MINISTRY UPDATES Q1, 2017 Purpose: Richview Baptist Church exists to glorify God by making disciples. We do this through: Worship Evangelism Discipleship Demonstrating our love by meeting the needs of others, particularly believers Ministry/Prime Update (Jan, Feb, Mary, 2017) Children/Kids Community Groups Jonathan Clarke Food Bank Jr. High Jon Dotson, Paul Payne We saw Rebecca Richards transition out of her role as Kids Director to pursue schooling and other disciplines. Thank you for your 3+ years of service. We are pursuing a half-time children s director. Our programs are continuing with the help of our leaders We currently have 10 community groups with almost 100 people; we praise God for this. Groups are currently studying the book of Mark. When this is done, there will be 2 studies on Crucial Conversations. Then we will begin a 5-week series on BELLS, which is a practical evangelism series in which we hope to learn daily habits that will make us ready to share our faith naturally. We ve been able to provide our guests with a wide selection of foods from both Daily Bread and a couple of other churches with little storage capacity for food goods. One of our greatest resources are the Volunteers and financial contributors from the community, the Richview Residences, church attendees and members. Thank you for your ongoing support. It makes it possible to provide additional staples as needed.. Our Monthly Hymn Sing (3rd Sunday 6:00-7:00) enjoys people attending to sing praises to God. Some people from the church have been joining those from Residence. If you re interested in attending it s held in 105 Clement (next door) on the main floor just off the foyer in the Theatre Room. One of our ministry team will be at the door to let you in. We held a special Easter Celebration in Scripture & Hymns in April. It was well received with about people attending in the Kipling Lounge of Richview Residence. Who would have thought that all the outdoor rinks would be puddles in the middle of Canadian winter? The change of plans for the Skate and Plate however caused significantly less distress for the youth than it did for the youth director. From feasting to a full out three-team tournament, a good time was had by all. As for the Lock-In, it was tough deciding their favourite part. The pizza & pop? The movies, Doritos & popcorn? The Nerf gun youth hunt? The milkshakes? The gourmet breakfast? Or the veggie sticks Special thanks to Mark & Davika for getting up early to feed the horde. If you are in grade 6-8 don t miss out! Join us on Tuesdays from Richview.
Jonathan Dotson Sr. High New years skating at Nathan Philip s Square proved problematic on account of rain. Challenge accepted! We found an indoor rink to skate, conveniently located next to a Harvey s, which also gave us time to catch Moana at Rainbow cinemas. A group of us went to Today s Teen Conference and not only had the chance to celebrate a birthday, but also to learn and grow in our faith. On March 3rd 5th we ditched the city and headed to Riverview Bible Camp for a winter retreat. Special thanks go out to; our guest speaker Tim G. for his powerful message about identity and living for Christ; to Jessey, Lisa, Ziko, Makena, Rebecca R, and Cici W for their help in the kitchen; & lastly to Sean & Kate for leading the worship music, you guys rock! (Just Older Youth) Cheri Arthurs Diane Sawicki JOY Fellowship Library Ladies Prayer Breakfast & Women Praying Together If you are in high school, come and join us at Enroute on Thursdays from Richview. Another great success, praise God. For the last three events, we have sold out 2 weeks BEFORE the event! Our chef Carole Plevin has a special talent for creating marvelous, interesting and extraordinary tasty meals. Heath Peat make the room warm and friendly with her table setting and gift packages. I want to thank Jonathan Clarke for his faithfulness in setting the room up and then taking it down. Many volunteers from the church family help each month, both in the preparations on Friday and the Saturday Luncheon. There are too many to list but thank God for you. Laurie Atkins presented the Easter story in word & song from Mary, the mother of Jesus. It gave all of us a mother s prospective on surrendering her child to God purpose. Nancy continues to computerize our book collection. The Fiction is done, and the Children's section are almost all done. Next will be the Non- Fiction. Lora Klatt assisted in reorganizing a large portion of our nonfiction books so topics are easier to locate. Beginning in the middle of March, the library opened Tuesday afternoons to the Residence. So far this has proved a success. Thank you to Betty Cowan and Heather Peat for volunteering to lead this initiative. We've had a number new DVDs added to our collection over the past 3 months, including seasons 1, 2 & 3 of Veggie Tales and a number of DVDs for adults. We're also looking to add some newer books to our collection and replace some of the older ones We had our Valentine's breakfast on Sat. Feb. 11th with 20 ladies in attendance. Our tables were beautifully decorated in red and white, also with cinnamon hearts, chocolate roses, and cards with a Bible verse about how much God loves us. Sylvia challenged the ladies not to give up on writing hand written "love letters" and "encouragement cards", for these can be keepers and looked at again in the future. We sang some songs about God's love alongside with video projection. Thanks to Vince, Pam, and Josie who shared the love of God with us by helping prepare our delicious breakfast (sausages, pancakes, scrambled eggs, muffins, scones, fruit toast, yogurt, coffee, tea and juice...a great deal for only $5.00). Thanks be to God for His Love Letter to us, the BIBLE. Many thanks to Inez and Sylvia who planned and prepared for this event The next 2 dates are Sat. April 8th, and Sat. June 10th.
