Back Thank you to First Baptist Church and Janet Smith for their vision thirty years ago to begin a childcare ministry for our community. The Growing Place has touched many lives of children, parents and teachers. I am thankful to say I have been a part of this journey for twenty-one of those years. We look forward to blessing and serving many more families in the years to come. Katherine Davis ~ Director of The Growing Place Childcare
2 Pastor Scotty Dreams from the Other Side of the World A few weeks ago a team of eleven of us from First Baptist Church went to Thailand to serve with some of our missionary friends, David and Pamela Taylor. The Taylors work for the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention with the primary goal of reaching southern portions of Thailand with the gospel. We met the Taylors early last year when they were stateside and lived in our missionary house, Robin s Nest. David is from Albemarle and Pamela is from Asheboro. Robin s Nest was the perfect location for them during their time back home. One of our goals with missions is to establish long term partnerships with our missionaries for the specific purpose of reaching unreached people groups. Our goal is not to establish hundreds of partnerships. Our goal is to establish deep and meaningful partnerships where we share the task of evangelism and ministry among people who have little access to the truth of who Jesus is. Every month we give away over 11% of our regular offering to missions. We also collect special offerings during the year for missions and 100% of those special offerings go to missions. Our largest special offering each year is our Walk Offering with the biggest part of that offering being for Lottie Moon. The Lottie Moon Christmas offering is entirely for international missions and it goes directly to the International Mission Board to fully support missionaries like David and Pamela, Andrew and Leah Snipes, Ben and Jill Gantt and Stephen and Janelle McNeese. We are a praying church, a giving church and a sending church. We are thankful for opportunities to go to work beside our missionaries to share the gospel and to encourage those who serve. We are full partners with our missionaries and we want them to know that they do not serve alone. The call to reach the nations is a call that we all share and strive to accomplish together. One morning in Thailand we met together for worship. One of the songs that we sang together was God of this City. David shared with us that this song was originally written by a mission team in Thailand. As they looked at the city of Bangkok, they were overwhelmed by the lostness of the city, yet they were filled with the hope and power of the gospel. This song was their prayer for the city and for the Thai people. The dream for the gospel to spread in Thailand is a dream that we share as we serve in Thailand and a dream that we have for our own city in Asheboro. Evangelism is something we do at home and to the ends of the earth. May God awaken each of us to His heart for people everywhere. You're the God of this city You're the King of these people You're the Lord of this nation You're the light in this darkness You're the hope to the hopeless You're the peace to the restless There is no one like our God There is no one like You God Greater things have yet to come and greater things have still to be done in this city Page 2
3 HeartSpace Ministry HeartSpace Ministry oversees a property that we use as a transition house for men who have been down and want to turn their lives around. For the last two years it has mainly been a safe place to live, find jobs and return to a regular life. The ministry will launch it s next step in September when the residents will embark upon the next journey in life, their spiritual walk. The residents have their own small group which meet on Tuesday evenings at the house. Each person will attend three other meetings weekly. These include: Sunday morning Worship Services, Wednesday evening Discipleship groups, AWE Worship Service, Men of Steel (recovery group) and Celebrate Recovery. The residents will each have a mentor and will receive counseling weekly. We are looking forward to the journey of discipleship with these men. September is here, and though it seems impossible Thanksgiving is just around the corner. Last year s Thanksgiving dinner was a huge success! We fed over 300 people in our community; many of who may have not had a Thanksgiving dinner. Again, I want to thank all the volunteers who helped minister on Thanksgiving Day. It is our hope that we can once again be salt and light on Thanksgiving and spend time extending the love of Christ. May we impact our community in a way that those we minister to will see the church, the Body of Christ, in a meaningful way and will join a faith community in this next year. Please contact Janet or Rick Davis for more information on how you can help in this church wide mission. Community Thanksgiving Dinner First Baptist Church, Asheboro Thursday, November 22 12:00 pm-3:00 pm CLC The one who blesses others is ABUNDANTLY blessed; those who help others are helped. ~ Proverbs 11:25 Children s Ministry Operation Christmas Child is going strong! The calls, texts, and cards were so appreciated; but we were so crushed with grief, it was the prayers of our FBC family that gave us strength. Jake is no longer with us, but he lives on because of his decision to become an organ donor. If you haven t made that decision, I encourage you to become a donor. Jake was the shining light of our lives and although we know that he is in a much better place, he will be forever missed. Bobby & Maggie Taylor Page 6 Thank you all so much for the thoughts, prayers, texts and phone calls during my mom s sickness and passing. The love and support shown to our family was very much appreciated during the passing of my mother. Kelly Chandler I want to say thank you for the calls, cards, visits, food and prayers. Steven and I are overwhelmed by your generosity and care. If I may borrow from Dorothy Gale of Kansas, There s No Place Like Home. We are so blessed to call FBC Asheboro home. Steven & Season Lahr
