and start the final lesson about 10:15. With lunch at noon, Communion will be served about 1:15 before we break apart as a group and head for home. I surely hope to see lots of you as we gather to relax, retreat, reclaim ourselves, recreate, and be renewed! See more information and registration form on Page 2 IN THIS ISSUE... My mom took us off and on to Sunday School when we were very young, but it was when we moved to Wichita that we began attending at a nearby church where my Sunday School teacher knew her Bible and was a great motivator. I accepted Christ at a revival service. This changed my life. When I married, I joined the Lutheran church with my husband because I liked the involvement of the congregation in worship services and the basic teachings of truth and salvation. I feel every day that Jesus is with me wherever I am. But I feel we need to stay close to Him every day, with personal Bible study and prayer. Pat Kolpin Registration for 2007 Winter Retreats. 3 SWO PROFILES Hi! I am the up and coming treasurer for ! They haven't given me the books yet, but I've been to two meetings and counting! I am from Trinity Lutheran Church in Tipton, and have been on the Cluster 7 Board for about 5 years. I have 3 boys, Devin 20, Eric 18 and Daniel 18. Yes, you read it right, I have twin boys both Seniors at Tipton High this year. I work in Iowa City, across from the Synod Office at Mercer Health and Benefits, and have been with them for almost 18 years, currently working in the IT department. I have a love for singing, and have been in our church choir since 1993.I hunt and pick on my guitar sometimes at church, and I feel I am good at baking a mean coconut cream pie, as baking is another favorite of mine. I am looking forward to the next two years as Treasurer, (which I have heard could be a challenge), and am also looking forward to meeting and making new friendships along the way! Gayla Lewis WANTED: Would you enjoy trying on a new hat? The 2006 Nominating Committee is seeking women to serve in a variety of positions on our SWO Board. OUR HATS (POSITIONS) ARE SIZED TO FIT ALL! Please contact: Nancy Locker 801 Prince Street Grinnell, Iowa # Nominating Committee Greetings from your SWO Vice President It's feeling like winter and we started the fireplace a few times this month. 4 Dear Sisters in Christ, Congratulations! The well drilling project from our gathering this summer was a challenge that we met almost five times over. Our goal was to provide funds for Global Health Ministries to dig one well. Together, we raised funds for nearly five wells to be dug. Thank you for your continued support in ministry to the world. We have had a beautiful fall and it has gone by so quickly. We are now entering a most wonderful time of year. I am always in awe at Christmas time. Celebrating the birth of Jesus, gives me such joy and I feel that the beauty of the season enhances my excitement during advent. There is plenty of the commercial Christmas around us and it is easy to be caught up in the hustle and bustle that Christmas time brings. There are so many demands on our time. There are family gatherings to plan, parties to attend, gifts to buy, and all the baking to be done. When our lives our so hectic we can loose perspective on the promise, joy and peace that the birth of our Savior offers to us. Several years ago, I desired to experience the Advent season from a more spiritually filled place within my heart. So now, when I begin to decorate for Christmas, I will bring out my devotional books for Christmas, and place them on tabletop easels throughout my home. During my morning coffee time, I will read from one of these books and savor the importance that Christ has in my life. In like manner, at the end of my day, I again select from one of the books and read by only the lights of the Christmas tree. This devotional advent practice enhances my entire holiday experience. I am able to reflect, that the true joy of the Christmas season is indeed, Jesus Christ. Whatever you do to make Christmas special for you this year, I hope that you will truly experience the wonder of Jesus throughout it all. Blessings for a joyous Christmas! Cathy Soppe Young Womens Advocate I was interested in an article in the September 2006 issue of Interchange about young women that stopped at the Women of the ELCA booth at the youth gathering this summer. They were asked about what would motivate them to be involved with WELCA. Their responses included: "An invitation." "Come up with something besides circles." "It's about companionship-who can I share the common daily things with, woman to woman." "It hurts feelings sometimes when women want to do things a different or new way. Help us work together-find a new way." "Oldest generations need to include younger generations and accept changes." "Address social justice issues." "I'm already inspired to join simply by your presence. thought I wasn't old enough." These are wonderful ideas for us all to ponder and reflect as to how we can change and grow while including more younger women in our organization! Next Spring's pick-up will be April 21, Lutheran World Relief announce a change to material resources program. As of December 31, 2006, LWR will NO LONGER collect clothing of any kind for distribution. Many countries have altered their policies regarding used clothing imports, some are even prohibiting such imports. Clothing imports may disrupt local economies and, in some instances, threaten local textile and clothing manufacturing jobs. Other countries are charging increasingly high customs duties and taxes. In many cases, purchasing clothing locally to support communities in crisis is a better approach. Items purchased locally are cost effective, suitable for local needs, and help to bolster local economies. Roberta Jurgersen Mission Action Co-chair Fall 2006 DIRECTIONS Page 5

