Born in West Africa, she was sold into slavery at the age of seven or eight and transported to North America. She was purchased by the Wheatley family of Boston, who taught her to read and write and encouraged her poetry when they saw her talent. he publication of her Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral (1773) brought her fame both in England and the American colonies. Figures such as George Washington praised her work. Many colonists found it difficult to believe that an African slave was writing "excellent" poetry. Wheatley had to defend her authorship of her poetry in court in She was examined by a group of Boston luminaries, including John Erving, Reverend Charles Chauncey, John Hancock, homas Hutchinson, the governor of Massachusetts, and his lieutenant governor Andrew Oliver. hey concluded she had written the poems ascribed to her and signed an attestation, which was included in the preface of her book. Publishers in Boston had declined to publish it, but her work was of great interest in London. here, Selina, Countess of Huntingdon and the Earl of Dartmouth acted as patrons to help Wheatley gain publication. Wheatley was emancipated (set free) shortly after the publication of her book. She married in about wo of her children died as infants. After her husband was imprisoned for debt in 1784, Wheatley fell into poverty and died of illness, quickly followed by the death of her surviving infant son. Below is the second prayer. In unity of spirit, in the bond of peace, and in righteousness of life. O God, the Creator and Preserver of all mankind; in whom to dwell is to find peace and security; toward whom to turn is to find life and life eternal, we humbly beseech hee for all sorts and conditions of men; that thou wouldst be pleased to make thy ways known unto them, hy saving health unto all nations. We also pray for hy holy Church universal; that it may be so guided and governed by hy Spirit, that all who profess and call themselves Christians may be led into the way of truth, and hold the faith in unity of spirit, in the bond of peace, and in righteousness of life. Finally, we commend to hy Fatherly goodness all those who are in any way afflicted or distressed in mind or body. 11 A Call to Action: A Labor of Love He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? (Micah 6:8 NASB) by Minister Ella C. Scales God has called us to a life of love. A love that is demonstrated in the way we treat one another. Love that is determined to build up and seek peace with all men. We can no longer be satisfied with coming to church week after week and not do what God is calling us to; Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. (Matthew28:19-20 NASB). We go in the authority and power given to us by Jesus through the Holy Spirit. We can no longer be okay with business as usual while our neighbors are suffering. It is time for us to be the Church: the very body that Christ died for and rose again for. Jesus said he came that we might have life and have it more abundantly. (John 10:10b) Just as Jesus came also to proclaim good news to the poor, proclaim release to the captives, recovery of sight to the blind and set the oppressed free and proclaim the favorable year of the Lord, we are to do the same and more, because He also said we would do greater works. (Isaiah 61:1-2, Luke 4:18-19, John 14:12) So let us get involved in the community where God has placed us. Places where we can serve: 1. Swissvale Community Action Committee (SCAC), a place to get involved in the community specific to Swissvale. See Leland Scales for more details or follow on Facebook for meetings/activities. 2. Pennsylvania Interfaith Impact Network (PIIN), if you have a heart for social justice this is for you; issues PIIN are currently working on is Education, Affordable Housing, Public Safety, ransformational Justice, Immigration, and more. Visit piin.org for more information and scheduled meetings/events. 3. rader Sunday, where we, Union Baptist Church, on the fifth Sunday of a month dedicate this time to GO into the community to serve in various ways. Look for opportunities of upcoming service dates in the church bulletin and other church communication sources. hese are just a few ways we can get started. May this be a year of putting our faith into action by bringing love and hope to the hurting, lost, and disenfranchised in our community and our sphere of influence. Let us BE HE CHANGE for a better community! *Additional Scriptures to read during the month: John 13:35, 1 John 3:14-23, 1 John 4:7-21, 1Corinthians chapters 12-14, Luke 10:2, and Isaiah 58.
