Good Friday March 25, 2016 PREPARING FOR WORSHIP You are invited to meditate on Paul Gerhardt s marvelous Lenten hymn, A Lamb Goes Uncomplaining Forth, Christian Worship #100 WELCOME to this commemoration of the Crucifixion or our Lord. As we contemplate what our sins have done to Jesus, our hearts are filled with grief and shame. But then we hear Him praying, Father, forgive them. That is why we call this day Good Friday. The Good News is: It is finished! Jesus paid for all of our sins. Jesus killed death. We take to heart the Apostle Paul s exhortation, Whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup you proclaim the Lord s death until He comes (I Corinthians 11:26). THE ORDER OF SERVICE ORGAN PRELUDE: Cortège et Litanie, Op. 19, No. 2 Marcel Dupré Marcel Dupré ( ) was one of the great virtuoso organists/composers/teachers of the early 20th century French organ school. Cortège et Litanie, engaging the full dynamic and coloristic range of the organ is built on two contrasting themes. The Cortège, evoking a solemn processional begins quietly featuring a chorale-like tune. The Litanie presents an insistent theme, a repetitious, anxious prayer sung during a procession, growing in complexity and intensity, until, joined by the reappearance of the Cortège theme, the piece concludes in a carillon-like blaze of triumph and hope. Earth can feel the pain and sorrow of that fateful day, but for Him and God's good grace, all our sins forgave. Jesus, Savior, loving Lord, forgiving from the cross, in your pain you spoke the words, believe and all's not lost. There You hung in agony, yet all could surely see God's own Son nailed to the cross, died to set us free. Crucified, crucified, Jesus, Savior, crucified, crowned with thorns entwined. Forsaken Son, so despised, His spirit resigned. Death's dark hour did cloud the earth, lightning filled the sky, thunder roared and earthquakes shook, on the day He died. Were you there? INTERCESSORY PRAYER AND THE LORD S PRAYER CONFESSION OF SINS I confess to God Almighty, before the whole company of heaven, and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have sinned in thought, word, and deed by my fault, by my own fault, by my own most grievous fault. I have done what is evil, and I have failed to do what is good. O Lord God most holy, O Lord God most mighty, O holy and most merciful Savior, I beg You to have mercy upon me, to forgive me all my sins and to bring me to everlasting life. Amen. ABSOLUTION P: Our heavenly Father has been merciful to us; He has given His only begotten Son to die for us. The blood of Jesus washes away all of your sins. Martin PRAYER OF PREPARATION FOR THE SACRAMENT P: Blessed Lord Jesus, You invite all of us who labor and are heavy laden to come unto You, so that You can refresh us and give rest to our souls. Please let us, as Your guests, experience Your love at the heavenly feast You have prepared for Your children here on earth. Keep us from impenitence and unbelief, so that we may partake of Your Holy Sacrament in a worthy manner. Strip off from us the spotted garments of our flesh and of our own righteousness and dress us in the garments of the righteousness that You have purchased with Your blood. Strengthen our faith, increase our love and hope, and after this life, grant us a place at Your heavenly table, where we will eat of the eternal manna and drink of the river of Your pleasure forevermore. Whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup you proclaim the Lord's death until He comes. Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding feast of the Lamb. 1) Lamb of God, have mercy on us, humbly trusting in Your grace. Our great joy is to adore You, and to see You face to face. 2) Jesus gives us true repentance by His Spirit sent from heav n, Whispers this assuring sentence, All your sins are now forgiv n. 3) Faith He grants us to believe it, grateful hearts His love to prize; Want we wisdom? He must give it, hearing ears and seeing eyes. Amen. 6

7 DISTRIBUTION OF THE LORD S SUPPER The Sacrament of the Altar is a special blessing for God s people: our sins are forgiven, our faith is strengthened, and our resolve to live for the Lord is renewed. We believe the word of Jesus that under the bread and the wine we receive the Real Presence of our Savior, His Body and His Blood, for the forgiveness of sins, life and salvation. All who are baptized and confirmed and confess this understanding of the Lord s Supper are welcome to receive the sacrament with us. We enjoy fellowship in a close communion with each other as we receive the Body and Blood of our Lord together. Visitors who wish to continue to commune with us on a regular basis, or those who have questions are encouraged to speak with one of the pastors. Non-alcoholic white wine is available in each tray for anyone who prefers it. Gluten-free wafers are also available. To indicate that you prefer gluten-free, please raise your index finger when the wafers are brought to you. Parents are welcome to bring their non-confirmed children with them to the altar. The pastor will pronounce a blessing on them. Parents should instruct such unconfirmed children not to stand on the cushions and to keep their hands folded, so the pastor will know who should not receive the sacrament. 8 THE TENEBRAE SERVICE The Latin word Tenebrae means "shadows" or "darkness." The custom of having a "Tenebrae Service" on Good Friday derives from the fact that God the Father modestly provided three hours of supernatural darkness to cover the anguish of His only begotten Son while He hung on the cross. As the lights in the sanctuary gradually grow dimmer, the Scripture readings and choral music will intensify our meditation on Jesus' suffering and death. We are reminded that the hopes and loyalties of His followers faded on that awful afternoon. As we look into our own hearts this evening, we ponder the question: Am I crucifying my Savior anew?
