3 Pastor s Notes Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother. Mark 3:35 We are members of one family in Christ. We are named as such in our Baptism into Creator, Savior, and Spirit; given the gifts to live out this identity in Confirmation; and offered food for the journey in our Communion with the Body and Blood of Christ. These three sacraments name us and send us with a mission. They do not entitle us to special privileges or free us from responsibility. Quite the opposite, they invite us more deeply into the will of God, to create a more just world through sacraments and worship, learning, and service. Jesus insists to any who would draw sharp lines between who belongs and who does not, that doing the will of God, whatever our stated creed, is what makes us members of the family of Jesus. This weekend, parishioners of all ages set aside some time to reach out in service to those in need in our immediate community and beyond. They stock food pantry shelves, spend time with the other-abled, sort donations, reorganize library books, pray for those being held in detention centers, and create a greater sense of home for those transitioning out of homelessness and a home base for those who remain homeless. They experience once again that, in reaching out to others in loving kindness, we often receive gifts more precious than the ones we give. In becoming more aware of our blessings and the needs of others, we often discover their blessings and our needs. We are drawn deeper into the family of Christ to which we belong. Thank you to Mary Freeman, our parish Community Outreach Coordinator and to all Service Day Team Leaders and volunteers. Thanks to all who participate throughout the year in ministries of service, whether in the parish or in the local and broader community. Thank you to our teachers, catechists, and volunteers who help our children and our Quest youth experience and come to appreciate service as an essential component of who we are as disciples of Jesus. God continues to bless us: in what we do to reach out to others and in what we receive from them in turn. This week we enter another summer of construction. Those of you who populate the west transept on Sundays again will have to make your way there from the north and east doors while our new courtyard between the church and school is being created. Those who use the gym will have to find other spaces while the gym lobby receives updated, accessible restrooms and a glass wall to allow those unable to use the balcony stairs to watch sports activities from the vestibule. Thank you to all generous donors to the Capital Campaign whose sacrifices make all this possible. God bless you! Summer Peace, Scripture Reflection Today s passage gives us a rather unique perspective on the identity of Jesus vis-à-vis his contemporaries. Often we are so imbued with stories from other gospels and preaching from years of attending Mass, that it can be challenging to hear a gospel story on its own terms, unencumbered by other material. But today s gospel story on its own terms, unencumbered by other material. But today s gospel reminds us that Jesus did not have it easy. Are we expecting the same? Today self-righteous Christians may think they are persecuted for their faith when in fact they might simply be obnoxious. Jesus was misunderstood not because of obnoxious behavior, aloofness, or one-upmanship, but because he enjoyed the company of sinners. He ate with those who were considered of ill repute. He engaged those who were said to be with demons. He did not fast but enjoyed great dinner parties. His behavior embarrassed his family and those who preferred cultural norms that kept certain people on the margins. It s one thing to admire Jesus. It s quite another to act as he did. Many of us are admirers of Jesus. But do I act as he did? Am I willing to face embarrassment to do what he did?

7 Welcome To Our New School Board Members Michael Fitzpatrick~My wife Helen and I have been parishioners of St. Francis Xavier since moving to LaGrange in We have been blessed with four children: Henry (entering 4 th grade in August), Charles (entering 2 nd grade in August), Frances (2), and Collins (almost 1). Our youngest has arthrogryposis, but he has achieved pronounced improvement during his first eleven months through therapy and other interventions. We are hopeful he will be able to attend SFX like his siblings, and be a member of the Class of Helen and I have made great friends through the school mainly through our children, of course. We are very happy here, and we especially appreciate all the love, prayers, and support we received when Collins was born. I grew up in Beverly and attended Christ the King, St. Ignatius, University of Illinois, and University of Virginia Law School. I am a patent judge for the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office. Although SFX faces some of the same financial challenges shared by many Catholic schools, it has thrived under past and present leadership. I applied to serve on the school advisory board because I want to help SFX continue to thrive. I appreciate all the hard work that already has been done by others to provide my children the opportunities they enjoy at SFX. I am honored to be entrusted to serve on the school advisory board and hope to ensure the same opportunities for your children. I view Catholic education as critical not only to educating our children but also to passing on our Catholic heritage. Katy Newcomb~My husband, Andy, and I have been parishioners since we moved into LaGrange in Our three children, Dailey (Class of 2018), Tommy (7 th ) and Joey (5 th ) have attended the SFX day school since Kindergarten, and we have enjoyed being a part of the Falcon community. I grew up in Joliet and attended St. Paul the Apostle Grade School, Joliet Catholic High School, and the University of Notre Dame. I began teaching at St. Patrick High School in Chicago and after 2 years, moved to Lyons Township High School, where I met my husband, also a social studies teacher, in 1999 and have continued to teach for the past 21 years. As a working parent, I have always appreciated the social and volunteer network at SFX that makes our school and parish so special and has certainly made me feel welcome and connected. I have enjoyed coaching cheer (and my husband basketball), teaching art smart, helping with the talent show and Cub Scouts. SFX school and parish works only with the efforts of countless volunteers who love and feel a part of our Falcon community. SFX has meant so much to my family, and I am grateful to be able to serve as a member of the School Advisory board. I hope to offer the perspective of a high school educator and parent to help SFX continue to provide a foundation in faith, service and learning for every student. James Ward~My wife Kim and I moved to LaGrange this past November and joined St. Francis Xavier. Christmas Day was the first mass our newborn baby Paige attended as she was one month old at the time. We have been so impressed by the warm welcoming met by both the St. Francis parishioners and greater LaGrange community. Prior to moving to LaGrange we lived in the Lincoln Park/Lakeview neighborhoods where we were active parishioners at St. Clement. I grew up in Orland Park and attended Carl Sandburg High School, Illinois State University, and the Notre Dame's Mendoza School of Business. I have spent most of my career in the financial services industry, currently at Guggenheim Partners where I have been the past 5 years. As hobbies, I enjoy playing basketball, enjoying time with our dog Amora, and spending summer weekends in Michigan. My passion for education, the catholic faith, and camaraderie in the community drew me to this role. My hope is that I can carry on the great tradition of St. Francis as the previous advisory board and parents have before me. Please do not hesitate to introduce yourself as I look forward to meeting you all. Pat Zahren~My wife Jordan and I, as well as our new 4-month old son Finn (born in January 2018), recently became residents of LaGrange (June 2017) and parishioners of St. Francis Xavier. We are thoroughly enjoying our new life together in LaGrange, as well as the vibrant St. Francis Xavier community. I grew up primarily in Pittsburgh, PA, and lived briefly in South Bend, IN as a child, and attended St. Teresa School, St. Joseph School, Marian and North Allegheny High School(s). I also attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio for my undergraduate studies, and recently received a Masters in Human Resources from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Professionally, I am an organizational design and change management consultant within Deloitte s Human Capital Consulting practice. Prior to joining Deloitte, I held a variety of Human Resources roles for several Fortune 500 companies. Outside of work, I have always been very active in the community. I served as a youth basketball coach for four years at a catholic grade school in the city of Chicago (St. Josaphat), and I ve sat on the board of the local chapter of a global charity (The American Ireland Fund) for the past 5 years. My hope, in fulfilling this school advisory board role at SFX, is that I can help ensure all SFX students, present and future, will enjoy a truly top-notch educational experience in their schooling.
