3 From That Music Lady aka Gina Seashore, SVLC Minister of Music Worship at the Center... Upcoming Gospel Readings Apr. 7 John 12:1-8 Mary anoints Jesus Apr. 14 Luke 22:14--23:56 Passion/Palm Sunday Apr. 21 Luke 24:1-12 Resurrec6on Apr. 28 John 20:19-31 Risen Jesus Appears SVLC Choir at San Diego Sings Choir FesTval The SVLC Choir along with the Ramona Community Singers were featured in the San Diego Sings a choral fes6val, March 23rd at Balboa Park. Their presenta6on included three songs of hope including a rousing gospel version of How Can I Keep From Singing. We will never be able to go back to the slow, hymn version Twenty-one other choirs par6cipated in the daylong event which included a couple of mass choir pieces in which all 1000 voices sang together. It was the culmina6on of three months of prac6ce. I hope to have some videos posted soon in case you missed it. The fes6val was sponsored by the Choral Consor6um of San Diego - the SVLC Choir is a member choir. SVLC Choir Outreach The SVLC Choir is preparing to sing at a couple of local nursing/re6rement homes this spring. We are looking loca6ons with a piano please let me know if you can recommend a venue. ConfirmaTon Class Begins April 7 We re pleased to announce that Pastor Rick has started the ball rolling for Confirma6on Class at SVLC. He writes (to families who have children in middle school and high school) The Chris6an faith needs renewal and prac6ce. As Lutheran Chris6ans we receive that gik of faith through bap6sm and most oken that bap6sm is as infants. To make the next step of faith the Lutheran church offers Confirma6on for youth who are discovering what the gik of bap6sm offers. We now call confirma6on "the reaffirma6on of bap6sm" and as Shepherd of the Valley's bridge pastor I would like to start a confirma6on experience through a classroom experience and a Lutheran camping or retreat experience. For me, the classroom teaches our head and the retreats and camps teach our heart. Both are necessary for the faith to become a vital and living part of our lives. The church will offer a 2 year program of confirma6on for middle school youth and a 1 year program for high school youth. Aker an ini6al planning mee6ng, it was decided that classes will take place on Sunday mornings between services, from 9:30-10:15. A,endance at Luther Glen or LRCC Beach camp will also be part of the SVLC program. Our SVLC budget supports all fees beyond $50 per student. Bible Study at SVLC The Gather Bible Study group will meet at SVLC this month at 10am on Tuesday, April 30. Everyone is welcome The Monday evening Bible Study (6pm at SVLC) will con6nue to meet during Lent, studying the readings and Gospel for the Sunday to come. The Centering Prayer group at SVLC meets every Friday from 9am -10am, for prayer 6me and discussion, u6lizing different resources from the library at Contempla6ve Outreach San Diego. Contact the church office for more informa6on.
4 News From The Closet on 54th Gree6ngs Everyone Even with all the rain, we had a quite a busy month. For March, we handed out 1,634 clothing items, shoes and accessories to 171 people The new rule of allowing people to check out items for one person at a 6me as long as there is a line seems to have been well-received. No problems. Dona6ons started picking up so we will not be reducing limits for now. Thanks to everyone who helped this month. The April open and sor6ng days and hours are as follows: OPEN: April 3, April 10, April 17 from 11am - 2pm SORTING: April 9, April 16, and April 23beginning at 10:30am. Generally, we will not sort on the first Tuesday of the month. If anyone wants to help either when we're open or sor6ng and would like more informa6on, see the sign up sheet at SVLC or contact Leslie Atkins la.atkins23@gmail.com If you haven't already, please like us on Facebook: h,ps:// SVLC will have our own congrega6onal semi-finals at the Lenten supper on Wed. April 3, Sign up to bring your best recipes. Serving and Sharing Common Ground News Once again we will pack food boxes on Wednesday, April 10, beginning at 3:30pm at the Good Shepherd Ministry Center, 772 South Johnson Ave. El Cajon These are distributed to families within the La Mesa Spring Valley School District elementary schools we serve: Highlands, Casa de Oro, Avondale, Bancrok, and Kempton. Many of the children already par6cipate in the free or reduced breakfast/lunch program, and some6mes that is the only food they receive during the day. Our goal for the boxes we pack and distribute right before spring break is to sustain the en6re family for that week. For many years, we have packed and distributed over 100 boxes each 6me. The boxes are delivered to the schools for families in need, and some boxes are sent to the district office so they can be given to the families of children who are homeless. In the past, we have asked for dona6ons of peanut bu,er, tuna, and other items that can be easily boxed. Last year, we tried something new and partnered with Feeding San Diego for many of those items that members of our congrega6on, Foothills UMC, and Santa Sophia Catholic Church have donated in the past. This worked out well since the cost of the items was significantly less than we would pay at any store in the community. Other items (tor6llas, bread, cheese, eggs, produce, fresh fruit, and milk) are donated or purchased at a much reduced price from local merchants. Two stores in our neighborhood that you might be familiar with are Grocery Outlet and Valley Farm Market. But, even with the reduced pricing, we s6ll have to pay something for the food. The cost of each box of food is about $35 and each box contains approximately 32 pounds of food, plus milk. That s a total of 3520 pounds (1.75 tons) of food given directly to those who need it. Place your dona6on in the display box in the narthex or add to your offering (Put the amount and Common Ground in the memo line or write on your envelope, or go online and use the Addi6onal Dona6ons box) Thanks to those who have already contributed, and in advance for those to come SVLC Chili Cookoff to decide who will represent, will be at the Lenten potluck supper on April 3. Common Ground is an ecumenical ministry of three area churches (SVLC, Foothills Methodist and Santa Sophia Catholic) that serves teachers and families in need at our local elementary schools. Please let Shaunda Jacobson or Jenny Fenner know if you are interested in helping in any capacity.
5 Bowen Barn DedicaTon he Heart of the Farm campaign con6nues on April 7, Luther Glen Farm is hos6ng the Bowen Barn dedica6on, celebra6on and banquet The event is from 4:00 pm-7:00 pm, and begins with barn tours, animal interac6ons and appe6zers. AMMPARO Update From Pastor Nate at Clairemont Lutheran: What we have coming up is a special 6me where we will invite others to get to learn more about AMMPARO at the upcoming Synod Assembly in May. Also we will be invi6ng people there to come down with us again to Tijuana to visit the shelters on June 7th for another half-day trip... If there are any groups interested, we are going to go down for a brief mission trip June 31st to July 2nd where we will sleep at Casa del Migrante and also work with the children at Madre Asunta. What can we do now to help (from the ELCA AMMPARO website): Pray for the safety of migrant children and families on the journey and for jus6ce as they reach their des6na6ons. Become a Welcoming Congrega6on to accompany these children and families through their transi6on to life in the U.S. Link to resource. Advocate for jus6ce for migrant children and families. Accompany migrant children and families through the Guardian Angel Program as the physical presence of the church in the courtroom. h,ps://vimeo.com/ Give to AMMPARO to provide opportuni6es for children and families in Central America and in the U.S. h,ps://community.elca.org/dona6ons/ammparo-donate LRCC Summer Camp 2019: Heroes of Faith This summer at your Southern California Lutheran camps, our theme will be 'Heroes of Faith, - an explora6on into the women and men in the Bible who were models of courage, faith and love Our theme verse is Joshua 1:9, This is my command be strong and courageous Do not be afraid or discouraged.
