Amen. - Matthew 28:18-20 (NKJV) Definitions Christian discipleship is the process in which followers of Jesus deepen their knowledge and habits of living a Christian life. Development in anything is growth, maturing, or progress. Discipleship Development, then is the growth and maturing in a disciple s willingness and ability to internalize and live out the teachings of Jesus. From the cradle to the grave, all disciples should have the opportunity to mature in their Christian living which brings glory to our God. For this reason, the Discipleship Development team at Union Baptist Church is working to provide access to tools and opportunities for growth beginning with discipleship quads that use the Bible as the model for discipleship. What We Need From the Congregation As we are engaging in this great work, which will include the entire congregation, we need your prayers as well. When you pray for us ask of the Lord: When you pray for us, ask the Lord: o increase our resolve to please Jesus and disciple the nations. o increase our dedication to personal prayer, study, and worship. o help us build nurturing relationships where disciples can sharpen and challenge one another. o cause the passion for biblical discipleship to spread like wildfire! 9 Union Baptist Church of Swissvale HE PASORAL SEARCH PROCESS Within the next several weeks, Union Baptist Church needs to elect a Pastor Search Committee. So serious is this work that it is necessary to advise all members of the nature of this work and what is required of the persons who form this Committee or eam. You will share in nominating and electing this Committee. You ll do this job well only if you understand what this work requires. he work of a Pastor Search Committee is outlined below. When you begin to think of persons you would like to see on this Committee, think about these requirements, below. Search committee members should be in good standing with the congregation; their record should demonstrate commitment to Union s life and well-being. 2. he search committee should reflect a wide cross-section of the congregation: male, female, young, older, leaders, nonleaders, vocal, quiet. A team of less than 7 may be too small; a team of 13 may be too large. For UBC, 7 or 9 feels just right. 3. Persons who are unable to commit to meeting weekly, or once every two weeks, for between 60 and 120 minutes each meeting, and for possibly months, should think long and hard about not serving on the search committee, if asked. his is long and hard work, but it is rewarding and spiritual work. 4. he chairperson (or co-chairpersons) of this committee, must be mature, approachable, wise, competent, understand process, and be a true leader who inspires and motivates the team, intellectually stimulates the team, informs and influences the team towards high ideas and ideals, and along the way, cares for each team members through individual concern and consideration. Without being a pastor, this person needs to have a pastor s heart, and help the team bring forth its best, especially since the journey shall be long and hard. I cannot overemphasize how hard this work shall be, but how joyful it can be. 5. he ABCOPAD consultant shall be the team s shepherd and confidant and strong arm through the process. Rev.
