1 Wollaston Connections Monthly Newsletter of Wollaston Church of the Nazarene September 2016 New Church Directory Plans are in the works to publish a new church directory. Mark your calendars for November 5 th & 6 th for portrait days! We will be using Lifetouch to help us schedule and take portraits of our church families. Stay tuned for information on how to schedule your family s appointment with the photographer. L.I.F.T. (Ladies in Fellowship Together) L.I.F.T. continues meeting on Wednesday nights, 6:30-8:00 PM. We will be starting a new study in the next few weeks, so stay tuned! We hope you will prayerfully consider coming during the mid-week craziness of life to join us in discussion and prayer and leave feeling encouraged and supported to face the rest of your week! We LOVE seeing new faces. Hope you can join us! Contact Pam Jayne (ddjayne04@gmail.com) with any questions or for more information. Worship Team Volunteers Needed! If you are interested or want more information, please contact Megan Johnston at mmcsnjohnston@gmail.com. Youth Group Sunday Nights We are so excited to kick off the new school year with Sunday night youth group. We are making a few minor changes. For starters, youth group will run from 6:30-8:00 PM. We will also meet at the ENC gym to start off with each week, so come right there. We also want to encourage teens to bring a few bucks each week, for our new snack bar that will be available. A few bucks will get them several items. Also WE WELCOME FRIENDS!!! We would love to see teens bring their friends. It's why we do what we do. We want to create a safe space where they can gain a sense of belonging, feel valued, and discover a God who deeply loves them. We hope we do that on Sunday nights. Pastor Andrea
2 In the Spotlight What is your favorite movie? Hannah: Dead Poets Society Sam: anything directed by Ken Burns What is your favorite book (or the last book you read)? Hannah: To Kill a Mockingbird Sam: Last book I read was Bringing Nature Home by Doug Tallamy What is your pet peeve? Hannah: Spontaneous smelly things and disorganization. Sam: Stupidity...so yes, sometimes I'm my own worst enemy. What is your favorite food? Hannah: cheese Sam: meat What's your favorite restaurant? Hannah: Burtons Grill Sam: any good diner What is something people don't know about you? Hannah: I like to sew. Sam: I'm smelly, disorganized and spontaneous. What is your favorite worship song? Hannah: Right now it's You Make Me Brave by Bethel Music. All time favorite is Great Is Thy Faithfulness. Sam: This Is My Father's World 3 Things I m most thankful for in my life right now include... Hannah: freedom, family and friends Sam: my wife, my daughters and my job What is your favorite Bible verse? Hannah: Joshua 1:9 Sam: Jeremiah 17:7-8 Describe a time you particularly felt close to the Lord. Hannah: Most recently during my pregnancy with Bea. Complications after delivery and recovery were pretty tough and the only thing that eased my physical pain was "Great is Thy Faithfulness" and knowing that in everything He is faithful. Sam: Throughout life I've had my ups and downs. Times where I felt I was walking in step with the Lord and other times where I felt very distant because of poor choices I made that separated me from God. I hope that as others see me walking this spiritual journey that they see someone who hungers and thirst for righteousness. I am not all I should be, but I pray that every day I draw closer to the Lord and strive to win the prize. continued on page 4
3 The Nazarene Women s Project: Women Helping Women in Liberia by Mary Lou Shea Liberia has been in the news for all the wrong reasons in recent years, including civil war and, more recently, the deadly plague called Ebola. Many families have been torn apart, and many households have buried their fathers and husbands. As a result, more and more Liberian women have shouldered the responsibility of providing for their families and communities. In 2001, Edith N Boyou, a Nazarene pastor s wife, founded the Nazarene Women s Project with the help of Nazarene Compassionate Ministries (NCM). The goal? For the people to be empowered to help their families and community and to be a witness... to share their Christian faith with people in the area." Such a mandate requires practical skills that are valuable to potential customers. So, Edith and other women began teaching one another how to bake cornbread and potato bread and other tasty, healthy treats. They share with others the crafts of soapmaking and batik, a technique for hand-dying fabrics using wax to prevent the dye from coloring certain areas, which can later be dyed a different color once the original wax is boiled away in water. The nine-month program includes daily Bible study and devotions, along with practical skills and the encouragement that comes from working together for the good of all, in fellowship with Christ. Together, the women learn how to run a successful small business, even as they provide baked goods for the church-run school located next door to the Project s home base, and soap and batik for the larger community. Edith is now contemplating a showroom for the Project s varied and useful items. Such a gathering place would allow the women to market their goods to a broader audience, and might encourage others to join the Project or support its efforts. In every case, the women work for the greater glory of God, sharing with everyone the faith that sustains them as surely as the bread they bake! Adapted from the Africa Region s newsletter Out of Africa. Mark Your Calendar! Sunday, October 2 nd New Friends Gathering the church office at office@wconaz.org to RSVP. 4 Mohnkern, continued from page 2 Some ways I see the Lord at work in my life right now are... Hannah : For the first time since becoming a mother, I am able to be a full time stay at home mom. I am so blessed to have this opportunity especially in knowing how hard it is to be away from my kids and now very thankful I don't have to worry about missing out on the time together. Sam: Inwardly I feel like God is always fine tuning. I don't ever want to come to a place of complacency in my walk which requires constant reshaping of my stubborn ways. Outwardly I feel like God is challenging me to find ways to reach out to people and neighbors that I know need Him and the grace God offers. How can our Church Family be praying for you? Hannah: Prayer for wisdom, strength and patience as our family grows. Sam: Stubbornness. Ask that God would continue to reshape and change me and to help me constantly focus on the needs of others. The needs of my wife, family, co-workers, ENC community that I serve every day or those that I pass in my daily coming and going.
