3 Our Lady Queen of Peace 3 SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDIINARY TIME MEETINGS AND EVENTS Safe Environment Program Creating a safe environment for children, youth, and vulnerable adults is a priority in the Catholic Diocese of Fort Worth. In the words of Bishop Olson, We share a great responsibility to understand the nature of abuse and the steps we must take to establish and maintain safe, holy, and faith-affirming environments. The requirement for in-depth renewal is designed to safe guard children and young people and to protect all members of the diocesan community in parishes, schools, and ministries. Our Safe Environment Program mandates that all clergy, religious men and women, lay employees, and adult volunteers, prior to beginning their service in the Diocese, meet three requirements: 1. Satisfactorily pass a criminal background check at the beginning of their service and every three years thereafter; and, 2. Satisfactorily complete training regarding the safe environment policy, procedures and practices at the beginning of their service and every three years thereafter; and, 3. Provide consent stating you will abide by the Code of Conduct and Behavior Standards for All Clergy, Religious and Lay Ministers for as long as they remain in service to the Diocese. Each Safe Environment Training is good for 3 years. While many of you are still under the 3 year umbrella, some of you do need to re-take the course. For your convenience, the next Live Session for Safe Environment will be: Monday, January 29 th, :00pm-8:00pm in the Saint Joseph Room Please contact me if you think your training has elapsed and/or I will be contacting you after checking with the various ministries and let you know if you need to update your Safe Environment status. I would like to thank all who have recently completed the Safe and Sacred Session training. I appreciate your commitment in helping to protect our children and vulnerable adults. Thank you so much for your gift of volunteering and time. Tammy DuBose Volunteer Coordinator, Marriage is a beautiful vocation and we often miss out on the joys of it because of the busyness of life. 5 Our Lady Queen of Peace 5 SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDIINARY TIME ADULT FORMATION ADULT FORMATION R.C.I.A meets every Thursday evening at 7:00 pm in the St. Joseph room. Come learn more and enrichen your Catholic Faith or invite someone who is interested in what the Catholic Church teaches. GROWING IN FAITH Dear Padre JANUARY 14, 2018 What s wrong with memorized traditional prayers? Archbishop Fulton Sheen encountered a woman who declared that she d never become Catholic because they pray the same words in the rosary over and over, and she and God doubt the sincerity of anyone who repeats the same words. Sheen asked her if she was sure that her fiancé loved her. Certainly he does. But how do you know? He told me. Then she affirmed that her fiancé had told her so within the hour. When Sheen asked, Did he tell you before? she replied that he told her I love you every night. Sheen advised her not to believe him: He is repeating; he is not sincere. As Sheen cleverly demonstrates, the words I love you don t lose meaning with repetition. Likewise, prayer whether rote or spontaneous is a way of saying, I love you to God. It places us in God s presence, celebrating our loving relationship with him. Saint Teresa of Ávila, a doctor of prayer, wrote in Interior Castle of the Soul that it was important not to think much but to love much when praying. She even considered it a blessing when her mind wandered in prayer because it forced her to concentrate on loving God rather than merely thinking about him! The right form of personal prayer, then, is the one that best expresses our love for God in a spirit of humility, confidence, and perseverance three requirements needed for true prayer, according to another doctor of the Church, St. Alphonsus Liguori. Fr. Byron Miller, CSsR WorldWide Marriage Encounter (Dallas-Fort Worth-East Texas) Samuel answered, Speak, for your servant is listening. Let us practice listening better to God and our spouse by participating in a Worldwide Marriage Encounter (WWME) weekend. The next weekends are Jan.19-21, 2018 and Apr , Dates fill fast. 6 6 Good News! Second Sunday in Ordinary Time (B) 1 Sm 3:3b 10, 19; 1 Cor 6:13c 15a, 17 20; Jn 1:35 42 In a depiction of the calling of two disciples, one scene shows Peter and Andrew walking toward Jesus. Another depicts Peter in the center, with Andrew behind him, and Jesus enthroned on a rock pointing toward him. The scene is simple for a reason. Jesus call is simple: Follow me. Our response should be simple, too. We often complicate the call with questions, fears, or doubts, wanting clarifications and assurances. But it is a simple imperative that requires a one-word answer: yes or no. Or as Samuel responded, Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening. Once accepted, the call implies a new identity born of a new, deeper relationship. When Jesus calls Simon, he changes his name. In the Bible, a name change indicates a new mission or purpose. Abram was renamed Abraham to father the Old Testament people in faith. Simon is now Cephas, or rock. His mission is to father the New Testament people in faith. He is to be a solid, unbreakable foundation for his brothers and eventually the whole Church. His strength comes not from perfection, for we know Peter was weak, but from his acceptance of Jesus love and call no matter his own weakness. Similarly, in baptism and confirmation we take new names that come with our new, deeper calls. It is a meaningful Catholic tradition that parents name their children after a saint who becomes a model for their lives. Like Peter, we are called to greatness by Jesus, who looks at us, names us, and says, Come follow me. Let s live up to that beautiful, simple invitation! GROWING IN FAITH Move closer to God in the New Year While contemplating your New Year s resolutions, wouldn t it be great to make at least one change this year that brings you closer to God? Consider these ideas from other Catholics to strengthen your prayer life, learn more about your faith, or serve your parish. Greg was bored with his prayer routine and wanted a change. His priest suggested he try a novena, nine days of focused prayer. So, Greg chose a novena to the Immaculate Conception. He loved the meditations and felt a connection to Our Lady. Soon, he became hooked on novenas. Once again, he was excited to spend time in prayer. Jennifer s husband is not Catholic and asks lots of questions about her faith. Her own religious education ended years ago, and she became dismayed when she couldn t answer his questions. Learning that adult faith formation classes were starting in her parish, Jenn jumped at the chance to learn more. Everything I discover helps me to grow stronger in my faith, Jennifer declared. I m so excited by what I m learning that my husband wants to come, too. Maureen s children are grown and on their own, yet she teaches a religious education class at her parish. What better way to evangelize our faith than to share it with children? That s where I can do some real good, she said. ONE MINUTE MEDITATIONS: St. Angela Merici - Born in Italy, St. Angela and her sister were raised by an uncle after the deaths of their parents. Angela received the vocational call as a teenager. Her sister died without receiving the Sacraments, so Angela became a Third Order Franciscan to pray for her. She opened her home as a girls school for religious education. She was later inspired by a vision to start a religious community to educate young women, and founded the Ursuline Order. The face of God. God doesn t want us to sacrifice our own wellbeing, but does want us to willingly bring his love to other people. It can be uncomfortable being his loving face to others. This means being patient with those who annoy us, kind to those who are demanding, and forgiving to those who haven t asked. Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; a stranger, and not your own lips (Proverbs 27:2).
