Episcopal Church of St. Matthew February 2015 Qualities of a Community By Fr. Rick Wilson Recently, I finished reading a book entitled A Celtic Model of Ministry: The Reawakening of Community Spirituality by the Rev. Jerry C. Doherty. When I began reading it, I found myself first is a crisis of individualism the I can do it myself and need not receive help nor give help perspective; a crisis of faith fewer and fewer people today do believe in the presence of God in Unchristian: What a New Generation Really Thinks about Christianity and Why it Matters. The author, David Kinnaman, states quite frankly: Christianity has an image problem. The The Online Newsletter is a production of lay ministers and the clergy. Please all articles or photos to the editor, Julie Neff- Encinas at jneffencinas@cox.net not wanting to put it their lives or in the people he approached in down. Furthermore, the perspective is Caring Casseroles 4 was a most interesting book. The bulk of the book addressed three types of crisis in our western society. The differently than everyone else. This last perspective reminded me of a book I read a few years ago, that Christians have lost their way with regard to following Jesus. Fr. Doherty has a cure for this. We ve welcomed new families, baptized new Christians, mourned the losses of beloved members, cheered at weddings and participated in classes, outreach events and worship together. These are the moments that create a real community. This edition of the newsletter documents some of these events. Doherty writes that members must be committed to include everyone, to resolve differences, to reach solutions for disagreements that everyone can live with. To be a church, a community, we must include everyone [p. 11]. Doherty by saying that a healthy community resolves differences by reaching consensus. Everyone gives a little in order to follow the decision of the community [p. 13]. Realism. Here Doherty states that an open, honest church community knows it is not perfect. Rev. We were all thrilled to witness their baptisms on the fitting date of the Baptism of Jesus. Now that the kids are legally Voglers, we can finally show their faces in photographs! So here are a few photos. A few more appear in the Photo Addendum.

Page 3 Qualities of a Community (cont.) (Continued from page 2) which you will tire and remember in seminary find your fire again. one of my professors are a good people just not perfect. I like very much the following statement from Doherty, if everyone s opinion is heard and valued, if conflicts and arguments occur and are resolved, then it is a realistic community [p. 14]. On occasion someone will ask me about doubt. My response is that doubt is faith looking for something deeper. Doubt is not the opposite of faith; apathy is the opposite of faith. It is when you no longer care to ask the question, do the seeking, or wrestle with concerns, that you have chucked your faith. And even then, I hope it is a brief stage of Contemplation. It was in college that I heard for the first time the quote that an unexamined life is not worth the living which is attributed to the ancient philosopher Socrates. I was fascinated by the statement and thought about it quite a bit. Fr. Doherty simply states that the healthy church community examines itself. Within this examination, we see that we are not a perfect people but we are all imperfect, broken people. We are in church precisely because we are not perfect, are not in control, and do not have all the answers [p.14]. I stated that there are simple answers but they are wrong. As we examine ourselves individually and as a church, we know we haven t finished growing. Healing and transformation. Fr. Doherty uses the term converting instead of transforming but I prefer our more Anglican word, transforming. The church community, to be healthy, allows the members to bring to one another whatever they are experiencing: joy, sorrow, hurts, doubts. Furthermore Doherty maintains, it is a place to begin life again [p. 15]. Here we come with everything we have (Continued on page 6) an unexamined life is not worth the living Baptism of Lilly and Daniel (cont.)

Page 4 Caring Casseroles: A Pastoral Care Ministry When parishioners are ill or injured for an extended period of time, our pastoral care team would like to provide support by arranging for dinner meals for the entire family. For this to work, we need two things: 1) if you or a family member experiences an illness or injury making the normal function of the home difficult, please contact the church office and tell us that you need help. 2) if you d be willing to put together a meal for a single, couple or a family, please call the church office or speak to Helga Small who coordinates it all. Typically it is encouraged that you take a casserole, pot of soup or similar meal along with bread and possibly a salad or side dish that is enough for two days of meals. So we need seven providers to cover the two weeks. The more people who sign up, the less frequently you d be called upon to contribute. If it is easier, you can team with someone to provide a meal. Remember: A friend in need is a friend indeed! We hope you will consider helping a friend in need. Annual Luncheon and Meeting Smooth Sailing On Sunday, January 25 our parish community came together to worship, share a yummy lasagna luncheon and conduct our annual meeting. We took the time to honor special people, review the budget for 2015 and elect volunteers to several positions. Thank you to everyone who came and participated with us. (More photos continue on the next page and in the Photo Addendum.)

