Jesus (Matthew 7:24-25) Everybody who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise builder who built a house on bedrock the wind blew and beat against that house. It didn t fall because it was firmly set on bedrock. Anne Lamott You can safely assume that you ve created God in your own image when it turns out that God hates all the same people you do. For many there is a sense of anxiousness concerning the life of the church, especially as it pertains to the upcoming denominational vote at the Special Session of General Conference February 23 rd -26 th. Sadly, in the midst of all the fear, doubt, and anxiety the church has lost its focus. There s been a lot of misinformation, assumption, and hand-wringing over the issue of human sexuality and the church and yet there hasn t been a vote. Wesley UMC has been through a lot the past two-plus years and I know this issue hasn t added any stability. Yet in our lesson from Matthew, Jesus tells us that despite the world and all the distractions we face, we are to remain focused, mindful, humble, and steadfast. Our anxieties, fears, and doubt are to give way to a peace and confidence found in the Spirit of the living God, our rock and foundation. The situations we find ourselves in personally and the situation we find ourselves in as a denomination can either build us up or tear us down. Each of us has a choice to live in fear or peace and harmony, despite our differences. We can either invite God to be at work in and through us as conduits of grace and love or we can let our situations control our faith, trust, and decisions. As Charles Stanley puts it, the key is in who you allow to interpret what happens to you. If you and I only see the challenges before us and compare what we get or don t get, then we often feel overwhelmed and irritated because our choice leaves us fighting with the tools we have-our words, our experiences, our convictions, and our comfort. Friends, Jesus wants us to be wiser than the world. We aren t supposed to lean on our own understanding, but upon the renewing Spirit of God that calls us out from the world into a ministry to our community, schools, and work place for the transformation and healing of it. 4 As your pastor I want to invite you our upcoming Church-hall meeting concerning the proposed One Church Plan on February 10 th from 7-8:15pm. This is an opportunity to learn about not just the plan, but how it came to be; information will be provided. We will also spend some time in prayer, and I encourage all of Wesley to pray for the delegates who are heading to St. Louis, MO for the Special Session of the General Conference. You can find some of the information online at There are some helpful resources there too, like a podcast, which your church leadership has also been encouraged to listen to. Thank you all in advance for your prayers and support of myself, the church, and the denomination as a whole. In Christ, Pastor Jeff Lathrop Prayer for Unity: Gracious and loving God, We ask that you place within us the desire to love one another as you have loved us. That you would help us to forgive one another as you have forgiven us, for it is by this love that others will come to see and know you more. May we be unified in our mission to transform and heal your world, living in union and harmony with others, in a bond of peace and fellowship found in your Spirit of unity. May we be united in our love for you and pray with the mindfulness of Jesus, guided by one heart, one witness, and one voice that glorifies you. And may we be an example to those we love and to the world of your transformative and healing love. Help us to live into and live out of a heart and spirit filled with grace and hope. We ask this all in Jesus name, AMEN M r E a C v Contacting Pastor Jeff jeff.lathrop@midconetwork.com cell phone: Office hours: 9:00-12:00 & 1:15-2:45, Monday Thursday 4

United Methodist Camping for 2019 It s not too early to begin thinking about summer camp. The United Methodist Dakotas Conference operates three camps: Wesley Acres on Bald Creek north of Valley City; Lake Poinsett south of Watertown, SD; and Storm Mountain in the Black Hills near Rapid City, SD. Other opportunities are provided through the camps operated by the Minnesota Annual Conference: Northern Pines near Park Rapids, Kowakan Adventures in Ely, and Koronis Ministries by Paynesville. As examples of the kind of experiences offered at these camps, our closest camp, Wesley Acres, this summer will be providing Son- Seekers for grades K-4, My Craft Camp for grades 4-6, Minecraft and Canoe camps for grades 5-8, Junior High Basketball Blast for grades 6-9, in addition to family camps for all ages in June and July. Pastor Jeff will be leading Capture the Experience a photography and video camp for senior high. To find out more, pick up one of the camp brochures at the Welcome Center in the church lobby and/or go online at Wesley has scholarship support available to assist families with the cost of camps. The early bird deadline for discounted rates is April 30, so plan to register by that time. For further information, you may check with Pastor Jeff or Judy Christy. Mark your calendars for Camp Sunday at Wesley on March 10! Wednesday Soup Supper in Lent, beginning March 13 Watch for a sign up sheet to let us know that you are willing to help provide soup, bread or dessert. Contact Pat Henry at pathenry@gra.midco.net for details. 5

