As I have done some reading and contemplation on this forty-day Christian observance, I d like to share a few thoughts about what and where our Lenten journey can take us. Provides the opportunity (if we choose) to slow down and pay attention to our faith and relationship with God. Pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17), set a time every day and stay connected with God. Focus on God s power and promises, rather than the problems of the world (taken from an article by Al Edeker from Life: Beautiful) The last thought is that I will challenge us all to focus on God s promises during Lent, as we all can be inundated with the news of the day from time to time. Let s challenge ourselves to be positive in our Lenten journey and strengthen our relationships to God, and each other. 3 Page 3 WELCA NEWS WELCA had a very successful Winterfest! Our profit for the food pantry came to just over $2500! It s always a busy week, but it s the fellowship that helps drive us! We will continue sewing little dresses. At our March meeting, Erica from the Steuben County Library will demonstrate how to use the serger. This is a seam finisher which can be used to enhance the dresses! Another upcoming project is the fleece blankets. We plan on making lap blankets with pockets for wheelchair patients. The ladies at UCC have invited us to a luncheon at their church March 14. We are looking forward to this. Book Club Book Club will meet again on Thursday, April 19, at 12:30, at the home of Margaret Davies. Margaret lives at 975 Grove St., Elmira Her phone # is Please RSVP to Margaret if you are coming. Remember to bring your lunch! Also - and this is something new - write the name and author of one book you would especially like us to read on a slip of paper. We will put all suggestions in a hat and draw one out. (We always have SO MANY good suggestions for our next book, and this new method may expedite the selection process.) ;>) YOU are encouraged to come! You will be glad you did! The book we will read and review for April 19 is, To Heaven and Back, by Mary C. Neal, M.D. New York Times bestseller A kayak accident during a South American adventure takes one woman to heaven where she experienced God s peace, joy, and angels and back to life again. In 1999 in the Los Rios region of southern Chile, orthopedic surgeon, devoted wife, and loving mother Dr. Mary Neal drowned in a kayak accident. While cascading down a waterfall, her kayak became pinned at the bottom and she was immediately and completely submerged. Despite the rescue efforts of her companions, Mary was underwater for too long, and as a result, died. To Heaven and Back is Mary s remarkable story of her life s spiritual journey and what happened as she moved from life to death to eternal life, and back again. Detailing her feelings and surroundings in heaven, her communication with angels, and her deep sense of sadness when she realized it wasn t her time, Mary shares the captivating experience of her modern-day miracle. Mary s life has been forever changed by her newfound understanding of her purpose on earth, her awareness of God, her closer relationship with Jesus, and her personal spiritual journey suddenly enhanced by a first-hand experience in heaven. Her Projects include Lacrosse the nations ( a sports and team building fundraiser for the local area; Womens (girls) health education classes, and public and private tutoring in English speaking YOUTH GROUP We did not have a formal meeting yet, but a few youth have helped to serve at the Pancake Dinner. They did a great job! The youth is invited again to help with serving at the Spaghetti Dinner on 3/4, and the Shepherd s Table on 3/11. On 3/10 Lugene and I will start working with the youth to prepare for the youth led service on 4/15. Again, anybody with any ideas or questions, please don t hesitate to contact me! 5 Emanuel s Council Word Meeting Update: February meeting canceled due to weather. Page 5 Sisters in Heart Secret Pray Partner Program Update! The first ever cordless phone was created by God. He named it "Prayer". It never loses it's signal and you never have to recharge it. Use it anywhere and anytime.* Ladies, due to unforeseen circumstances I had to move our annual Sister in Heart gathering to Sunday, April 22 right after church. This means a couple of things. First, (and I m sure it goes without saying), please continue to pray for your Sister in Heart until our April gathering. Second, if you ve never attended before, please consider joining us this year. It is a wonderful way to meet the other ladies of the congregation. Even if you won t be participating, we would love to have you at our tea. Please read below for more information. Sign up begins in April. How good are you at you at keeping a secret? The Women s ministry of Emanuel Lutheran would like to introduce you to our new Sisters in Heart secret prayer partner ministry. It is basically the exchange of names within a ladies group where you pray for them daily. This will be a year- long commitment and open to all the ladies of our congregation. We will meet April 22 for lunch to draw our names for the coming year, and then meet once a year to reveal our secret sister to one another and draw another name for the following year. The main focus is on providing Christian support to one another through PRAY- ER! We pray daily for our Sister in Heart and give encouragement by way of cards and notes throughout the year. If you participated last year, but will not participate this year, please come and reveal yourself to your sister in heart. But any lady of the congregation may come and join us for lunch, just sign up! In the meantime, if you have any questions, please feel free to call Mary Ellen Brennan at (607) or meb3116@gmail.com. Last year 19 ladies of our congregation participated and we had 24 join us for lunch. We hope this year you too will consider being a Sister In Heart. I thank my God every time I remember you. 6 Page 6 The March Bible Study will return to the 2 nd Tuesday of the month, that being 13 th from noon 1:00pm. We ll be looking at Genesis chapters The Men in Mission have been very busy: Souper Bowl Sunday on February 4 th was very well received. Those who attended were offered a variety of excellent soups. Donations totaled almost $350, with the money going to Lutheran Disaster Relief. The Shrove Tuesday pancake supper, done with our sister churches in our Fellowship Hall was also a success. The $ received went to the Community Food Pantry. Friday and Saturday, April 6 th and 7 th we ll have a tool rummage sale in the Fellowship Hall. We have many tools so far, but we can always use a few more. If you have some to donate let any member of MIM know and we ll pick them up. We also need volunteers to take some of what we have to clean them up as needed. Proceeds from this effort will go to our Nicaragua Project. And don t forget, Oktoberfest returns this year. It ll be just as much fun as the first one and maybe more so. It s an evening of good German food and music. As you can see, we re going to be quite busy in 2018, and much of our effort revolves around food. (We are Lutherans, after all.) As always, all men all welcome to be a part of our group. We can certainly put new members to work.

7 Page 7 Shepherd s Table Our Shepherd s Table is quickly approaching. Mark your calendars for Sunday, March 11. This involves serving dinner to the people at the Salvation Army and then cleaning up. It takes place from 4:00-6:00pm. If you are unable to serve, but would like to help we need cookies or brownies which we serve with ice cream. This is a fun time with great fellowship!
