3 Pastor s Notes On this Sunday we celebrate the feast of Pentecost, which is for ourselves the conclusion of the Easter Season and the beginning of the regular time of the church. It is the celebration of our being filled with the Spirit of God and being sent into the world as a Spirit filled people. The Risen Jesus said to the disciples several times, Be not Afraid, which is our message as well. Do not be afraid of the unimaginable goodness of God that is present to us, do not fear the darkest moment of life or the greatest sin we may know The Spirit of God is always with us. The Risen Lord Jesus is embedded deep within our souls, and will never let us be taken away. We will doubt, we will stray, we will obsess, but we will always be in the presence of God. This is our sustenance and our gift to others God s grace is given to all enabling everyone to change our world for the better. This is the great insight, the revelation that St. Ignatius had and that compelled him to send St Francis Xavier to foreign countries to Go and set the world on fire! If the only thing we do in our lives is to let others know of God s grace and unconditional love, most often through our example, our living, we have heard the message and we have shared it. bers of our School Board, Dave Duffy, Marcy Fitzpatrick, Meg Miles and Jeff Olson. Welcome and thank you for your willingness to serve the students and our school in this way. And thank you to those of you who were willing to become members of the Board. Our hope is that we can receive from your generosity in other ways as you consider giving of your time and talent in different needs of our Day School. Very Special Thanks to Michele Buhle, the current President of the Board, to Paul Filbin, Paul Huston and Moira Madell, all four of them finishing their three year commitment to the efforts of the Board. There have been several exciting things and some challenging that have happened during their tenure and they have served with great commitment, ability and conviction. Once again, school parents stepping forward offering generously of their time and talent, helping to make our school the Blue Ribbon School that it is! Did you hear about Daniel, age 9, and his insight into angels? Angels talk all the way while they re flying you up to heaven. The main subject is where you went wrong before you got dead. You probably already know that there are four new mem ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Scripture Reflection In fear and in joy, Peace be with you. Jesus said it twice: Peace be with you. He said it first to the disciples behind locked doors, fearing the leaders would find and persecute them. He said it again as they rejoiced in recognizing him. This Pentecost, and every day that lies ahead, can we receive the Peace of Christ, even when we are fearful, or hurt, or angry, or guilt ridden or? Episcopal Rev. Barbara Brown Taylor speaks about the difference between fear and belief in book The Preaching Life. Fear is a small cell with no air in it and no light. It is suffocating inside, and dark. There is no room to turn around there is no future. Everything is over. Everything is past. Tomorrow is as far away as the moon. She goes on to say that people may stop by, tap on your walls, and try and help you out, but you are too afraid to let them help. Belief, she goes on to say, is more like a rope bridge over a scenic gorge sturdy, but swinging back and forth, with plenty of light and plenty of air but precious little to hang on to except the stories you have heard: that it is the best and only way across, that it is possible, that it will bear your weight. All you have to do is believe in the bridge more than you believe in the gorge. Fortunately, you do not have to believe in it all by yourself. Others have already crossed the bridge, and you can talk to them as you step into the air, putting one food ahead of the other, just that: just one step at a time. She concludes: It takes a lot of courage to be a human being, but if Jesus was who he said we was, the bridge will hold. The Peace of Christ is always ours to embrace. Sometimes, we can simply rest in it. Other times, especially when the going gets rough, it seems very far away. When fear sets in, it may take time to reclaim that Peace. That s O.K. It s a process. Just know you are not alone. When I am afraid, I sometimes imagine being on that rope bridge, and invite Jesus to join me. We ve stood there in silence. We ve had conversations overlooking the gorge. We ve even watched the sun rise. Things may still be tough when that prayer time ends, but somehow the load seems just a little lighter. Peace be with you.

