1 October 21, 2018 Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time Isaiah 53:10-11 Hebrews 4:14-16 Mark 10:35-45 ********************************* Be Careful What You Ask For Ever long for something, plan for it and then when it happens, feel sheer horror at the place you landed? It takes a very wise heart and strong to character to choose only the roads that are best for us. For most of us, we think, dream, pray and then hold on for the ride, because the destination is nearly always surprising. If we're exceptionally blessed, that surprise is a good one, more often it's a disappointment. And the painful truth is we have no one to blame but ourselves. If we took our eyes off ourselves for a few moments, God and His goals might show through. But that's a lot tougher than it sounds. Think of disciples spending every day in the presence of God's only Son. They should have had all the spiritual direction anyone could need. Yet those twelve poor souls fell into the same trap we do, asking for personal gain, to be favored with powerful positions in the kingdom of God. And mercifully Jesus warned them about the road they were choosing - for thrones of glory in His kingdom are paid for with blood, suffering, sacrifice, martyrdom. It's the age-old story. Dream big, but be ready to pay the price. In other words, be careful what ask for, you just might get it. Copyright 2005 C L Enterprises

3 Parish Announcements World Mission Sunday October 21, 2018 Be A Mission Voice! Today, with Catholics of the world, we are called to offer, at this Eucharistic celebration, our prayers and our generous financial support, through The Society for the Propagation of the Faith, to continue the mission of Jesus. Today we speak up through our prayers and personal sacrifices for our brothers and sisters in the Missions. As little as $25 helps support a catechist for a month in Latin America; $75 provides for the work of religious Sisters in Africa; $100 assists children in schools in Asia. As always, your prayers are your most treasured gift to the Missions. Your prayers and financial help, offered today, WORLD MISSION SUNDAY, support mission priests, religious Sisters and Brothers, and lay catechists who are Christ s witnesses to a world so in need of His healing love and peace. Anointing of the Sick is the Sacrament in which those who are ill are anointed to impart spiritual strength and physical healing. We are currently not able to get names of parishioners who have been admitted to any area hospitals unless the patient specifically directs someone to contact us. Therefore, please contact the parish office or Father Varkey directly to request a visit. We as Catholics are truly blessed with this Sacrament which brings strength and healing. 4 Rosary Rally Results: The attendance record was broken as 25 adults and 10 children gathered together to pray the Rosary last Saturday in honor of Our Lady of Fatima. Mary asks each of us to continue to pray the Rosary daily for conversion in America Two Additional Handicapped Parking Spaces will be added to the parking lot directly to the east of the entrance to the carport area. There will also be a van-accessible space between the two reserved spots. Signs to reflect these spots will be placed next week. Confraternity of Christian Doctrine CCD Parent Faith Enrichment: We are excited to offer an opportunity for parents of CCD students to share fellowship and learn more about our Catholic faith and grow in our relationship with Jesus. Aaron Wanish is facilitating the informal meetings twice a month in the church hall on Wednesday s from 7:00-8:15pm. The next meeting will be October 24th. All Souls Prayer Service: Have you lost a parent, sibling, spouse, child, grandparent or a friend? 5 Roe v. Wade on the Brink? Gospel of Life Presentation by Ben Nguyen On Tuesday, Oct. 23 at 7:00 pm, Ben Nguyen will be the featured speaker for the annual Gospel of Life Celebration at Blessed Sacrament Parish Hall in La Crosse. Ben, formerly the Chancellor for the Diocese of La Crosse, will explain what we need to know about the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling that has been in the news almost daily in light of the Brett Kavanaugh Supreme Court nomination. Ben has doctoral degrees in both law and canon law and serves as Canonical Counsel and Theological Advisor for the Diocese of Corpus Christi. A 6:00 pm Mass celebrated by Bishop William Patrick Callahan at Blessed Sacrament Church will precede the talk.
