1 SharingSpace Weekly Newsletter of New Beginnings UMC December 23-30th, 2018 This Week s Activities Clear a Path Sunday 12/23 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth Luke 1:26 Traditional Worship Sunday School College Connections Contemporary Worship Service Our Scripture lesson from this past Sunday began with the above verse, which describes the divine direction given to Gabriel to travel to the small town of Nazareth so that he might deliver a message to Mary. Our Scripture lesson from Sunday presented us with the second instance of god directing Gabriel to deliver a message - the first instance being Gabriel s exchange with Zechariah (Luke 1:5ff) Monday 12/24 The attention placed upon the messages of Gabriel and the response to these messages by Zechariah and Mary have been the focus of our sermons; but, our sermons have not given us the opportunity to consider the angelic presence Gabriel offers in this narrative. Thursday 12/27 Gabriel is an angel of the Lord - stemming from the greek root aggelos or angelos. An angel is a messenger of God, which is precisely what we observe with Gabriel. God has sent Gabriel to deliver a message to Zechariah and Mary. I m not sure if it is Luke s account or our traditional understanding of Gabriel, but the presence of this angelic figure suggests a sense of bravado or regality. But, I m not certain God s messengers are so easily identifiable There was a young man in our former town, who was well known in the community. You might say he was a local personality. This young man was not able to be employed, so he served the town by sweeping the sidewalks along the main street. I remember one particular day, when I has walked up town for a cup of coffee. The young man was walking along the sidewalks in his usual fashion. Only it was Christmas time, and the young man was wearing a Santa Clause cap. As he walked the sidewalks sweeping a path for people to walk along, he was singing a familiar chorus, Santa Claus is coming to town Santa Clause is coming to town Christmas Eve Candlelight Service Tuesday 12/25 Wednesday 12/26 9:00 8:00 9:00 Church Office open 9am-Noon Morning Prayer Group Church Office Open 9am-Noon Friday 12/28 Sunday 12/30 Traditional Worship Sunday School College Connections Contemporary Worship Service KidLink AM New Years Celebration Monday 12/31 10:00 Women s Class Meeting Group 1 Tuesday 1/1 Wednesday 1/2 5:30 6:30 7:00 Women s Class Meeting Group 4 Praise Band Practice Servant Stitchers Choir Practice Thursday 1/3 8:00 1:00 7:00 Morning Prayer Group Women s Conference Meeting Cub Scout Leader Meeting Friday 1/4 Continued on page 2 Boy Scout Lock-In
2 continued from page 1 I remember thinking about the joy in the young man s voice as he sung out the announcement of an anticipated arrival. His message was accurate there was joy for all of us in the anticipation of one s arrival And, as this young man cleared a path as he announced the arrival of the one long-awaited, I realized God s messengers are not always predictable. Yet, Good still sends his angels among us. There is cause for Joy this Christmas season. The one long awaited is coming, so clear a path, and be made ready to receive him!
