1 THE CHURCHMAN Volume 12, Issue 5 May 2017 First United Methodist Church of Atmore.. And More Change Randal Barnett (SPRC Chair) announced that Reverend Brennan Peacock will be appointed to FUMC Atmore on 1 July. Reverend Peacock is currently appointed to FUMC Wetumpka. Previously he has served Providence UMC and Ashland Place. Reverend Peacock is from Pensacola and a graduate of the University of West Florida and Duke University. He is a gifted leader, compassionate, patient, hopeful, relatable, inclusive, and has an eye and heart toward the least of these and is willing to serve in a variety of capacities. He and his wife Patti have two sons (Eli is going into the 9 th grade and Adam into the 6 th ). Reverend Peacock and his family have already planned a vacation this summer with extended family so the dates I provided in April have changed. Reverend Peacock will preach on 2 July and then be on vacation on 9 and 16 July. There will be visiting preachers on those dates. I realize 2 July is a holiday weekend and it is important to maintain family traditions, just as it is important to support Reverend Peacock and his family as they take their vacation. So, I am letting you know about this change so you can make adjustments to your schedule if that is possible. I know that many of us come back from the beach or the lake or the river to be here on Sunday morning. If that s possible it would be good for you to make those arrangements early. I remember my first Sunday was the 4 th of July weekend and I am thankful for Ruth Vickery s 90 th birthday celebration. Her family made up most of the congregation that day! The Peacock family will return from their vacation on 18 July and be ready to enjoy Wednesday Night Supper and a night at the pool on 19 July. How fun will that be to get to know them at the pool! I appreciate your patience as we make the transition. And I am thankful for our word this year OPEN. I know you are a great church family and you are going to support Reverend Peacock as he leads you into the future. Paul writes this wonderful letter to explain why he will not be visiting them as soon as he had thought. He is hopeful and encouraging about the church made of Gentile Christians and Jewish Christians. And in the part of the letter where he writes about a new life in Christ he gives the marks of the true Christian (Chapter 12): let love be genuine hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good love one another with mutual affection bless those who persecute you bless and do not curse them rejoice with those who rejoice (Continued on page 2) The Reverend Dr. Debora Bishop
2 Page 2 THE CHURCHMAN (Continued from page 1) outdo one another in showing honor do not lag in zeal be ardent in spirit serve the Lord rejoice in hope be patient in suffering persevere in prayer contribute to the needs of the saints extend hospitality to strangers weep with those who weep live in harmony with one another do not be haughty associate with the lowly do not claim to be wiser than you are do not repay anyone evil for evil take thought for what is noble in the sight of all live peaceably with all WOW! What a great word for us. Maybe in this time of transition we could each pick out a few of those traits and focus on them. We could make sure we are being positive about everything we are doing and build upon the work that has already been accomplished. Remember you can ask any member of SPRC a question or express a concern and any joy. I am so thankful for the leadership of this wonderful church family. The last thing Paul writes in Chapter 12 is, Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. You are More Than Bricks and you are good! Love, Debora The CREW Methodist Youth Fellowship Yay for May! We are so excited for this season, that the youth couldn t wait to get outside and get summer started. In April, we decided to take full advantage of the warm weather and get out in our garden on Earth Day. This was yet another wonderful learning lesson as we not only discovered some of the problems we had with our garden last year, like irrigation, but also things we could do to fix it. We would like to send a big thanks to Mr. Chris Harrison for taking time out of his Saturday and coming to show us how to grow tomatoes in hay bales and how cow manure (ew!) can help keep our dirt from compacting. We can t wait for our sunflowers and tomatoes to arrive! Kay Leigh Miller Youth Director This month on Saturday, May 20 th, the youth will be headed to ukulele lessons at the Blue Angel Music store. We will be leaving from the church at 8 am, returning around 11:30 am. Admission is free and we invite anyone who has ever wanted to learn to play this fun instrument to join us - this is an event open to everyone! If you would like to participate or chaperone, please contact me at or let me know by Wednesday, May 17 th. Best, Kay Leigh