The Library is still open for parishioner check outs on Sundays after each service. Annual Meeting Highlights Susan Johnston was the lucky raffle winner who went home with the lovely molded paper sculpture created and donated by Johanne Coleman. Retiring Deacon Bill Martin was honored for his many years of service to the parish. Outgoing Vestry members Mary-Helen Douglas, Bob Greene and Adam Drudge were honored with engraved gifts.

Page 6 Qualities of a Community (cont.) and admit what we are experiencing. I recall over a year and a few months ago when my mother died, just how caring members of our parish were to me. Grieving is a healing process and many people in the parish showed the type of compassion and gentleness that made the process more healthy for me. A church needs to be a safe place somewhere that whatever one is experiencing is welcomed to be experienced. All of us are on a journey and the journey is not on streets paved with gold but rather roads that have stretches of an even incline and other places where it is rugged and where it dips. Spirit. A true community has a spirit, a spirit of peace and love [p. 15], states Doherty. This is the energy of a community. It is what a person picks up on as one enters the community. It is a spirit of warmth and acceptance. Within the Christian tradition, this spirit is the Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit, Doherty maintains. It reflects the nature of God as the Trinity of a community united as one. As I reflect on this element of a community, I am reminded of Psalm 133:1, How good and pleasant it is when God's people live together in unity! [New International Version] That needs to be the experience of the church if it is to be a community. Furthermore, I am reminded of the praise song, There s a sweet, sweet spirit in this place, and I know it is the spirit of the Lord. These are the characteristics that are needed for the church to be a community according to Doherty. He further states that the formation of community should be a congregation s main task. Ours is a fragmented society. A Christian church living as a true community can provide the context for experiencing the presence of God. As I look over these five characteristics of a healthy community, I ask myself how the Episcopal Church of St. Matthew fares as a healthy community. I see elements of these characteristics in varying degrees within our church. And I couple that observation with a prayer that God help us grow in each of these characteristics. We have so much going for us! Within our Christian tradition, we trust that God is the giver of all - the Creator, the Redeemer, the Sustainer. We trust that we live in a universe brought into being by an Ultimate Reality that is invested in being present throughout all of the universe. Furthermore, we trust that we have been given the ability to love, dream, imagine, create, and reflect. One of my favorite expressions about how alive we really are comes from the writing of a 20 th Century Anglican writer, Charles Williams. Williams wrote, Flesh knows what Spirit knows but Spirit knows it knows! We are after all enfleshed spirits! We trust that the Ultimate Reality walks with us through all creation through the incomprehensible God which is closer to our self than our flesh is to our skin, through the Word made flesh who gave us an example of living the gift of who we are by loving God and all others, through the Spirit of God constantly moving throughout all creation, the hearts and minds of all people and sealed within the Christian at baptism as one is marked as Christ s own forever. We also have our questions, our doubts, and our irritations! Thank God for the book of Psalms. We can relate. With all of this and with striving to be a community that is inclusive, realistic, contemplative, healing and transforming, and with spirit, how can we not offer to others our witness that not only God is but that God loves?

