Good Friday Tenebrae Vespers April 3, 2015 Sentences and ollects He was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon him. And with his stripes we are healed. Almighty God, graciously behold this your family, for whom our Lord Jesus hrist was willing to be betrayed, to be given into the hands of sinners, and to suffer death on the cross; who now lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen We all, like sheep, have gone astray; And the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. Almighty and most merciful God, give us grace so to contemplate the assion of our Lord that we may find in it the forgiveness of our sins, through Jesus hrist, your Son, our Lord. Amen. The Seven Words of hrist on the ross Reading I Luke 23:33-34a And when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. And Jesus said, Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. Hymn Jesus, In Your Dying Woes LSB 447, sts. 1-3 hoir Jesus, in Your dying woes, Even while Your lifeblood flows, raving pardon for Your foes: Savior, for our pardon sue When our sins Your pangs renew, For we know not what we do: ongregation Oh, may we, who mercy need, Be like You in heart and deed, When with wrong our spirits bleed: (1st candle is extinguished) II Reading Luke 23:39-43 One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him, saying, Are you not the hrist? Save yourself and us! But the other rebuked him, saying, Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong. And he said, Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom. And he said to him, Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in aradise.

Hymn Jesus, In Your Dying Woes LSB 447, sts. 4-6 hoir Jesus, pitying the sighs Of the thief, who near You dies, romising him paradise: May we in our guilt and shame Still Your love and mercy claim, alling humbly on Your name: ongregation May our hearts to You incline And their thoughts Your cross entwine. heer our souls with hope divine: (2nd candle is extinguished) III Reading John 19:25-27 But standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother s sister, Mary the wife of lopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, Woman, behold, your son! Then he said to the disciple, Behold, your mother! And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home. Hymn Jesus, In Your Dying Woes LSB 447, sts. 7-9 hoir Jesus, loving to the end Her whose heart Your sorrows rend, And Your dearest human friend: May we in Your sorrows share, For Your sake all peril dare, And enjoy Your tender care: ongregation May we all Your loved ones be, All one holy family, Loving, since Your love we see: (3rd candle is extinguished)

Reading Mark 15:34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, IV which means, Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani? My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Hymn Jesus, In Your Dying Woes LSB 447, sts hoir Jesus, whelmed in fears unknown, With our evil left alone, While no light from heav n is shown: When we seem in vain to pray And our hope seems far away, In the darkness be our stay: ongregation Though no Father seems to hear, Though no light our spirits cheer, May we know that God is near: (4th candle is extinguished) Reading John 19:28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), I thirst. V A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. Hymn Jesus, In Your Dying Woes LSB 447, sts hoir Jesus, in Your thirst and pain, While Your wounds Your lifeblood drain, Thirsting more our love to gain: Thirst for us in mercy still; All Your holy work fulfill; Satisfy Your loving will: ongregation May we thirst Your love to know. Lead us in our sin and woe Where the healing waters flow: (5th candle is extinguished)

Reading John 19:30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. VI It is finished, Hymn Jesus, In Your Dying Woes LSB 447, sts hoir Jesus, all our ransom paid, All Your Father s will obeyed; By Your suff rings perfect made: Save us in our soul s distress; Be our help to cheer and bless While we grow in holiness: ongregation Brighten all our heav nward way With an ever holier ray Till we pass to perfect day: (6th candle is extinguished) Reading Luke 23:46 Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, And having said this he breathed his last. VII Father, into your hands I commit my spirit! Hymn Jesus, In Your Dying Woes LSB 447, sts hoir Jesus, all Your labor vast, All Your woe and conflict past, Yielding up Your soul at last: When the death shades round us low r, Guard us from the tempter s pow r, Keep us in that trial hour: ongregation May Your life and death supply Grace to live and grace to die, Grace to reach the home on high: (7th candle is extinguished)

rayers O Savior of the world, by your cross and precious blood you redeemed the world. Save us and help us, we humbly implore you, O Lord. We adore you, Lord Jesus, in your cross and assion, through which you have brought life and joy into the world. Be gracious to us according to your mercy and bless us and lift up the light of your countenance upon us and give us your peace. Gracious Jesus, our Lord and our God, at this hour you bore our sins in your own body on the tree so that we, being dead to sin, might live unto righteousness. Have mercy upon us now and at the hour of our death and grant to us, your servants with all others who devoutly remember your blessed assion, a holy and peaceful life in this world and through your grace eternal glory in the life to come, where, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, you live and reign, God forever. Amen. Have mercy on us. Have mercy on us. Grant us peace. Lord s rayer (whispered) Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the pow r and the glory forever and ever. Amen. losing of the Tomb There is no benediction as the worship service is not ended.