3 Volume 12, Issue 5, May 2017 Page 3 Music Ministry Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth. Psalm 96:1 My Child, Have you ever seen the exact same sunset twice? It has never happened, and it never will. I've got a million of them. I never run out of new creations. I made you in My image, and I want you to be creative like Me. Say new prayers. Sing new songs. It's great to have prayers and songs that other people have written. They help when you're stuck or you can't think of anything new to pray or sing. But every now and then, get off by yourself and sing Me a new song. It doesn't matter how it sounds. Just sing what's on your heart. It will sound great to Me, and you'll feel better, too. Be creative. I am. Your Creator, God I found a book in the choir room today. The book is from God for Teens by Claire and Curt Cloninger, and I wanted to share this with you. Being a music person, this message really touched me. Thank you for those who sing and ring and play instruments with all their hearts, whether it be in our choirs and groups, or in the congregation every Sunday morning. It does sound great!! BTW, this book does belong to someone here and you may want to have it back! Let me know! The Cunningbells are on their summer break and will begin practices in the fall. If anyone has an interest in playing with the Cunningbells, just talk to one of our ringers. We still have plenty of room for anyone else who wants to sing with our Chancel Adult Choir. We practice on Wednesday evenings at 6:45 p.m. Come join us! Our Children and Youth Handbell group will share their music on May 14 th, Mother's Day. We are very excited, so please be at church that day! Gilda Missions Gilda Stubben Music Director Evangelism Please support the fundraiser for our 2017 Mission Team to Palmares, Costa Rica. Wednesday Night Supper, May 3, 6:00 pm Donations and Tips only! (Check with the church office to see if reservations are closed or for more information!) The Costa Rica Mission Team will be commissioned on Sunday, June 4. Please be in worship that morning to support the team as they represent YOU and all of FUMC Atmore in service to our neighbors in Palmares, Costa Rica. (Bryan Keel, Kay Leigh Miller, Mary Frances Chapman Wood, Will Chapman, Debora Bishop, Joe Hardy, Renee Hardy) Thanks to all who provided paper goods for Mobile Inner City Mission. Our offerings will be greatly appreciated! Please make time on Thursday, May 4 to participate in one of the National Day of Prayer events. Dios te Bendiga (God bless you.)
4 Page 4 THE CHURCHMAN Children - Faithful Quest It may not look like it on the calendar or even feel like it some days, but summer is upon us! On June (5:30-8 pm), all children from nursery through completed 6th grade are invited to the VBS - Maker Fun Factory where we are going to celebrate being created by God and being built for a purpose. God made you. God is for you. God is always with you. God will always love you. God made you for a reason. Wow, God! Please join us for the celebration and spread God's love to all of our children. We need volunteers! Please contact me if you would like to help in any way. We could use help in the following areas: Sarah Frances Thompson Children s Director Crew Guides: (2 adults per crew) take grade level groups to activity stations throughout the evening and assist station leaders. Bible Discovery Leaders: (2 adults) lead the Bible story station. Imagination Station: (2 adults) lead arts and crafts activities. Nursery Crew: (2 adults) will assist our younger children with all VBS activities. We will also need volunteers to help with decorating during the week prior to the start of VBS. If you would like to help by financial donation, please make checks payable to FUMC Atmore with "VBS" noted on the memo line. All donations should be turned into the church office. Thank you for your continued support of our children! I am also very excited to say that Mac Henley has decided to support our children's program through his Eagle Scout project. He is building our children a new play space, called a gaga ball pit, that has been extremely popular at Blue Lake Camp. We hope you will give Mac your support in this project in any way you can. It is an awesome thing to see our youth already leading and supporting our children. Wow, God! Thank you Sarah Frances For my Eagle Project, I intend to construct a gaga pit for the young people of the church. Gaga is an Israeli dodgeball game that the kids experienced at Blue Lake. Some materials have been acquired but additional funds are needed to complete the project. A fundraiser is being planned and any donations would be appreciated. - Mac Henley Summer Swimming at the City Pool after Wednesday Suppers begins June 7... Join us! VBS starts June 11th!!
