In the words of Bishop Olson, We share a great responsibility to understand the nature of abuse and the steps we must take to establish and maintain safe, holy, and faith-affirming environments. The requirement for in-depth renewal is designed to safe guard children and young people and to protect all members of the diocesan community in parishes, schools, and ministries. Our Safe Environment Program mandates that all clergy, religious men and women, lay employees, and adult volunteers, prior to beginning their service in the Diocese, meet three requirements: 1. Satisfactorily pass a criminal background check at the beginning of their service and every three years thereafter; and, 2. Satisfactorily complete training regarding the safe environment policy, procedures and practices at the beginning of their service and every three years thereafter; and, 3. Provide consent stating you will abide by the Code of Conduct and Behavior Standards for All Clergy, Religious and Lay Ministers for as long as they remain in service to the Diocese. Each Safe Environment Training is good for 3 years. While many of you are still under the 3 year umbrella, some of you do need to re-take the course. I would like to thank all who have recently completed the Safe and Sacred Session on-line training. I appreciate your commitment in helping to protect our children and vulnerable adults. Please contact me if you think your training has elapsed and/or I will be contacting you after checking with the various ministries. If a computer is not available to you, please call me at the church office and we can provide online training here (By Appointment Only). Thank you so much for your gift of volunteering and time. 4 4 Intentions of Holy Father, Pope Francis JULY - Lapsed Christians. This conference is open to everyone and is bilingual. November 5, 2017 Arlington Convention Center 1200 Ballpark Way (Arlington, Texas) For more information visit: vencuentro.org USHERS NEEDED! The Usher Ministry is in need of ushers for Sunday 8:30am masses. Please call Tammy at the Church Office at (940) and she will direct you to the Ministry contact person. Prayer Ministry Team is available after weekend Mass in the Holy Family Chapel to pray for your personal Intentions. Please enter through the entrance across the Saint Joseph Room. The Holy Family Chapel is Open Monday through Friday from 8am until 4:30pm. Everyone is invited to visit the Chapel for some quiet prayer time or simply to reflect how God has blessed you. Come and ask Him of the plans He has for your Life, and then spend some time listening. Prayer is an aspiration of the heart, it is a simple glance directed to heaven, it is a cry of gratitude and love in the midst of trial as well as joy; finally, it is something great, supernatural, which expands my soul and unites me to Jesus. Come join us as we pray, explore Scripture together and support one another in our Christian walk. Meet us in the Parish Office Conference Room each Saturday (except 2nd Saturday of the month) at 7:30 AM. Please call Jack at if you have questions. Dear Padre What should Jesus look like? When people close their eyes and imagine the person of Jesus, no two images are exactly the same. Our images of Jesus are usually the result of our cultural influences and experiences. When I imagine Jesus, I often call to mind a picture of Jesus that was on one of my first holy cards. GROWING IN FAITH Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time (A) Zec 9:9-10, Rom 8:9, 11-13, Mt 11:25-30 Humble souls have a special ability to see things. We exclaim, Out of the mouth of babes when kids say the darnedest (and most profound) things (Matthew 21:16 and Psalm 8:2-3). What their uncluttered minds can catch and express with blatant honesty can be refreshing and funny. With recent archeological investigation, combined with the work of medical artists who are often called to testify as forensic witnesses in capital murder trials, and finally starting with the assumption that Jesus resembled a typical peasant from first-century Palestine, some clues may have emerged. According to experts like Richard Neave, Jesus was possibly a person with a broad peasant s face, dark olive skin, short curly hair, and a prominent nose. His height would have been on the order of 5 feet 1 inch and he would have weighed about 110 pounds. Of course, all of this is unnecessary speculation. What is important in matters of faith is not this level of detail but what is expressed and celebrated by the Church that Jesus became man, born of the Virgin Mary, and we are all offered a share in the divinity of Christ. Fr. Tom Santa, CSsR Sundaybulletin@Liguori.org Jesus enjoys this simplicity as well. He rejoices because, while the wise and the learned have rejected his preaching and mighty deeds, the childlike have embraced them. They are not afraid of the implications; they simply are amazed, impressed, and accept that no one but God could do such things. Perhaps this is why angels are often painted like little children! Jesus can speak of heavenly mysteries because he is the Son. The Father and he are one and share in the fullness of knowledge. Christ sits in glory surrounded by cherubs and angels, yet comes down to reveal what the Father has given him. Let s embrace all of his revealed word with childlike faith and not just pick and choose what suits us. Another characteristic of little children is unending energy. It comes partly from their age but also endures because they don t waste energy worrying or thinking about things they cannot control. They don t plan, project, or prioritize. For Reflection How can I yoke myself to Jesus, my Lord and king? What burdens, stressors, or disappointments can I hand over to God this week? Fr. Mark Haydu, LC Why do Catholics do that? Why is the Church referred to as She or Her? Imagery and symbolism help describe Christ s relationship to the body of believers known as the Church. For example, the Church is called Christ s pure bride (2 Corinthians 11:2). St. John wrote of the Church as the New Jerusalem, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband (Revelation 21:2). The Church is also a mother. Because we receive the life of faith through the Church, she is our mother (Catechism of the Catholic Church, #169). Through baptism, we become her children. Are Catholics required to wear scapulars? Originally, scapulars were part of the religious habit worn by members of certain orders. The smaller scapular worn by lay people consists of two small squares of fabric worn on the chest and back connected by strings. The most common scapular is the Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. According to one tradition, the Blessed Mother appeared to St. Simon Stock, a Carmelite monk, in Cambridge, England, on July 16, Our Lady gave the scapular to him as a sign of her favor for the Carmelite Order and promised that whoever wore the brown scapular until death would not suffer the fires of Hell, be preserved in time of danger, and experience peace and protection. Any Catholic can wear the scapular if desired, but it must be blessed by a priest to be a sacramental. The scapular is worn under the clothes. It is worn continuously (except during bathing or swimming). For Catholics who wear it, it is a reminder of Mary s motherly love and intercession. C M Y K