4 Needed Attention Teens Opportunities To Be of Service to Your Parish Teens, are you in need of community service hours? Or better yet, would you just like to be of service to your Parish? The maintenance department is looking for volunteers to help with the washing and moving of school chairs and desks and other light duties during our summer clean up of the Education Building. Another volunteer is needed to scrape and repaint the St. Vincent de Paul donation boxes. St. Vincent de Paul Donation Drop Boxes Thank you for allowing our drop boxes to be on church property. During the last few years donations have picked up, so have the items that we do not accept. Please only place clothing, linens and shoes into the drop boxes. Thank you very much! Please call Clara Jurivich at the Rectory, to volunteer on any weekdays during the month of June. Or would you simply like to be of service to your Parish? We are looking for a few volunteers to help with the scraping and painting of the garbage enclosure and the St. Vincent de Paul boxes. If you are willing and able to help, please contact Business Manager, Clara Jurivich at cjurivich@sfxlg.org or call Ushers Ushers are needed for the 12:00 pm Mass each Sunday. This ministry is very rewarding. It is a great way for individuals to meet and interact with members of our St. Francis Xavier family. Usher responsibilities include greeting and seating parishioners as they enter the church, handling collections, directing parishioners for Communion and handing out the Bulletin as parishioners are departing after mass has completed. If you are interested in joining this ministry, please contact Joseph Discipio at or at jadiscipio20@att.net. Habitat We have a team leaving on Saturday, July 12 for a week in Clarksdale, Mississippi. This team is in need of a cook for the week. Good News if you are interested, you will be working in air conditioning all week! You'll be cooking for a team of approximately 20 very appreciative volunteers. If you would like to know more about what's involved, please contact Bill Stauffer, by phone at or wcstauffer@sbcglobal.net. Become A Knight Did you know that the LaGrange Council of the Knights of Columbus has been active right here in your community for over 40 years? We raise money for SPRED and Helping Hand and other good causes. We collect coats and food for people in need. We visit and entertain the residents of Bethlehem Woods. We sponsor spelling bees and essay contests for your school. We pray together for people in need of prayer. But we have needs, too. We need new members and new ideas. We need men who don't just think the community can be better, but are prepared to do something about it. We need YOU. We are proud of our history and committed to the future. Part of that future is the recruitment of more men who are willing to act upon their Catholic values for the benefit of their families and communities. The mission goes on and new Knights are needed to continue the good works and create new happy memories in the tradition of the Knights. 5 Second Collection for Retired Priests This weekend, we will take up a second collection for the Retired Priests of the Archdiocese. When priests retire from pastoral responsibilities, they remain ordained priests, configured through the Sacrament of Holy Orders to Christ, the head of his Body, the Church. Priests are not employees; they are fathers in Christ and brothers to all. Retired priests celebrate Mass and sacraments in hundreds of parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago. Their dedicated service enables many parishes to avoid reducing the number of Masses celebrated each weekend. Some retired priests are called upon to be temporary administrators of parishes. Our senior priests do this willingly as a continuation of the many years that they have faithfully served our Church. The Priests Retirement and Mutual Aid Association (PRMAA) cares for our retired priests. Again this year, we have seen the cost of health care, prescription drugs, and nursing home care increase. In addition, the priests pension fund remains seriously impacted by the economic downturn. This special collection will help us continue to support our retired priests. Please be as generous as you are able. WE GATHER IN FAITH WE GIVE WITH LOVE CAPITAL CAMPAIGN MYSTERY PLEDGES Your Parish Finances Sunday Collection, June 1 $ 26,915 This week last year $ 27,271 Total Collection: Year-to-date $ 1,659,132 Previous year-to-date $ 1,651,106 Needed for Budget: Year-to-date $ 1,689,225 As we approach the end of the fiscal year, collections are running about $30,000 behind budget. Please consider helping with this shortfall if you are able. An increasing number of parishioners are participating in our Electronic Offering Program. Once or twice per month, per your directive, funds can be automatically drawn from your checking or savings account. This approach saves the Parish both administrative effort and the cost of envelopes. Please consider this option. Sign-up forms are available at the back of Church or on-line. Please contact Jane Bandyk, Parish Accountant if you have any questions. Many thanks to all who have returned their Letters of Intent for the We