Page 8 Pastoral Care: Part Three by Courtney Barnes Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love, Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is doubt, faith; Where there is despair, hope; Where there is darkness, light; And where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved, as to love. For it is in giving that we receive, It is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Francis of Assisi By extending kindness and concern to someone who is going through a difficult time due to hardship, grief, illness or injury; you become an instrument through which God can minister peace, love, and joy to others. When you console another in their distress, you are fulfilling God s call to love your neighbor in a meaningful way. When you give someone something that they need, you enjoy the heartfelt blessing of bringing happiness into another s life, while alleviating their suffering. In order to be wellequipped for pastoral care, we have a responsibility to sensitively use the tools we have as Christians to minister to others in ways that are uplifting, effective and life-changing. Through God s presence, our own availability, by sharing encouraging Bible verses, by demonstrating a heart of caring, and by sharing the good news that God loves everyone we can make a difference. When someone they know is ill, sometimes people do not know what to say, so they don t say anything. The silence can be deafening for someone who is social and used to being around friends and family. The loneliness they feel can be compounded by a hospital stay or the inability to drive to services following surgery. Remember, you don t need to have special skills or training to simply be a good friend. Just treat the person how you would like to be treated if you were sick or in crisis. By asking how someone is doing, you will be reaching out to that person and making them feel cared about. If someone you know at St. Matthew s is suffering from an illness, is in the hospital or is struggling with a physical infirmity one of the simplest ways to show you care is to call or them. This can spark a dialogue. If you gently inquire about the person s needs they will feel supported and cared about. Then listen carefully. It may be that a person s family is already meeting their needs, or they may not have enough support and they may urgently need your assistance. Be ready to respond to any needs. It is important that you allow them to decide if they want or need your help. Respect their answer. If they indicate they are struggling and need your help, then do all you can to meet the needs they express, if it is in your power to do so. If the need they have is greater than the resources and time you can offer, then ask others in the congregation to help you meet their need. It can be as simple as making a few phone calls. A pastoral care visit usually includes time spent speaking with and listening to the person, offering prayer, bringing a meal, offering a benediction or blessing, communion, practical assistance with household chores and transportation and spiritual comfort and encouragement. If you can do one or more of these things, then you are able to offer someone in the congregation pastoral care.

Page 9 Pastoral Care: Part Three (cont.) Do not underestimate the kindness of a simple gesture such as checking the list each week for names of ill parishioners located to the left of the name tag board and sending a friendly , greeting card or calling the person to talk for a while. Even if you are busy with work and other responsibilities; you may find that you can work opportunities to minister to others into your schedule by making pastoral care a priority. By reaching out and showing you care, you will help to counteract the spiritual strain and loneliness that often accompany illness. The person, instead of feeling isolated by their illness and abandoned by friends, will feel cared about and be drawn closer to you and more importantly to God as a result. Love is a verb. Ask yourself today what you can do to offer pastoral care to someone in need. By doing this you will be strengthening the St. Matthew s household of faith one person at a time and simultaneously fulfilling the commission to all who believe, to offer pastoral care to those most in need. Matthew 10:42 And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward. Tools for Pastoral Care Visits God: God s supportive presence makes every aspect of your caring relationships distinctively Christian from the start. By allowing God to fill us with his love for others we are acting as a conduit and catalyst for positive change in our communities. There is no greater or more transformative gift than the love of Jesus Christ. Availability: Letting someone know that you are there for them communicates caring. Bible: Sharing uplifting and encouraging psalms and verses chosen sensitively for the person can be a powerful way of demonstrating your love for the person and how much you care. Caring: Using the tools of Christian faith: prayer, communion, benediction and compassionate listening will help you meet the needs of the person who is suffering. Simply being present with a person in their suffering is an effective way to communicate caring. When a caregiver lets another know by their words and actions that they are willing to help them struggle through their problems, they instill in that person hope. Evangelism: The act of bringing good news to someone is known as evangelism. Christian evangelism is sharing the beautiful fact that God loves us and that he demonstrated his love for us by winning the victory over sin and death in the redemptive sacrifice and resurrection of his son, Jesus Christ. Evangelism is a dialogue, not a monologue. If we care about someone we will take the time to listen to them and to respond to their concerns and fears with compassion and kindness.

Page 10 Senior Warden Ramblings by Carol Walker The New Year has started off with a bang and we had our annual meeting on January 25 th. The hospitality group had been very busy preparing food for two Celebration of Life receptions, plus the luncheon prior to the annual meeting, which all took place 2 weeks in a row. They do a superior job in the kitchen and I thank each of them who work under the leadership of Dawn Stoner. The next big event is our Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper which will be on February 17 th. It is difficult to believe that time has passed so quickly since Christmas, but I can smell those pancakes cooking already. And now, back to the annual meeting of the Episcopal Church of St. Matthew. Susan Johnston was the lucky winner of the raffle drawing for the Heron Artwork that Johanne Coleman created and donated with the money going to the 50 th Anniversary Capital Campaign. We had three going off vestry and elected three new vestry members. Thanks to Mary-Helen Douglas, who was clerk of the vestry, Bob Greene, who was our Financial Committee chairman, and Adam Drudge, who was chair of the Stewardship Commission for their commitment and faithful devotion to St. Matthew s. Mary-Helen and Bob were on vestry for a 3 year term. Adam had filled a vacancy on vestry less than 18 months ago and since that term was completed, he was now eligible to be elected for a 3 yr. term on vestry. Congratulations to those elected to serve a 3 year term on vestry: Virginia Jones, Pat Anderson and Adam Drudge. All are active parishioners and I look forward to working with them this year. I have always said we are truly blessed to have Father Rick as our rector. He works many hours each day and is a wonderful spiritual leader. He is not afraid to try new programs or liturgies as that is how we can grow and serve our neighbors. Father Rick is constantly doing pastoral care, as well. He is an inspiration to many. With Lent coming quickly, the altar guild will be busy on Ash Wednesday draping the crosses with purple veils and preparing for the imposition of ashes. There will be education opportunities as well as Stations of the Cross to attend during the time of Lent. I hope you will take advantage of the offerings during Lent. Lent is a time for self- examination and repentance. Almighty God, you forgive the sins of all who are penitent. Create in us new and contrite hearts, that we may obtain from you perfect forgiveness of our sins. Amen. May God grant us forgiveness of sins as we forgive others. Amen.

