7 May 10, 2015 The Sixth Sunday of Easter r s Day Offering North Carolina Baptist Hospital Mother s Day Offering er s Da Week of Prayer God s Love Is Always with Us God s Love Is Always with Us When the symptoms Betsy Simpson thought were just another urinary tract infection revealed endometrial cancer, she went straight to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center... and fell through the cracks. I thought I had good insurance, but I found out they weren t going to cover anything, she explained. She even considered delaying treatment for six months until she turned 65 and would be covered by Medicare. Betsy, widowed young and no stranger to challenges, did what came naturally. I put it in His hands. I said, Lord you ll get me through this. And God did. Today, she s cancer-free and worry-free: her hospital bills were paid through the generosity of N.C. Baptists and the Mother s Day Offering. God s love is always around us, she said. This is love I can reach out and touch. Baptists are loving and giving people. If you can be that person too, that would be wonderful. Our Prayers Were Answered Ingathering Today

13 May 17, 2015 The Seventh Sunday of Easter From the Pastor Your Diaconate and Stewardship Team took action on a matter last month that they never anticipated having to do make a reduction in our 2015 budget less than four months into our new year. I don t mean a minor reduction either. It was major adjustment both in size and scope, amounting to just under $203,000, reducing our budget from $1,970,673 to $1,768,003. Our budget receipts for the last four years, coming off the effects of the Great Recession and coupled with the deaths and geographic relocations of a number of Oakmont members, have plateaued around $1,750,000. When we ended the first quarter approximately $113,000 behind what our budget called for at that point, our Deacons and Stewardship Team experienced understandable concern. These leaders made the difficult, yet responsible, decision to move our budget temporarily more in line with our giving. You can review those reductions on the next page. They include reducing anticipated expenditures in personnel, missions, capital improvements, and ministry-related areas, as well as using some designated funds to service our mortgage on the new building now called Branches at My observations about our budget challenge include: This challenge is more ministry than budgetary in nature rooted in our spiritual life together. Giving that springs both from obedience and gratefulness is a major tenet of the good news of Jesus. Our giving indeed is a spiritual discipline, or habit. I hope you do not give to your church budget alone, but to your Lord who uses our funds to do His work in the world. We are making a difference in people s lives inside the Oakmont walls, as well as in our community and world. When you make a financial gift to your church s ministry, you can trust that the money is spent wisely and with an outward focus directed toward reaching, serving, and growing others in Christ s name. A significant portion of the expenses contained within our budget provide the infrastructure that makes possible the ministry we all value. It is a privilege to open our facilities for, to name a few, the twice-monthly medical clinic, tutoring or literacy for children on Monday or Tuesday, youth ministry activities on Wednesdays and Sundays, and worship and Sunday School on a weekly basis. It s easy to forget, though, that paying the utility or insurance bills, repairing the leaking toilet, continued inside

14 continued from front page replacing the rotting wood windows (that work is currently happening), paying an adult volunteer s way to a youth camp or staff salaries all makes possible the church ministry we have come to appreciate. Oakmont s 42 charter members began our church 51 years ago with tithing (returning to God 10 percent of our income) as one of their core commitments. Who Oakmont is today, to a great extent, goes back to their biblical emphasis and commitment to generous giving, of which we are the grateful beneficiaries. I would like to challenge you to follow their example if you are not already. I believe that you love your church and value the ministries that we have embraced, which we often share through our faith stories in worship. I am likewise confident that, upon sharing these financial realities, you will respond generously. Our Deacons and Stewardship Team would find no greater joy than eventually restoring these reductions so that our missional focus can be retained and sustained, not minimized as is currently the case. So offer a financial gift as an act of gratitude to God. Make an additional grace gift if you are already tithing. Covenant with God that you will increase your gifts by one percent annually as you work toward the tithe. Let s create a joyful place of worship, study, and service characterized by abundant giving at this place we all love and celebrate called Oakmont. 19 May 24, 2015 The Day of Pentecost Leader: The day of Pentecost has come, and we are together. Will the works of God be known among us today? People: We live in the valley of dry bones. Around and within us is emptiness. Leader: God comes to us as a gentle breath or violent wind. Catch your breath, God s breath, and live. People: There are stirrings deep within that give us hope. There is a Spirit linking us to one another. Leader: All: The fires of love dispel life s shadows. God s Spirit comes to give us new life. Surely God is in this place! May the glory of God be known among us today!

25 May 31, 2015 Trinity Sunday Trinity Sunday Leader: People: Leader: People: Leader: People: Leader: All: God our Creator, we call You Holy Father, Author of Life. Draw us closer to You, O God. Christ our Savior, we call You the Son, the Messiah, the One who Saves. Draw us closer to You, O God. Holy Spirit, we call You the Advocate, the Inspirer, Breath and Wind of God. Draw us closer to You, O God. Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty; heaven and earth are full of Your glory. Draw us closer to You, O God. Draw us in, Spirit, Christ, and Creator, that we might journey with You more fully and deeply, in this life and beyond. Amen.

26 Your Diaconate and Stewardship Team took action on a matter last month that they never anticipated having to do make a reduction in our 2015 budget less than four months into our new year. Giving that springs both from We are making a difference in people s lives inside the Oakmont walls, as well as in our community and world. It s easy to forget, though, that paying the utility or insurance bills, repairing the leaking toilet, replacing the rotting wood windows (that work is currently happening), paying an adult volunteer s way to a youth camp or staff salaries all makes possible the church ministry we have come to appreciate. Oakmont Community Center Minister... $42,719 Missions...$25,000 Building Capital Improvements... $25,000 Mortgage Payment...$45,000 Reduction in Ministry Areas at 30% of $216, $64,951 (Christian Education, Music, and other Supportive Ministries) From the Pastor obedience and gratefulness is Oakmont s 42 charter mem- a major tenet of the good news of Jesus. Our giving indeed is a spiritual discipline, or habit. I hope you do not give to your church budget alone, but to your Lord who uses our funds to do His work in the world. bers began our church 51 years ago with tithing (returning to God 10 percent of our income) as one of their core commitments.
