Jeanne Martie, Liturgist THE FIRST SCRIPTURE LESSON: Acts 1: Jeanne Martie, Liturgist In the first book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus did and taught from the beginning until the day when he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. After his suffering he presented himself alive to them by many convincing proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. While staying with them, he ordered them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for the promise of the Father. This, he said, is what you have heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now. So when they had come together, they asked him, Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel? THE CHORAL ANTHEM: Walk Worthy... Dr. Jody Moore Jesus replied, It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. While he was going and they were gazing up toward heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. They said, Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up toward heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven. So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us one of these must become a witness with us to his resurrection. So they proposed two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also known as Justus, and Matthias. Then they prayed and said, Lord, you know everyone s heart. Show us which one of these two you have chosen to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place. And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias; and he was added to the eleven apostles. LEADER: This is the Word of the Lord. PEOPLE: Thanks be to God THE SERMON: Onto the Next Phase.... A Declaration of Faith Ch. 5.4 The Spirit helps believers grow in the new life. The Christian fellowship was not a society of perfect people. The struggle between the old way of life and the new was severe. Yet the Spirit produced among the followers of Jesus love, joy, peace, and victories in the battle against evil. We believe the Holy Spirit works today whenever believers grow toward maturity in Christ. As long as we live we struggle with sin, but the Spirit s presence assures us God will complete what the Lord has begun in us.

4 THE LITANY AND PRAYERS FOR ASCENSION SUNDAY ONE: Arise, O Lord, in your strength. ALL: We will praise you for your glory! ONE: Let us pray with joy to Christ at the right hand of God, saying: You are the king of glory! You have raised the weakness of our flesh. Heal us from our sins, and restore to us the full dignity of life. ONE: May our faith lead us to the Father as we follow the road you trod. ONE: You have promised to draw all people to yourself; let no one of us be separate from your body. ONE: Grant that by our longing we may join you in your kingdom where your humanity and ours is glorified. 5 News Around Outer Banks Presbyterian Church! Third Thursday Luncheon Ann and Dan Broadhead are the new coordinators of the Third Thursday Luncheons and, by popular demand, there will be a lunch this Thursday, May 17 th! It will take place at Players Grill at Nags Head Golf Links at Noon. We would love to have a great turnout. All are invited and you are welcome to bring a friend! Please call or Ann and Dan to make your reservation no later than 10:00 am this Monday, May 14 th, at kittyhawklife@gmail.com or by calling (Please leave a message.) Players Grill is located at 5615 S. Seachase Dr., which is in The Village at Nags Head. Afternoon Tea On Saturday, May 19th from 3pm-5pm, the circles of OBPC will meet at the church for an afternoon tea featuring a summary of the year s Bible Study on Hebrews, a celebration and dedication service of the Birthday Offering and, of course, an afternoon tea menu. This will be the last time women of OBPC will have a chance to gather together before August. Every woman 18 years of age and up is invited! You do not have to belong to a circle. Come have fun at our birthday/tea party. Youth Group Fundraiser Cookout Please plan to join us at the church on May 20 th at 5:00 pm for a cookout to raise funds for our youth to attend Montreat Youth Conference this summer. The cookout will include hot dogs, hamburgers, side dishes, desserts, and drinks. The youth will be selling tickets in advance this Sunday and next after church. Tickets are $10/person or $20/family. This is a great opportunity for fellowship and to support our youth! Calling All Graduates Each year in June we set aside a special time in our service to recognize our high school and college graduates! This year's Graduate Recognition Ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, June 10. If you know a graduating senior who would like to be included in this ceremony, please contact the church office no later than Monday, May 14. Pastor s Bible Study The Rev. Dr. Jody Moore is teaching a Tuesday evening Bible Study that began on April 24 th and will continue until May 22 nd at 5:15 pm in the Fellowship Hall. Most of the lessons will come from the book of Acts, which tells the story of the early church. You are invited to come any week that you are able. We will be studying together on Tuesday the same passage that will be preached on the following Sunday. Here is the remaining schedule: May 15 at 5:15 pm: Acts 2:1-21 and May 22 at 5:15 pm: Proverbs 8 Children s Church Teachers Needed Will you consider giving up one Sunday a month to assist in Children s Church? We are currently in need of volunteers to fill vacant spots on our rotation. Our children enjoy music videos, Bible stories and discussions, games, snack and hands-on experiments. All materials and lessons are provided. Please see Hollie to volunteer, or come visit us one Sunday to see how much fun we have! Vacation Bible School 2018 Vacation Bible School will be the week of July 16-20, We need your help to make VBS the best week of the summer! Please pray about how God would use you to impact the children in our community. A sign-up sheet is located in the gathering space. Please see Hollie for more information. Next Sunday is Pentecost! May 20 is Pentecost Sunday. Considered the birthday of the church, we will have cake during the fellowship time after worship. We invite everyone to wear something red, which represents tongues of fire and the power of the Holy Spirit. A Pentecost special offering will be taken to benefit programs for children, youth, and young adults. Sixty percent of funds collected go to the larger church for programs to help young people develop tools to be Christian leaders. Forty percent of the offering will go to the Dare County Friends of Youth, a local mentoring program for at-risk youth between the ages of 6-17.

The Eastern Carolina Concert Society will present Barry Ambrose, Steve Blackstock, Jason Evans, Tommy Midgett, and Tim Price in a Keyboard Extravaganza set in the sanctuary of Duck United Methodist Church with its beautiful, natural views as a backdrop. ECCS, a 501(c)(3) organization, sponsors free concerts to highlight local talent; donations are welcomed. Become a Patron with an annual contribution of $25 or more. This concert will be followed by a reception to honor our patrons.
