2 WELCOME TO WORSHIP! Twenty-second Sunday after Pentecost October 25, 2015 Martin Luther was born and raised in Germany. The Reformation began in Germany, and soon spread across Europe. Today Lutherans can be found in North and South America, Africa, Asia and Australia. Most Lutherans are not Germans. The good news that we are saved by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone has inspired people all over the world to give all the glory to God alone. PREPARING FOR WORSHIP You are invited to read Psalm 46, which is found on pages of the pew Bible. THE NURSERY is not staffed but is available for parents who have young children who become noisy or restless during the service. We are thankful for families who teach their children to worship by bringing them to church. When your little ones become noisy, feel free to take them to the narthex or the nursery to settle them down. The service can be seen and heard on TV in both locations. 2

Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. P: Our help is in the name of the Lord, C: who made heaven and earth. P: I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord, C: and You forgave the iniquity of my sin. God gathers His baptized people The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism. Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination. P: Almighty God, our Maker and Redeemer, we poor sinners confess unto You that we are by nature sinful and unclean and that we have sinned against You by thought, word, and deed. C: O most merciful God, who has given Your only-begotten Son to die for us, have mercy upon us and for His sake grant us remission of all our sins; and by Your Holy Spirit increase in us true knowledge of You and of Your will and true obedience to Your Word, to the end that by Your grace we may come to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. 4 P: Almighty God, our heavenly Father, has had mercy upon us and has given His only begotten Son to die for us and for Jesus sake He forgives us all our sins. To all who believe on His name He gives power to become the children of God and has promised them His Holy Spirit. He that believes and is baptized shall be saved. Grant this, Lord, unto us all. SAINT JAMES CHOIR: Our Joyful Declaration Hayes/Parker PRAYER OF THE DAY Sola Gratia By Grace Alone We often define grace as God s undeserved love for us. We were dead in our trespasses to begin with, but even though we were completely unable to do anything to get God to love us, He saved us by grace alone. FIRST SCRIPTURE LESSON: Ephesians 2: But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ by grace you have been saved 6 and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. 5 HYMN: A Mighty Fortress Is Our God stanza 2 2 With might of ours can naught be done, Soon were our loss effected; But for us fights the valiant One, Whom God Himself elected. Ask ye, Who is this? Jesus Christ it is, Of Sabaoth Lord, And there s none other God; He holds the field forever. SECOND SCRIPTURE LESSON: Romans 3: Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20 For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin. 21 But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. 26 It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. 27 Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28 For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law. Reading Response P: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God! Sola Fide By Faith Alone The Law of God condemns us all. Every mouth is silenced before God, because we have no excuse. However, the Law is not God s final word to us. The Gospel proclaims a righteousness from God, apart from law. That is why, together with the Apostle Paul and Martin Luther, we maintain that a man is justified by faith alone without the works of the Law. 6 Sola Scriptura By Scripture Alone The Bible is so much more than a book, because the Holy Scriptures are inspired by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Word and the Holy Spirit always go together. The Holy Scriptures make us wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. It is only in the Scriptures that we hear the good news that we are saved by grace alone through faith in Christ alone. THIRD SCRIPTURE LESSON: II Timothy 3: But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it 15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