Gather in Faith We Give with Love Capital Campaign. Parish Accountant, Jane Bandyk has been processing your intentions and Father John has been busy sending out letters expressing our great appreciation of your support. We are feeling very badly because we have not been able to acknowledge three pledges, two of which were received some time ago: A pledge made 3/16/14 for a one time gift in the amount of $5,000 to be made on 12/31/14. Unfortunately, we are not able to read the signature on the pledge form and no name was printed. A pledge form dropped in the collection basket on 3/19/14 for a pledge in the amount of $5,000 with payments to be made monthly. Unfortunately, no signature or name was included on the form. And more recently, a pledge dated 5/21/14 in the amount of $5,000 to be fulfilled through a one time charge to a credit card. While all the necessary card numbers and expiration dates were provided, there is no signature or name on the form. We cannot process this payment without a name. If you can help us solve any of these mysteries, please stop into the Rectory at your convenience and ask for Jane Bandyk, Parish Accountant. Alternatively, you can Jane at jbandyk@sfxlg.org. Thanks for your consideration! Annual Catholic Appeal 2014 Typically at this time of year we are invited to participate in the Cardinal s Annual Catholic Appeal, either through a direct mail solicitation or through an invitation from Father John at a Sunday Mass. Please know that St. Francis Xavier is exempt from participating in the Annual Catholic Appeal in 2014 as we are undertaking our own Capital Campaign. You will be hearing a lot more about the Capital Campaign in the weeks to come. In addition to exciting projects and enhancements at our own Parish, this Campaign will include a component of outreach to St. Agatha and Ascension St. Susanna, two parishes which are amongst the many that benefit from the Annual Catholic Appeal each year. Of course, if you wish to respond to the direct mail solicitation for the Annual Catholic Appeal, please do so. Please know, however, that locally we will not be asking you to support the Annual Catholic Appeal in 2014.

9 Congratulations Alia Abiad St. Francis Xavier Parishioner Religious Ed 2014 Graduate Scripps National Spelling Bee FINALIST!!!!! CHICAGO TRIBUNE All content herein is 2014 Girl savors her nearly letterperfect performance Western Springs teen places 5th in national spelling bee Sunday, June 1, 2014 Source: By Dawn Rhodes, Tribune reporter Illustration: Photo(s) Caption: Photo: Alia Abiad, 14, of Western Springs, competes in the Scripps National Spelling Bee finals. She tied for fifth place. CHUCK MYERS/MCT PHOTO Alia Abiad didn't expect to make the cut for the finals in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. But the Western Springs eighth grader and her supporters got a thrilling shock when Alia's was the last name announced as one of the final 12 contestants to spell it out for the queen of all bees. "When he said Western Springs, we just went berserk," said McClure Junior High School Principal Dan Chick, whose students watched Alia in action all week. "We're just over the moon and so proud of her." Alia, 14, finished in a tie for fifth place Thursday night, when Sriram Hathwar, of New York, and Ansun Sujoe, of Texas, became the first cochampions in 52 years. "I feel great and thankful and surprised and fulfilled and happy," Alia said Friday. Competing in her second national spelling bee, Alia correctly spelled "fete," "sultana," "concinnate" and "misere" on stage to earn her place in the finals. She then correctly spelled "quebrada," "collyrium," "bunuelo" and "brindisi" before missing "irbis" to finish in a tie for fifth. Alia tied for 19th place in the 2013 bee. "It was a superlong day but it was a great day. We are extremely proud," said Lorraine Abiad, Alia's mother. "It was nerve wracking, but we're very thrilled to have come this far. I'm just very proud of Alia and how she held up so well under pressure." The teenager grinned slightly nearly every time she stepped up to the microphone, a sign that she recognized the word given to her. But when she heard "irbis," a Russian word with Mongol roots meaning "snow leopard," her confident, braces laden smile turned into a grimace. "When I heard it, I thought it might be over because they finally gave me a word that I didn't know," Alia said. "Everyone is going to get a word that they don't recognize, but you just have to puzzle through it, and who knows, you might get it." Back home, Alia had plenty of support, with a live feed showing at McClure, where teachers and students followed Alia's progress. They were even watching during the eighthgrade dance Thursday night while Alia was on stage for the finals. "They said they had a screen showing me, so every time I spelled they'd stop dancing to watch," Alia said, chuckling. "Then they sent me videos of them at the dance. It was awesome and it made me feel great." The Illinois semifinalists included Alia; Christine Alex, 13, of Chicago; Meghana Kamineni, 13, of Lockport; Lucas Urbanski, 14, of Crystal Lake; and Yasir Hasnain, 13, of Forsyth. All four of Alia's cohorts finished in a tie for 13th place.

