1 Enter to Worship, Exit to Serve The Moravian Messenger Rural Hall Moravian Church 7939 Broad Street, Rural Hall, NC Rev. Dr. Steve E. Craver, Pastor Mailing Address: P. O. Box 487, Rural Hall, NC Phone: (336) Fax: (336) Website: s: Pastor: / Secretary: NOVEMBER 2013 From The Pastor: Thankful for Little Things The other night I had a bowl of popcorn, with the accompanying salt. The next morning I was thirsty all the way to my toenails. I had a drink of cold water and it was wonderful! I was thinking how thankful I was for such a simple thing...a cold glass of water. I love to put on clean socks after a shower...i try to think how thankful I am for such a simple thing. When I am away from home for a time, it is such a pleasure to sleep in my own bed...i try to think how thankful I am for such a simple thing. I love my cup of coffee in the morning...sometimes coffee is just a drink, but once in a while it is an "experience"...i try to think how thankful I am for such a simple thing. I find that when I am living in thanksgiving my attitude in life is turned positive and my whole day is changed. As I reflect on the simple things, I realize these things are not really so simple. How many in this world do not have clean water? How many do not have shoes, much less socks? For that matter how many do not have feet? How many have never had a shower? When I concentrate on the simple things and are thankful for them my whole day becomes a litany of thanksgiving. Anxieties cease and joy takes their place. This was what Paul was referring to when he wrote these words: "Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:4-7 Pastor Steve Chicken Stew & Chili Supper Saturday, November 2 at 5:00 PM Everyone s Invited! 3 Women s Fellowship News Let us pursue the things which make for peace and the things by which one may edify another. Romans 14:19 Our General Meeting/Candle Trimming will be Sunday, November 3 at 4:00 PM. If you plan to attend, please bring a dessert and an unwrapped child s toy to be donated to the Toys For Tots. Always remember if you are not a member of a circle, please think about joining one. It is a great time of fellowship with each other. Please contact one of the circle leaders listed below to find out times that they meet during the month: Circle 1: Judy Tayloe ( ), Circle 2: Billie Williams ( ), Circle 3: Sue Ashburn ( ). Thanks to all the ladies for helping to make the fall breakfast a success. Elizabeth Lancaster Women s Fellowship President Thought for the Month: Kindness is simply love flowing out in little gentlenesses. Women s Fellowship Bake Sale Thanks to everyone that baked, bought chicken pies, purchased baked goods and gave a donation to the bake sale. Without the help and support from all of you it could not be so successful. Again thank you so much for your support to the Women s Fellowship Bake Sale. Newsletter Notes From around the Southern Province Hope s Women s Fellowship held a Ladies Banquet. So? The catering had been arranged and tables neatly set and decorated. So? A hundred guests were coming, not just from Moravian churches, but Baptist, Presbyterian, Catholic, Methodist. So? Arriving first was a late summer rain shower. So? It doused the electricity, leaving fellowship hall in the dark. Oh, dear. But wait. This is a Moravian church. And don t we Moravians typically have at least one Christmas Eve service in the dark until candles! And so the Ladies Banquet went on without a hitch, all in the warm glow of our traditional bees-wax candles. Maybe too warm. Until the electricity kicked back on with the refreshing breeze of air conditioning. Fries Memorial s first ever shred day was a huge success, netting $1,400. Now that s a nice way to make hay out of our waste paper. Leaksville s copier broke. Which meant no newsletter in September. Fortunately, the Trustees stepped in and bought a new copier, which is working great! Certainly good enough to turn out the October newsletter with this little tidbit of news. A wise word to ministers from Moravian Archives super transcriber Grace Robinson, who is typing Bishop Edward Rondthaler s diary ( ) into the computer: This man [Bishop Rondthaler] is something else. Sometimes he writes his sermon on Sunday morning. If Ken [Grace s husband] did that, he would be a wreck! Richard W. Starbuck, Moravian Archives On behalf of the Women s Fellowship, we would like to thank everyone who worked to make the fall breakfast a success. Whether you helped with setting up tables, cracking eggs, decorated tables, advertised our breakfast, took up money, cooked in the kitchen, made coffee, greeted people, served beverages, bused tables, washed dishes or cleaned up afterwards, we THANK YOU for your time, hard work and talents. We appreciate Sara Tucker who organized our gift market and all of the vendors who purchased a table. We appreciate all of those who sold and bought raffle tickets for our Jim Shore Figurine and Bird Bath. We are thankful for everyone who came and ate at the breakfast and invited others to come. It truly takes so many people that are willing to share their time and talent to make the breakfast a success. Hopefully by our hard work, support of each other as a church family we can be examples of the love of Christ to others. If you can help, please sign up on the clipboard that is on the table under the bulletin board Angel Breakfast Rural Hall Moravian Church Saturday, December 14 8:30-10:30 AM What is the Angel Breakfast you ask? It s a time to slow down during the craziness of the Holiday Season and enjoy breakfast with children as they learn about the true meaning of Christmas from an angel s perspective. How does it work? Children from ages 3 up through the 5 th grade will come with one adult to RHMC for an angel craft, Christmas Carols and breakfast. And, since it s BREAKFAST, children are encouraged to come in their pajamas! Does it cost anything? Not at all! The Angel Breakfast is an outreach event that is provided by RHMC and sponsored by the Christian Education Committee. While there is no charge, we do ask that participants bring canned food for Crisis Control. We want children (and adults) to realize that this is the season of GIVING. RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED! Moravian Mania, Part 22 Last month s Moravian Mania question was: Who planted the great gingko tree in the Salem God s Acre? We don t know. Tradition has it that s what we say when we don t know that Bishop Edward Rondthaler planted it after visiting the Holy Land and the General Synod of 1889 in Herrnhut. But another tradition has it that it was planted by James T. Leinbach, treasurer of the Southern Province at the time, who also attended the 1889 Synod. James T. s memoir says he loved plants and flowers and his brother, Julius Leinbach s home, where widower James T. lived, had a huge gingko in the front yard when it was bulldozed in the 1950s to make way for what is now Business 40 in downtown Winston- Salem. But no matter who planted the God s Acre gingko, it turns a beautiful golden hue each November before dropping its leaves. And the state forestry service recognizes it as the largest gingko in all North Carolina. This month s question: Who held the first title to the Wachovia tract in North Carolina? Answer next month.
