1 August 2013 VOL. XLV, NO. 8 St. Paul s United Methodist Church Tucson, Arizona IT S STILL NEWS!. Hello Friends! This is a great time to be a part of St Paul s United Methodist Church! As Angie begins her new ministry at Santa Cruz Valley UMC we are blessed to welcome our new pastor, Janessa Chastain. By this time most of you have met Janessa and even heard her preach. She is an outstanding pastor and by her presence we have been offered an unusual gift. As she begins to develop her ministry and come to understand what it means to be the pastor of a local congregation we get to learn from her and to offer ourselves as truly generous, welcoming hospitable people. Which is to say that we all get to be like Jesus for each other! I am looking forward to this continuing mutuality of hospitality and believe that God has a unique word for us all in this time of transition. I am eager to receive it! We are called to be a community of generosity and love where we invite others to join us in becoming disciples of Jesus Christ for the good of the world. Called... for the good of the world! If interested, please contact Linda Jones or Nancy Scott. 1 STEWARDSHIP DEVELOPMENT TASK FORCE (Leader: Rich Revis) Thank you to all who contributed to our Second Annual July 4 th Scholarship Silent Auction Event! It was a success because of you! What a joy seeing so many Task Force Groups working together; Stewardship Development, Community Events and Developing Relationships between Parents and Children. Thank you to our St. Paul s Foundation for sponsoring this event again this year by donating $1,500 to the Scholarship Fund. We are also grateful to our many volunteers and those of you who made generous donations to our silent auction. Thank you to our St. Paul s Harp Choir and Grace Multiplied for sharing your talents. The musical entertainment was superb! Thank you to Upward Sports and our St. Paul s Youth for helping with the popcorn and silent auction. Finally a BIG thank you to Michael DeSchalit for being our Master of Ceremonies as well as providing us with an incredible magic show! Approximately 300 attended and after expenses, we added $5,300 to our Scholarship Fund. We praise God for such amazing results which will allow us to support all who want to participate in fee based programs at St. Paul's. Our goal is to continually improve our large community events and we hope you will respond to the July 4 th Event Survey that will be forthcoming in the near future via . Thank you for making a difference! COFFEE TABLE Thank you to our Children s Ministry for handling the coffee table in June; only September

2 and December remain open. Our goal is to have a coffee table every Sunday and if we get commitments to cover the two open months, we will achieve that goal. Please contact Nancy Scott to reserve your month. IF YOU CAN HELP, UPWARD SPORTS NEEDS YOUR TIME AND ENERGY Our biggest need is coaches and referees but there are numerous opportunities available at Upward Basketball and Cheerleading. There are always youth seeking scholarships, so are you called to support a youth in need by paying his/her registration? The Snack Bar staff (primarily three in number) work every Saturday to ensure the snack bar is up and running. All monies earned at the snack bar go back into Upward for scholarships, trophies and additional supplies for the snack bar. Are you moved to volunteer one week in the snack bar? Starbucks (22nd and Harrison) provides Upward with pastries each Saturday to help raise money for Upward, so would you consider donating some pastries or other treats to be offered during game day? Maybe you would offer to run the time clock/scoreboard during Upward games? Or just maybe you would like to show up on game day and cheer for the youth during their games? Open your heart, hear God's calling, come be a part of Upward Basketball and Cheerleading. You won't regret it. I wish there was enough room in this article to give you all the details of the trip, but that would fill Epistles for the next year. So to sum it up in a sentence or two, we spent five days at a beautiful host church in San Diego, where we could conduct prayer group and leadership training. We served others less fortunate as us by provided one of the most basic of necessities Clean drinking water. And, we shared our vision with the community by distributing book marks with the Footprints in the Sand poem on one side and our youth group vision statement on the other all while letting folks know where we came from and what we stand for. The kids that went on this trip exceeded my every expectation in how they conducted themselves and by how much they all grew spiritually in just one week. Now that the mission trip is complete, we continue to meet more regularly to enjoy many summer activities such as going to a Tucson Padres Baseball game, weekly prayer groups at the Krantz residence and a hike planned for the top of Mt. Lemmon. Our youth are also looking forward to a visit from our very new Associate Pastor, Janessa, which is also in the works in the very near future.
