Couples must attend designated Marriage Preparation Courses. Couples must meet with the parish priest before a wedding date can be scheduled. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Jesus called us to evangelize (spread the good news) and our religious ed and RCIA programs allow our parish to provide this essential service to our community. These programs help prepare children and adults to become Faithful Practicing Catholics through learning the essential tenements of our faith. SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM First and Third Sundays of each month. Arrangements must be made by contacting the Rectory. Godparents are required to be practicing Catholics, attending Mass regularly. 1 st time parents must meet with a priest for instruction. All paperwork and payment (including sponsor certificates) are due at least 1 full week before the baptism.

CAPODANNO BIKE BLESSING The 5 th Annual Bike Blessing and Father Capodanno Memorial Mass will take place on Sunday, September 2 th at The Father Capodanno Chapel in Ft. Wadsworth, SI, NY We will gather at the Midland Beach Parking Lot (Lincoln Ave. and Fr. Capodanno Blvd.,10306) at 8 AM for Coffee & Donuts with Registration beginning at 8:45 AM and 9:30 AM Mass at The Chapel (Rain or Shine). The $20 per bike donation entitles you to Lunch following the ceremony after Mass. This ride supports the Father Capodanno Statue Fund which honors the Medal of Honor recipient, who died in the Vietnam War. 3 CYO NEWS: BASKETBALL The 2018/2019 basketball season is coming. Registration for the Holy Family Cardinals Basketball Season will take place on the following dates: *Thursday Sept. 6, pm *Wednesday Sept. 12, pm *Friday Sept. 14, pm *Saturday Sept. 15, am-2pm -Registration will take place for CYO basketball, Saturday basketball clinic and Friday Intramural league. Registration will take place in the Msgr. Glynn Community Center (HF Gym). -Applications will be available at registration. Separate applications must be filled out for each child. -There will be a $25.00 LATE FEE for anyone who registers after Sept. 15 th. -For information on the programs we offer and the prices please pick up an Information Sheet available in the church vestibule. BOWLING The 2018 Fall Season of CYO SI Bowling will begin on Monday September 24 th. There are 4 divisions: K thru 2, 3/4, 5/6 and 7/8. We ask that our clothing respect the dignity and decorum of a house of worship, remembering that we are coming to God s house. Or, in other words, we like seeing you at Mass - just not so much of you. Closing the Doors With the warmer weather our air conditioning costs rise and we kindly ask all of our parishioners to help us. Please do not presume the person behind you will close the door. We try very hard to keep our expenses down, and making sure the doors are kept closed is a great way to not throw your money out the window, (or door). Thank you! Theology on Tap The Archdiocese has started a Theology On Tap series on Staten Island for young adults ages 21-39! Theology On Tap is a program that invites different speakers to talk about different aspects of our Catholic faith in a relaxed setting. It will be at the Flagship Brewery, 40 Minthorne St., tomorrow Monday, August 20 th. The bar will be open for us at 7:00 PM to meet, and the discussion is from 7:30 PM-9:30 PM. We will have the Flagship Brewery entirely to ourselves, so bring friends and coworkers, and come excited for a great talk while sipping on a fantastic brew in a cozy atmosphere! The archdiocese will be providing pizza, so please RSVP to MaryElise.Zellmer@archny.org. RCIA We are beginning the process of recruiting individuals for our next RCIA program of Classes will be held every Thursday night from 7:00-8:30 PM starting September 20 th through Easter. If the redemptive work of Christ is all sufficient, why do Catholics insist on various good works and penances? Fundamentalists think that because Catholics teach salvation depends on faith and good works, Catholics must not believe the redemptive work of Christ is sufficient. They see good works, penances, Purgatory, prayer to the saints, and the sacraments, as unnecessary additions to the completed work of Christ. Fundamentalists have this notion because they confuse salvation with redemption. Catholics firmly agree with Protestants that the redemptive work of Christ is complete and all-sufficient. Through His suffering, death, and resurrection, Jesus redeemed everyone: He paid for all sins and made it possible for anyone to be saved. However, we know that not everyone is automatically saved. All Christians admit that people can fail to be saved by refusing to repent, or by refusing to cooperate with God's grace in others areas. Although the redemptive work of Christ is complete, the merits of His redemption must still be applied to each person in order for him to be saved. Thus, a person must repent (Mt 4:17), believe in Jesus (Acts 16:31), keep the commandments (Mt 19:16-17), and live a life of charity (1 Cor 13:1-3), as Scripture plainly teaches. A Catholic who performs good works in Christ isn't denying the completed work of Christ's redemption; he is depending on it. 9. Can you lose your salvation once you accept Jesus as Lord and Savior? Most, though not all, Fundamentalists believe that once you accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior, it is impossible to lose your salvation. This doctrine is known as "once saved, always saved." Like many other Protestant doctrines, this teaching was unheard of before the Reformation. Mt 24:13 tells us that we must "persevere to the end" in order to be saved. St. Paul says the same thing in Tim 2:12: that we must hold out to the end if we want to reign with Christ. In Rom 11:22, Christians are warned that they will be cut off if they don't persevere in the kindness of God. Hebrews 6:4-6 describes people who are sharers in the Holy Spirit (born -again Christians) but then fall away from God. Remember St. Paul's advice: "work out your salvation with fear and trembling" (Phil 2:12). Who should have more assurance of salvation than St. Paul? Yet he says: "I drive my body and train it, for fear that, after having preached to others, I myself should be disqualified' (1 Cor 9:27). Scripture is very clear: Christians can lose their salvation. The Catholic Church teaches we must die in sanctifying grace in order to be saved. Any mortal sin leads to a loss of sanctifying grace and the risk of eternal damnation if we should die in this state.