Bob Dormer Interim: Residence Foundation Missions The Foundation continues to supply affordable housing to seniors. This quarter ended with our Annual General Meeting (AGM) on March 30, Dennis Harris from the Etobicoke Historical Society gave a presentation on the history of the Richview community that was located at Richview Side Road (now Eglinton) and Highway 27 A meeting with the RBC property committee representatives met with a RBF representative to review the hydro invoicing. Everyone was satisfied with the results of the meetings. RBF billings to RBC were correct, and the presentations have been updated to explain in more detail. Bob Steffler, City of Toronto, our advisor for many years, attended our Board meeting on January 24, 2017, informing us of his planned retirement in May of this year and updated the Board on social housing changes. He offered wisdom for the future to the Board. On February 1, 2017, the last cheque was issued for the Clement mortgage. A staff/board celebration was held on February 13, Special guest was Pastor Gordon Freeland who gave his thoughts on the planning and construction of Clement Building. Anyone 59 or over and thinking of moving, or just interested in a tour of the Richview Residence, tours are given the last Monday of each month. Contact the Richview Residence office at to book your tour spot. We have been working with Nicaragua Team to assist with them being known to congregation and with preparation for August trip. We were able to partner with Ruth and IVCF with providing for pizza parties in March. Are planning to continue those efforts. Both Ruth and Dave Cook have done monthly missions moments. Kathy Clarke Jonathan Clarke Mom s Arise Senior s Bible Study Audio/Visual We followed the same format - dinner & teaching or bible study or fun night. We have 6 Moms attending consistently with 10 kids. We continue to have wonderful help in the kitchen and a lot of the Moms especially love the food! We have taught on procrastination, Parenting and Hard & Easy (Discipline). We continue to do our bible study on "Breaking free from Fear" and the last lesson facilitated by Linda Nolan was on the fear of death and it presented the gospel in a powerful way. We have had 3 fun nights coloring, card making & cookie decorating. We continue to love on these Moms and their children and have had many opportunities to speak into their lives. We began studying the book of Romans in January. This has been a difficult study as there is a lot of heavy theology. We have reached Romans 8 thankfully and are happy that, There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. We are always open and would love to new people come and join us.. The Audio-Visual Team is pleased with the new speakers and how they have improved the sound quality in the auditorium and are continuing to pursue other ways to improve it more. The A/V Team welcomed Leila Boyachek as a projectionist, and the Music Team welcomed Jill Bond as a pianist.
Worship Lori McMurray Hospitality We have been preparing through the winter season for Easter but presenting a play entitled: Who Killed Jesus?. The Easter season will be a full time with Passover Seder, Drama Production and Easter Sunday. Benevolence & Visitation Rick Lynd & Pastor Joe Pastor We began 2017 by celebrating a Love Feast on January 1. We enjoyed eating together, thanked God for things that He is doing in our lives, and praised Him. Throughout 2017, we will be studying the book of Mark. January brought a sermon series about several of the major characters in the book of Mark, their flaws and where redemption lies. The February series was about Crucial Conversations we need to have, and how to include Jesus and follow His example as we do so. During the Real Jesus series in March, we discovered who Jesus really is and what a difference that makes for us. March also brought the beginning of Lent and we began preparing for Easter. We added a creative element to each Sunday morning service that helped us to respond to the story of Jesus and His sacrifice for us. Also each week, an interactive prayer station was added at the back of the auditorium and people were encouraged to pray though the events of the week that turned the world upside down. Throughout these three months, we heard from a number of people about how God is at work - from Iain Davies (our intern from Tyndale), from one of our missionaries Ruth Sangalang and also Tales of Wonder from Carol Wilson and Jeff Wallace. We also celebrated the gift of Lucy Bond, as Jill and Stephen dedicated themselves as her parents. Please pray that God would continue to guide the Worship Team as we strive to provide opportunities for people to meet Jesus and to worship Him wholeheartedly. We have been praying and looking for a new First Impressions coordinator and have approached someone to consider the role. Monthly on 2nd Sunday s we have offered Newcomer Receptions for anyone new we are able to connect with. We continue to offer coffee and tea an hour before the service and it continues right through the foodbank time. Helene Farrell is a constant in taking care of all condiments. and Doreen Dennis continue to provide daily reception assistance and moving everything to a digital system. Several other ladies from the residence provide tremendous support in bulletin folding, collating, data entry and any tasks that need to happen. We are awaiting new photo directory. We continue to assist several people and families throughout the week who are living in shelters and dire circumstances with as much shepherding, and resources as we can muster. Several people in-and-out of the hospital and a few dealing with cancer and painful conditions. We do our best to meet regularly with those who find it difficult to attend. We saw Rebecca Richards transition out of her role as Kids Director to pursue schooling and other disciplines. Very thankful for her 3+ years of service. We are pursuing a half-time children s director. Bradley Redlich is providing 5 hours of custodial work prior to Sunday morning services and following foodbank.
Pastor & Pastor Jonathan Clarke Inez Cann T. Dot Discipleship Praise Moves Continues to meet 1 st Sunday evenings of the Month for leadership development. This years focus is on the Life of Christ and establishing a strong NT Biblical Foundation and Theological Foundation. We have 24 women registered in PraiseMoves this quarter. The class themes included Praising God for His love for us, love for each other and during Lent, preparing our hearts for Easter. Most of the participants regularly attend nearby churches. Not only do they appreciate the exercise, they say they love hearing and meditating on God s Word, spoken while they exercise. A few of the women joined us at the Seder dinner and joined our Easter celebrations.