6 Cluster #3 The Cluster 3 Spring event was held at Ascension Lutheran Church in Marion on April 29th. The theme was Out of Africa Partners in Mission. Pastor Linda Livingston greeted us and led the bible study. SWO Board member, Nancy Coffman, gave a report from the board with important dates to remember. The ladies served us a wonderful brunch that was enjoyed by all. A group from Gloria Dei in Cedar Rapids presented the program. They had recently returned from a visit to their sister congregation in Tanzania. They shared their stores and pictures with us. It was a very enjoyable morning. The offering that day was divided evenly between the SWO and the Habitat for Humanity house that is being built in partnership with Thrivent and Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity. The cluster 3 Fall event was held at Bethlehem Lutheran in Vinton. The ladies at Vinton served a light brunch before the program. Pastor Urlaub did a short bible study from 1Kings talking about how God always depended on women to take care of things. Dorothy Williamson from Marshalltown presented the program called "Bind Us Together". She talked about her love of quilting and how she got started with it, sharing some of her first quilts that she had acquired and finished. She shared stories from the bible relating them to different quilt squares and how the squares got their names. When she was done she showed a beautiful finished quilt with the squares from the stories. She also provided two beautiful quilted table runners as door prizes. SWO board CLUSTER NEWS representative gave a report from the board and talked about upcoming opportunities for the women to attend. Mary Herb read the minutes from the spring cluster meeting. We closed by singing "We All Are One in Mission". Nancy Coffman Cluster #6 Faith Lutheran Church in Eldridge hosted the Cluster 6 Work Day on Saturday, September 23. Elda Ewoldt, Chairperson of the Women of Faith welcomed all the participants. Pastor Jodi Hinrichs led in devotions by reading "The Quiltmaker's Gift", which was very appropriate for our quiltmaking work day. Gail Abbs from Zion Lutheran Church in Davenport inspired us by telling of the experiences the members of Zion have had with their companion congregation in the Pare Diocese in Tanzania. Lynda Miller gave us a report from the SWO Board. Information regarding WINNIE's Place, a shelter for women and children sponsored by Churches United of Scott and Rock Island Counties, was presented. A part of our offering will be given to this shelter. While this was going on, the women in attendance enjoyed coffee and baked goods. All of the women worked on quilts and rolled bandages during the remaining time. The bandages and quilts will be given to Global Health Ministries, Lutheran World Relief, and Lutheran Services of Iowa. Knitted and crocheted bandages were also collected. These 172 bandages will be given to Global Health Ministries. The Spring meeting of Cluster 6 will be held at Zion Lutheran Church in Davenport on Saturday, April 21 at 9:00 a.m. The speaker will be Pastor Jane Granzow from Calvary Lutheran Church in Buffalo. The topic will be "Healthy in Body, Mind, and Spirit". Pastor Granzow is a perfect example of this life experience. At one time in her life she was a missionary nurse, then decided to come "home" to attend college and seminary and be ordained. She leads an active life by tenting her way to Alaska and travelling world wide to see the Church in action. All women of Cluster 6 Churches and other visitors are invited. Karin Swanson Cluster #7 Cluster 7 Spring Gathering on April 22 at Christ the King church in Iowa City was enjoyable, interesting and well attended. After a short business meeting the group first worked in several rooms tying quilts and making bandages for LWR. Then the group gathered for the 2nd part of the meeting which was a program "Stretch, Flex and Be Fit" presented by Collin Kerstetter, a registered fitness instructor. She led us through a variety of mild exercises that could be done at home or work to maintain our flexibility and balance as we gracefully age. Tipton members gave the opening devotions and Our Redeemer of West Branch gave the closing devotions. Gloria Dei women provided a delicious chicken salad luncheon with tasty desserts. 40 people attended. The group completed many quilts, sewing kits and bandages for LWR. A report was given about the Triennial meeting. Our Fall gathering will be at Zion Lutheran in Muscatine on Page 6 DIRECTIONS Fall 2006