Page 11 Blessings Abound at St. Matthew In addition to the baptisms we ve already chronicled in the January edition and this edition, there was another one on the Feast of the Epiphany. On January 4, Vyronica Hopper, the 1 year old daughter of Kasey and Erin Hopper was marked as Christ s own forever. A family member who is an Episcopal priest, the Rev. Claire Wimbush, came from the East Coast to co-officiate with Fr. Rick. May Vyronica grow to appreciate a warm and loving relationship with Jesus. Fr. Christopher Orndorff, Pastor of Corpus Christi, was the officiant and Fr. Rick Wilson, our Rector, assisted by giving the blessing of the rings and offering the Prayers of the People. Several of Don s close friends from the 8:00 service attended the wedding. We can expect to see Don in church on a regular, but intermittent basis so that he can attend church with Susan at Corpus Christi. We all wish Don and Susan the very best in their new life together! A blessing of another type came to Don Snover and his new wife, Susan when they were married at Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church, Tuesday February 10, at 4:00 pm. Lenten Event Schedule Shrove Tuesday Evening Prayer: Tuesday, February 17, 6:00 pm Shrove Tuesday Pancake Dinner: Tuesday, February 17, 6:30 pm in Matt's Place ($4 donation requested and kids under 12 free) Ash Wednesday Liturgies: Wednesday, February 18, 12 noon and 7:00 pm Stations of the Cross: Every Friday of Lent through Good Friday at 6:00 pm

Page 12 St. Matthew s United Thank Offering 2015 Ash Wednesday through Palm Sunday Thank you for participating in the Church of St. Matthew s United Thank Offering (UTO) Ministry Collection by taking home a collection box. This ministry has been carried out in the Episcopal Church since the 1880s. UTO was created to encourage men, women, and children to nurture the habit of giving daily thanks to God. These prayers of thanksgiving start when we recognize and name our many daily blessings. Those who participate in the United Thank Offering have discovered that thankfulness leads to generosity. UTO combines these generous offerings to fund significant projects that make a real difference in the work of the Episcopal Church and in the Anglican Communion and a real difference in people's lives. On pages 14 & 15 of this newsletter you will find calendars of the days of Lent leading from Ash Wednesday to Palm Sunday. The first 19 days are filled with things to be thankful for and you are encouraged to donate a coin for each of the people, things or events in your life that have been a blessing to you from God. Some of them we all share, others might not apply to every person. After the first 19 days, only every other day is filled in. It is hoped that you will have developed the ability to think more deeply about all the blessings in your life and you will fill in the reason you are making your contribution for that day. Of course the coins you choose to use each time are up to you. You may even wish to donate a bill instead of a coin from time to time, let your heart guide you in that decision. We hope parents and grandparents will involve the children in their lives as part of this effort to deepen one s understanding of how God is the true source of everything and we need to be aware of that and be thankful for all we are given the opportunity to use and enjoy. Once you have completed your calendar and filled your box, please count the money in it and write a check made out to St. Matthew s with UTO in the memo area. Then put that into a United Thank Offering envelope that will be available at church during the last weeks of Lent. Our In-Gathering Sunday will be April 13, Palm Sunday, also known as Passion Sunday, when we remember the great sacrifice our Lord made for us. Please be sacrificial in your thank offering on that and every day. Thank you! Julie Neff-Encinas Coordinator for the United Thank Offering 2015