Lydia Project The United Methodist General Conference will be coming to Minneapolis in The Dakotas- Minnesota Area has a wonderful opportunity to come together to provide hospitality for this conference. We intend to greet every delegate, dignitary, bishop, and spouse with a handmade scarf, to serve not only as a memento of General Conference but also as a practical solution to drafty, air-conditioned rooms. That's where you come in! We are inviting United Methodists in Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota to help us knit or crochet 10,000 purple scarves. We are calling this initiative the Lydia Project, after Lydia in Acts 16. Project Details: Scarves should be hand-knitted or hand-crocheted. Since this is a Minnesota event, please use solid purple yarn, like the colors of the Minnesota Vikings or Prince. Royal purple and bright purple are great. Please avoid lavender color and do not use variegated yarn. Please use acrylic yarn that could be washed if needed. The pattern can be the creator's choice. Finished projects should be 6-7 inches wide and at least 60 inches long (think about wrapping a scarf around your own neck to stay warm in a drafty room). If you add fringe, which is optional, please be sure that the scarf itself is at least 60 inches long before the fringe. When the scarf is done, package it individually in a gallon-size Ziploc bag. You may bring your completed scarves to the church office or leave them at the Welcome Center on Sunday mornings. We have special tags to attach to the scarves. They will then be brought to the 2019 Dakotas Conference in June. Let s see how many we can send from Wesley! The following is a link to the Dakotas Conference web site with more details of this project: 6

Wesley Finance Report: January 2019 As we have begun a new year here at Wesley I decided to and share some information regarding the costs we incur to do our mission and ministry here at Wesley. Grace is a free gift from God, but doing His work here costs extra! (HA!) We spend about $20,000 here each month. Here s a quick breakdown of some of our regular monthly expenses. Pastors Salary, including health insurance and Pension: $7000 Other Staff Salaries $5500 Church Building Heat and Lights $3500 Property Insurance $1000 Parsonage costs (not including mortgage payment) $600 Office and administration (paper, postage, etc) $1000 Ministry materials and costs $1000 Gift to the Dakotas Conference: 13% of Offerings Variable (Support for Regional and Global Programs) These cost vary some depending on the season, but this gives you an idea how Wesley spends the donations it receives. In order to make the finances work here at Wesley, we need to receive $20,000 a month on average as well. Please give according to your ability to allow Wesley to accomplish our mission of Making New Disciples of Jesus Christ for the Transformation of the World. If we share our resources that we have received we can continue making the world a better place in the image of God. John Galegher, Jr. Treasurer Wesley Book Club will meet on February 19 at 7:00 p.m. Book: Cold Day for Murder by Dana Stabenow Hostess: Peggy Kindem peggykindem@gmail.com For more information contact Pat Henry at pathenry@gra.midco.net or

The children are off to a great start in 2019! I so enjoy their enthusiasm on Sunday mornings who needs coffee, right? Parents, the children will be singing on two Sundays the remainder of the Sunday School year. Those Sundays are March 10 and May 12 (Mother s Day). Please mark your calendars so that your child is able to attend church on those two Sundays and be able to sing for the congregation. With our numbers being low, even if one child is not able to come, it really effects the rest of the group. Thank you for bringing your children to Wesley. If anyone has questions, concerns, suggestions, please let me know. Kellie Burgess, Children s Music Leader Adult Sunday school Join the Adult Sunday school Library class as they continue a video series based on the book The Next Christians. Reading ahead is not required, but books will be available to order as desired. This class meets on Sunday mornings at 10:10 am in the church library. In his six-session video-based small group bible study, The Next Christians, Gabe Lyons cites modern day examples and looks ahead over the next century to how Christians can adapt to a new way of living their faith. In the wake of the stunning findings that Unchristian, Gabe Lyon s and David Kinneman s book, shared with the world about younger generations disenchantment with Christianity, Gabe Lyons became an active participant in many key discussions about the future of Christianity in the U.S. and the world. Lyons looks ahead at how Christianity can and must adapt over the next 100 years, as he optimistically paints a picture of how it s best days might lay ahead as a new generation rediscovers their faith in this unprecedented new era in the West. 10
