5 Our Lady Queen of Peace 5 TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME GROWING IN FAITH DEAR PADRE I try my best to live as God asks, but I make a lot of mistakes and I don t always feel God s presence. How can I know that God loves me? Most people, at one time or another, find themselves asking this very question. There comes a time in any developing spirituality and awareness of God when it is necessary to ask the question and then come to a faith conviction that we are, indeed, loved. When we ask ourselves the question, Does God love me? we are also asking ourselves, Do I love me? It is very hard for the average person to answer that question, but for those who have a tendency to dwell on every mistake, even after receiving forgiveness through the sacrament of reconciliation or who hold themselves to a standard of perfection, it can be even more difficult. They may find themselves asking, How can God love me when I have all of these thoughts and these feelings? Surely my life is displeasing to God. God loved you first. God s love started everything off. Because God first loved you, he gave you life. God does love you, no matter what you have done, and he offers forgiveness and mercy through reconciliation when you are truly sorry. There is nothing you can possibly do to make God stop loving you. When God loves, he loves for keeps. He will not change. He will always be faithful in his love for you. That is why the Bible tells us: God is love. (Adapted from Understanding Scrupulosity by Fr. Thomas Santa, CSsR) God s search for us Oftentimes it feels like we are searching for God, but he is the one looking for us. God created us, redeemed us, and calls us to follow him. Today, ask God to show you where he s calling you and resolve to follow him. Thou art my God; I will exalt thee, I will praise thy name; for though has done wonderful things, plans formed of old, faithful and sure (Isaiah 25:1). Good News! October 15, 2017 Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time (A) Is 25:6-10a; Phil 4:12-14, 19-20; Mt 22:1-14 Life can make us think we are in control of our lives. We plan, think, execute, and succeed (or fail). Then along comes an illness, an accident, a job loss, or one of countless other things, and we realize we really aren t in control of much. This famous phrase sums it up: Man proposes, God disposes. We can transfer this same false assumption into our relationship with God and expect Mass, prayer, and liturgy to work for us, fill us, and entertain us. But liturgy and prayer are about giving God his glory above all else. When we pray, and especially when we enter into communal liturgy, we are reminded once again that it is all about what God is doing. Isaiah says the Lord will provide for all people. God will provide! We might prepare, serve, or participate, but the director, producer, and main actor is God. We are the supporting cast. That is why liturgy is not so much about our planning, participation, or entertainment but about entering into harmony with God s action and praising him as he asks. The same point can be found in the Gospel. The king sends out invitations for his son s wedding and prepares the feast. He adjusts to the unexpected lack of interest and invites others. The ones who arrive are the ones the master has invited. It would be foolish for one of the invited guests to vaunt their importance. Their role is to humbly enjoy and gracefully help the king and the newlyweds to shine on their night! Fr. Mark Haydu, LC What is a sacramental character? Certain Sacraments leave an indelible mark on our souls. Called the character or seal, it marks us as belonging to Christ (Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC), #1272) in a special and permanent way. The Sacramental character is first received in Baptism and is also imprinted in the Sacraments of Confirmation and Holy Orders. Like Baptism, these Sacraments are only received once. Each mark patterns us after Christ in a different way. In Baptism, we become children of God and sharers in Jesus mission. In Confirmation, we receive a second character, which strengthens us to proclaim Christ publically (CCC, #1304). In Holy Orders, a man is consecrated to the service of Christ and the Church. The Father set his seal on Christ (John 6:27) and we are sealed in Christ (2 Corinthians 1:22). It is a sign that the one baptized, confirmed, and ordained bears a special and unique relationship to Christ. This indelible seal remains even in a person not in the state of grace or who has lost faith. Church Feasts and Memorials October 16 - Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, Virgin October 17 - Saint Ignatius of Antioch, Bishop, Martyr October 18 - Saint Luke, Evangelist October 19 - Saints John de Brébeuf and Isaac Jogues, Priests and Companions, Martyrs (USA) October 20 - Saint Paul of the Cross, Priest C M Y K

6 6 SAVE THE DATE!! November 1 - All Saints Day (Mass Times: 8am & 7pm) November 2 - All Souls Day November 5 - Altar Society Turkey Dinner/GH November 12 - ND Band Parents Pancake Breakfast SAFE ENVIRONMENT PROGRAM NEXT GROUP SESSION: NOV.7,2017 at 6:30pm in the ST. JOSEPH ROOM. RSVP: Tammy DuBose-Coordinator of Volunteers, Creating a safe environment for children, youth, and vulnerable adults is a priority in the Catholic Diocese of Fort Worth. In the words of Bishop Olson, We share a great responsibility to understand the nature of abuse and the steps we must take to establish and maintain safe, holy, and faithaffirming environments. The requirement for in-depth renewal is designed to safe guard children and young people and to protect all members of the diocesan community in parishes, schools, and ministries. Our Safe Environment Program mandates that all clergy, religious men and women, lay employees, and adult volunteers, prior to beginning their service in the Diocese, meet three requirements: 1. Satisfactorily pass a criminal background check at the beginning of their service and every three years thereafter; and, 2. Satisfactorily complete training regarding the safe environment policy, procedures and practices at the beginning of their service and every three years thereafter; and, 3. Provide consent stating you will abide by the Code of Conduct and Behavior Standards for All Clergy, Religious and Lay Ministers for as long as they remain in service to the Diocese. Each Safe Environment Training is good for 3 years. While many of you are still under the 3 year umbrella, some of you do need to re-take the course. I would like to thank all who have recently completed the Safe and Sacred Session on-line training. I appreciate your commitment in helping to protect our children and vulnerable adults. Please contact me if you think your training has elapsed and/or I will be contacting you after checking with the various ministries. CATHOLIC CHARITIES At Catholic Charities, we believe it is possible to end poverty. It s going to take all of us doing our part to make a change and we have unique opportunities for anyone inspired by our mission. Our volunteers are our hands and feet. They move our mission forward and make it possible to meet the needs of our community. Their work is what brings us closer to putting an end to poverty. We have several volunteer positions to fit your talents, schedule and preferences. Volunteer positions are open to anyone looking to give back. Please consider joining our team. We are currently seeking reception and client intake volunteers from all faith and cultural backgrounds. Bilingual Spanish is a plus! Please contact Heather Walker at or hwalker@ccdofw. org for more information or to sign up to volunteer.