8 Cluster #10/11 Continued... cleaning supplies. There were 26 guests present and 10 of 29 Congregational Units were represented. We were reminded of the Winter Retreats on March 2nd & 3rd for the Western side of the SE Synod and the meeting adjourned. The Spring Gathering will be held at Luther Memorial on March 24th. Phyllis Krumrey Mission: Community We are hoping you all had an opportunity to attend your cluster gathering this fall. If not, be sure to put your spring event on your calendars. These events are always a wonderful opportunity to meet sisters in other congregations for fellowship and sharing. It is enjoyable to see and hear what others have been doing to share their faith and reach out to their communities. Another wonderful opportunity for fellowship is the annual gathering coming in June. On June we will be gathering at First Lutheran in Cedar Rapids and the Clarion Hotel for worship, workshops, and fun. Mark your calendar and we'll see you there. Just as important is reaching out to our global sisters. There are many opportunities to help those who are less fortunate, whether it be in your community or in other countries. The women's website has many links to ways everyone can reach out to communities and ACT BOLDLY to help others. Yours in Christ, Nancy Coffman Page 8 Mission: Action 2007 Gathering Love Gift Projects The HIV/AIDS epidemic has added enormous challenges to health care world wide. Missionaries, their health care worker colleagues, and patients families in third world countries must provide daily care to AIDS patients who suffer from the symptoms of a devastating, end stage disease. There is pain, nausea, diarrhea, skin eruptions, to name a few. It is not a disease we can ignore - and it is not going away. But what can we do to help? An AIDS/Hospice Kit can provide cleanliness and comfort and hope. At our 2007 SE Synodical Gathering in June, we hope to have many many love gifts of knitted and crocheted and rolled bandages and Hospice Kits for Global Health Ministries to use. Our prayers and generosity can reach far into the lives of those who have been affected. As you pack the kit, pray for the church visitation teams and medical professionals who provide spiritual and medical care and place the kits in the hands of those who are affected by AIDS. More information, patterns and illustrations may be found at Rolled Bandage Project Teach kids the importance of helping others by putting together bandages for overseas missions. A simple yet important project, this is ideal for Sunday School classes. Project Details Commercial bandages are often expensive and in short supply, so rolled bandages are needed in many countries. They are made from rolled strips of used bed sheets, white or of any color, any cotton or cotton blend material is suitable. Material should be washed before beginning. Rip the material into strips 2-4 inches wide; sew ends together and assemble strips into rolls about 1-2 inches in diameter. Secure with tape to keep the bandages from unrolling. You can construct a simple bandage rolling machine. The wire crank is a double wire. When bandages are being assembled, the leading edge of the roll is placed between the wires to get the roll started. When the desired quantity is rolled, the crank is slipped out and the bandage roll removed and packed for shipping. Shipping of the bandages is best done in smaller boxes, about 12 x 18. Pack the bandages tightly in the boxes to prevent shifting during shipment. Mark boxes Medical Supplies/NO VALUE. Use the cheapest possible surface rate when shipping them. GHM appreciates any financial gift to defray shipping costs to the final overseas destination. DIRECTIONS Fall 2006

9 A Devotion The following is the devotion I used for a Board Meeting from Malachi 3:3 It says: "He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver." This verse puzzled some women in a Bible study and they wondered what this statement meant about the character and nature of God. One of the women offered to find out the process of refining silver and get back to the group at their next Bible Study. That week, the woman called a silversmith and made an appointment to watch him at work. She didn't mention anything about the reason for her interest beyond her curiosity about the process of refining silver. As she watched the silversmith, he held a piece of silver over the fire and let it heat up. He explained that in refining silver, one needed to hold the silver in the middle of the fire where the flames were hottest as to burn away all the impurities. The woman thought about God holding us in such a hot spot; then she thought again about the verse that says: "He sits as a refiner and purifier of silver." She asked the silversmith if it was true that he had to sit there in front of the fire the whole time the silver was being refined. The man answered that yes, he not only had to sit there holding the silver, but he had to keep his eyes on the silver the entire time it was in the fire. If the silver was left a moment too long in the flames, it would be destroyed. The woman was silent for a moment. Then she asked the silversmith, "How do you know when the silver is fully refined?" He smiled at her and answered, "Oh, that's easy -- when I see my image in it" If today you are feeling the heat of the fire, remember that God has his eye on you and will keep watching you until He sees His image in you. Pass this on right now. This very moment, someone needs to know that God is watching over them. And, whatever they're going through, they'll be a better person in the end. "Life is a coin. You can spend it anyway you wish, but you can only spend it once!" Gayla Lewis Treasurer Next Directions Issue... March, 2007 Deadline: February 10th At the Gathering... Carmen & Friends!