10 Immersion Mission Trip Our own Youth Minister, Emily Brabham is among this group of six pilgrims who left the United States for an immersion mission trip to Nairobi, Kenya, May 31 June 17. They will be immersed in the lives of faithful Kenyans struggling for life and dignity in informal settlements (i.e. slums) of the capital city. Please keep them in your prayers as they leave the comforts of home to give and receive God s love in Nairobi. Pictured here with Emily are pilgrims Christina Bax, Nallely Dimas, Kate Floros, Lorena Reyes, Jessica Santiago, and Mission Office Director, Edwin Rondán. I am going to Nairobi on this mission immersion experience for two reasons. First, I want to embrace another culture and people of faith. I hope to learn and grow in my faith through each encounter. Second, I hope to share my faith, both with my fellow missioners and with the people we encounter. I hope to be part of the new evangelization simply by being present to and receiving the witness of the faith of my brothers and sisters in Nairobi. KITCHEN ANGELS The Kitchen Angels are a group of parishioners who help people by bringing meals to their homes. The Kitchen Angels have been in existence for many years, yet there are many people who are relatively new to the parish and do not know about them. If you know of a person or a family who could use some meals, or if you are interested in becoming a Kitchen Angel, please call Susie Lehuta at How could anyone ever tell you, You were anything less than beautiful? How could anyone ever tell you, You were less than whole? How could anyone fail to notice that your loving is a miracle? How deeply you re connected to my soul? Libby Roderick from CD If You See A Dream According to the U.S. State Department, 600,000 to 800,000 people are trafficked across international borders every year. More than 70 percent are female and half are children. In the U.S. the average age a teen enters as a sex slave is 12 to 14 years old. Human trafficking is one of the fastest growing criminal enterprises because it holds relatively low risk with high profit potential. Criminal organizations are increasingly attracted to human trafficking because, unlike drugs, humans can be sold repeatedly. There are approximately 20 to 30 million slaves in the world today; globally, the average cost of a slave is $90. A human trafficker can earn 20 times what he or she paid for a girl. provided the girl was not physically brutalized to the point of ruining her beauty, the pimp could sell her again for a greater price because he had trained her and broken her spirit, which saves future buyers the hassle. A 2003 study in the Netherlands found that, on average, a Single sex slave earned her pimp at least $250,000 a year. Possible Response: Writing or calling one legislator, whether state or federal, in behalf of a change in law, policy, or available services. God of justice, Awaken our hearts and deepen our commitment to work for a world where every person is free and able to live with dignity and freedom. We pray for ourselves that we will have the courage to work for the transformation of a culture that tolerates degrading and abusive behavior that accepts personal and corporate greed as a fundamental dynamic in society. We ask this in the name of Jesus and in the power of your Spirit. Amen. CSJ 2014 Assembly, HOPE RISING SFX Peace and Justice Committee will not meet until September. Any questions please contact Sr. Dorothy St. Vincent De Paul Society The St. Vincent de Paul Society s meeting take place on the first Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in the Rectory Courtyard Room.
