3 January 8, WORSHIP NOTES TODAY Today marks the first Sunday of Epiphany. Epiphany begins on January 6 th, following the Twelve days of Christmas and is the highpoint of the Advent/Christmas season. The term epiphany means "to show" or "to make known" or even "to reveal": it remembers the coming of the wise men bringing gifts to visit the Christ child, who by so doing "reveal" Jesus to the world as Lord and King. The first Sunday of Epiphany generally focuses on the baptism of Jesus, and so, Pastor Daniel will be preaching from Matthew 3:13-17, Jesus baptism. This passage shows Jesus turning the tables on people's expectations. Jesus asks to be baptized by John, demonstrating his deep humility. Jesus didn't come to be served but instead to serve, giving us a model for servanthood. Jesus' baptism inaugurates his earthly ministry, which is why this passage is often used at Epiphany, the "revealing" of Jesus Christ, who is (as the voice from heaven affirms) God's Son. We also look forward to the Celebration of the Lord s Supper as we receive the bread and cup, remembering and celebrating God s gift of salvation and His ongoing work in our lives. NEXT WEEK Jesus, early on in His earthly ministry, demonstrated very clearly that His purpose was to seek and save the lost, to associate with and minister to those who were spiritually lost. He ate with the castoffs of society, spending time with those who knew their need for God, rather than those who were smug in their own self-righteousness. Pastor Duane will be leading us through Mark 2:13-17, the account of Jesus calling Levi, the tax collector and eating with sinners

5 January 8, Any concern too small to be turned into a prayer is too small to be made into a burden. PRAYER MATTERS ~ Corrie Ten Boom Janna O was readmitted into the Palmerston Hospital for further monitoring. We pray for Janna s recovery and that she might return home again soon. John K received a feeding tube so that he might gain strength to undergo further testing. John remains at the Fergus hospital. We continue to pray for God s healing hand upon John, and for His peace to surround John during this time. Joyce K continues to reside at Parkwood Rehab Centre in London. If you would like to contact Joyce. We lift 4 yr. old Jakob K in prayer as he undergoes chemo and radiation treatments for Wilms Tumour (Nephroblastoma). Please pray for the Sr. Youth as they attend their Winter Retreat Jan They will be discussing God's design for relationships and sexuality. Pray for safe travels, good conversations, and a fun weekend. Our prayers are coveted for those for whom the winter months are long and wearying. 7 January 8, Announcements Men's Life breakfast and Bible study has started up again. The Drayton group meets for breakfast and Bible study in the church Fellowship Hall on Saturdays at 9 a.m. The Tiviotdale group meets at the Tiviotdale Truck Stop on Fridays at 9 a.m. Drayton will continue studying Acts; Tiviotdale will be studying Philippians. The more, the merrier! If you have questions, please contact Pastor Daniel. DRC Photo Directory We are looking to compile a new church photo directory. In order to complete this, we need your help. We would like you to submit a current portrait style photograph of your family. Alternately, if you would like us to take your family photograph, we will have a portrait studio set-up in room 9 of the church basement. There are sign-up lists outside of the sanctuary for those who would like to book a portrait time (photography starting on Sunday, January 15 th and continuing the next six Sundays). We are also seeking out photos for the "church life" pages in the new directory; if you have pictures you are able to share related to activities of the church, please send them in as well. All photographs can be sent to Anja N or left in Anja's mail slot. A variety of photo submissions would be ideal; however there are no guarantees that all submissions will make the final product.
