After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord. John 20:19-20 The Personnel Journal, an offshoot of the Wall Street Journal, reported this incredible statistic: since the beginning of recorded history, the entire world has been at peace less than eight percent of the time. In its study, the periodical discovered that of 3530 years of recorded history, only 286 years saw peace. Moreover, throughout this time, an excess of 8000 peace treaties were made, and all of them have since been broken. No wonder peace in this world is a hard thing to come by. It was the evening of the first Easter, and there was still no peace in Jerusalem. The Roman government was still trying to bring the Jewish Passover mobs under control. The Jewish leaders were running around trying to silence those who were claiming that Jesus had risen from the dead. The disciples were hiding behind locked doors wondering if they were the next ones to be arrested and put to death. There was turmoil, there was disturbance, there was anxiousness, but there was no peace. There was no peace until Jesus appeared. Appearing to his disciples, Jesus simply said, Peace be with you! The disciples who had deserted Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, who had never fully understood Jesus ministry, and who were now hiding their faith behind locked doors. The last thing the disciples would have expected Jesus to say to them was, Peace be with you! The peace Jesus came to bring them was the peace of forgiveness. It was the peace of being made righteous before God. It was the peace of knowing death has been conquered and heaven has been won, for when Jesus showed them his hands and side it removed all doubt that Jesus had arisen from the grave. Even continued on page 3

2 St. Peter s Newsletter April 2016 Page 3 Peace After Easter continued from page 1 though all of Jerusalem was still in earthly turmoil and disturbance, there was for the disciples at that moment in the presence of Jesus a peace for their hearts and souls. It has been quoted by an anonymous author, Peace that Jesus gives is not the absence of trouble, but is rather the confidence that He is there with you always. As long as we live upon this earth, worldly peace will almost always be non-existent. There will be tension between countries, discord in our nation, conflicts at work, strains in friendships, and troubles in the home. But in the presence of Jesus we find a true and lasting peace. Every day we are able to live by faith in the risen Son of God. Every day we live with the peace of our forgiveness, the peace of having been made righteous before God, the peace of having the certainty of eternal life. May the risen Lord grant you his peace in these days after Easter. May the peace of God continue to fill your hearts and souls, as each day we live for the Savior who lived and died for us. It is one of five novellas written about five women in the lineage of Jesus. The others in this Lineage of Grace series are about Ruth, Tamar, Bathsheba and Rahab. Building on the foundation of scripture, the author created action, dialogue and internal motivations consistent with biblical record. The gripping characterizations tell the story like you ve never heard it before. Be with Mary as she receives the news from the angel that she will give birth to the Messiah. Listen to her thoughts and what it all means to her as she sees Jesus grow up and become a man, witnessing his miracles and ministry, suffering, death and resurrection. The story gives possible insight into her personal relationships with Joseph and her other children, the disciples, and especially John, ending with her own death. I recommend this book and I think you will enjoy and be inspired by this insightful story of the Mother of Jesus. At the end of the book the author suggests you seek and find your own answers to the story of Mary from the Bible. Come check it out from the church library today!

5 St. Peter s Newsletter April 2016 Page 6 NURSING POINTS OF INTEREST Sleep Apnea As one who has been diagnosed with sleep apnea and used a CPAP machine for several years, I thought this may be informative for those who wake up more exhausted than when they went to sleep. This is a very serious disorder and it did kill former Green Bay Packer Reggie White. One may not even recognize you have this disorder and think being completely fatigued is normal. Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder that occurs when a person s breathing is interrupted during sleep. People with untreated sleep apnea stop breathing repeatedly during their sleep, sometimes hundreds of times. This means the brain and the rest of the body may not get enough oxygen. There are two types of sleep apnea: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA): The more common of the two forms of apnea, it is caused by a blockage of the airway, usually when the soft tissue in the back of the throat collapses during sleep. Central sleep apnea: Unlike OSA, the airway is not blocked, but the brain fails to signal the muscles to breathe, due to instability in the respiratory control center. Who is at Risk for Sleep Apnea? Sleep apnea can affect anyone at any age, even children. Risk factors for sleep apnea include: Being male Being overweight Being over age 40 Having a large neck size (17 inches or greater in men and 16 inches or greater in women) Having large tonsils, a large tongue, or a small jaw bone Having a family history of sleep apnea Gastro esophageal reflux, or GERD Nasal obstruction due to a deviated septum, allergies, or sinus problems What Are the Effects of Sleep Apnea? If left untreated, sleep apnea can result in a growing number of health problems, including: High blood pressure Stroke Heart failure, irregular heartbeats, and heart attacks Diabetes Depression Worsening of ADHD Headaches In addition, untreated sleep apnea may be responsible for poor performance in everyday activities, such as at work and school, motor vehicle crashes, and academic underachievement in children and adolescents.
