Let all who hear Now to his temple draw near, Joining in glad adoration! MEN: Praise to the Lord, who o'er all things is wondrously reigning And, as on wings of an eagle, uplifting, sustaining. Have you not seen All that is needful has been Sent by his gracious ordaining? Opening President: I declare this Synodical Convention of Lutheran Church Canada open, in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Blessing President: May the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has called us and committed to us the gospel of His grace, increase your love for one another and all people. 3 THE INSTALLATION OF CONVENTION DELEGATES AND OFFICIAL OPENING OF THE 7TH CONVENTION OF LUTHERAN CHURCH CANADA (Voting and advisory delegates rise.) President: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Since you are to serve as representatives of the pastors, deacons, and congregations of the synod, as well as for its various boards, agencies and institutions, and so that your participation in this convention may be to the glory of God and serve as a blessing to His church, I ask you to hear this Word of God. In the 12 th chapter of St. Luke we read of Jesus speaking to His disciples: Be dressed, ready for service and keep your lamps burning, like men waiting for their master. Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master puts in charge of his servants to give them their food allowance at the proper time? It will be good for that servant whom the master finds doing so when he returns. In II Timothy, chapter 1, St. Paul writes, What you have heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus. Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you, guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us. I therefore ask you: Do you solemnly promise before God and this Christian assembly that, as delegates to this convention, you will be obedient to the Word of God and will faithfully uphold the confessions of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, so that in unity of faith and in fellowship of love the Church may grow into Him who is the head, Jesus Christ? Delegates: Yes, with the help of God. THE PRAYERS (The congregation rises for prayer.) President: Let us pray. Guide us, Lord, by your Holy Spirit, so that this Synodical convention may promote your work among us and build up your holy church. Lord, in your mercy: President: Direct all our discussion and debate, so that we may discern your will for us and make right decisions on the matters before us. Lord in your mercy: President: Keep our focus on your commands and promises to us, so that we may be bold in our mission to the people of this land. Lord, in your mercy: President: Make us ready to listen, slow to criticize, and willing to cooperate with each other, so that we may promote the unity which you have given us. Lord, in your mercy: ~9~ THE CONFESSION OF SINS P: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C: But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. P: Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C: Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways to the glory of your holy name. Amen. THE ABSOLUTION P: Almighty God in his mercy has given his Son to die for you and for his sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of the Word I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. THE LESSONS THE OLD TESTAMENT LESSON... Isaiah 42:1-9 Lector: Pres. Tom Prachar, Central District Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him and he will bring justice to the nations. He will not shout or cry out, or raise his voice in the streets. A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out. In faithfulness he will bring forth justice; he will not falter or be discouraged till he establishes justice on earth. In his law the islands will put their hope. This is what God the LORD says he who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and all that comes out of it, who gives breath to its people, and life to those who walk on it: I, the LORD, have called you in righteousness; I will take hold of your hand. I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people and a light for the Gentiles, to open eyes that are blind, to free captives from prison and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness. I am the LORD; that is my name! I will not give my glory to another or my praise to idols. See, the former things have taken place, and new things I declare; before they spring into being I announce them to you. THE EPISTLE LESSON...1 Corinthians 15:1-11 Lector: Pres. Don Schiemann, Alberta British Columbia District Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born. For I am the least of the apostles and do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me. Whether, then, it was I or they, this is what we preach, and this is what you believed. THE ALLELUIA VERSE + Alleluia. Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Alleluia, alleluia. THE GOSPEL LESSON... John 21:15-19 Lector: Pres. Al Maleske, East District P: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the 21 st chapter. C: Glory to you, O Lord. When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, Simon son of John, do you truly love me more than these? Yes, Lord, he said, you know that I love you. Jesus said, Feed my lambs. Again Jesus said, Simon son of John, do you truly love me? ~4~

6 He answered, Yes, Lord, you know that I love you. Jesus said, Take care of my sheep. The third time he said to him, Simon son of John, do you love me? Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, Do you love me? He said, Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you. Jesus said, Feed my sheep. I tell you the truth, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go. Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, Follow me! P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. THE HYMN OF THE DAY... Passing the Faith ~5~ THE NICENE CREED I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, The only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And he will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. ~6~
