The word maundy comes from the Latin word mandatum which means to command. It refers to the command Jesus gave his disciples that evening in Jerusalem: Do this in remembrance of me - Luke 22:19. The cross has been made from the Christmas tree, representing the symbolic transition from Christ s birth to his death and resurrection. EASTER BREAKFAST: 8 am April 5. 4 INA HUBBARD SCHOLARSHIP A scholarship in memory of Ina Hubbard was established in She was an active member of our church from She was 105 years old when she died at Rose Villa Retirement Community. Ina s legacy was to financially help students to further their education. The students need to be members of First Baptist Church, Springfield. If you are attending or planning to attend an accredited community college, university or college (however, not graduate school), you may be eligible to receive an Ina Hubbard Scholarship. If you are interested in applying, pick up a scholarship packet from one of the following scholarship committee members: John Paskey, Betsy Clewett, Pat Harms, and Debbie Herr. The application packet must be completed on or before April 30, Barnabas Award Nominations Now Being Received! There was a Levite, a native of Cyprus, Joseph, to whom the apostles gave the name Barnabas (which means son of encouragement ). He sold a field that belonged to him, then brought the money, and laid it at the apostles feet. (Acts 4:36,37) The name Barnabas means son of encouragement. It was a nickname given to Joseph by the leaders of the church in recognition of his generous and loving character. The Barnabas Award recognizes persons who, following Barnabas example, have given themselves consistently and compassionately to Encouraging Our Life Together at FBCS. Perhaps you have noticed a Barnabas in our midst. If so, you are encouraged to nominate that person! As you contemplate possible recipients of this award, please consult the Book of Acts and note the ways Barnabas lived into his name by loving others and encouraging unity in the community of faith. (See such passages as Acts 9:1-31, 11:19ff, and 15:1-41). To nominate someone, pick up a form in the Gathering Room on any Sunday, list the person s name on the form and describe their contributions to our life together. RETURN COMPLETED NOMINATION FORMS TO PASTOR JEFF NO LATER THAN MAY 1st The 2015 Barnabas Award will be presented on Sunday, May 17, 2015, during the FBCS Celebration of Life Together

5 150th Anniversary Celebration This year we will be celebrating 150 years as the First Baptist Church of Springfield. The task force for planning recognition throughout the year is seeking your help. 6 For Your Health For Your Health Heath Concerns for Men and Women by Gail Engle Heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure are to be watched. If you have heart disease in your family it is important to talk with your doctor on ways to control the cholesterol and blood pressure. When we are young we are invulnerable. We don't really begin to think of ourselves as human animals whose body will age and develop health problems until our 30s or 40s. Here are some very typical concerns of men and women in their 50's and 60's. Generally by the time we reach those ages we are aware that our body seems to get tired quicker and it takes more than a good night sleep to make us bounce back. So here are some lists in order of concern: MEN 1. Prostate cancer. 2. Heart disease risks including high blood pressure and high cholesterol. 3. Erectile dysfunction. 4. Diabetes. 5. Stroke. WOMEN 1. Breast cancer. 2. Heart disease, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. 3. Osteoporosis. 4. Menopause treatment options. 5. Weight management. 6. Diabetes. 7. Stroke. Some tips for health issues affecting men and women: As we age our metabolism slows down. This means that it is most important to eat smaller portions of meat, carbohydrates, cheese and larger portions of vegetables. Exercise becomes increasingly important to maintain mobility and flexibility. Exercise will help to prevent Diabetes 2 and other weight-related problems. Become familiar with the warning signs of stroke or TIAs If you or someone else develops numbness, tingling, confusion, balance problems, call 911. Men need to schedule a prostate screening which includes a PSA test and a digital exam (or rectal.) Do this annually. Also, erectile dysfunction can be an early warning sign of an impending heart attack or stroke. Women in their 30s can get a clinical breast exam at least every 3 years. After 40 it should be an annual test along with a mammogram. You should be performing a breast exam at home once a week. If there are changes see your doctor as soon as possible. Osteoporosis responds well to weight bearing exercise. Take calcium and vitamin D3 everyday. Menopause does bring change but talk to your doctor if symptoms become troublesome. Your doctor may discuss hormone replacement therapy so do some reading before hand so to know which questions to ask.

7 INTERNATIONAL MINISTRIES Adalia and Ray Schellinger-Gutierrez Dear friends, We are so thankful for you and all that you have done for Deborah's House! Without your generous support, this ministry would not be possible. Your faithful giving has meant the difference for all of our residents. In supporting us, you have helped to build much more than a temporary shelter for the 150+ families who have called Deborah s House their home over the last eight years. You have created a place where these women and children could find God s grace and love. You have given them the opportunity to escape horrific abuse and begin to build a new life, free of fear. Many have come to Tijuana personally as part of a mission team or as a volunteer. You have invested your hearts and lives in this ministry. Your presence has been a beautiful gift to our residents, and continues to inspire them. You have shared your gifts and talents, and spoken into their hearts a new message of love, grace and hope. They had been told their whole lives that they were worthless, and you exposed that lie for what it was, as you have given up so much to come to Tijuana just for them, and as you shared your love with them. Currently, we have 8 women and 18 children at the shelter. It seems that we have this regular cycle at the shelter, as a group of women arrive at the shelter at about the same time, work through their deep wounds to find healing, and then find the strength to move on to a new future together. As they arrive, they are often very hard on one another, but by the time they leave they are part of a family, and they continue to support each other, even though they are scattered across the city. We are still at the beginning stages with this current group of women. There are a lot of trials and much stress. As we write this, we are beginning to see signs of transformation among their relationships. We see some very beautiful expressions of grace and healing as they are finding the trust to begin new friendships and to forge a new family together. Running the shelter is a fairly expensive endeavor, and our budget is over $60,000 a year. This doesn't seem like much by US standards, especially considering it pays for four full time salaries, three part time seamstresses, and food, utilities, transportation, education and medical care for an average of 25 residents at a time. However, in this society, this is more than most people could imagine having to raise. Yet God always provides, and though our budget is tight, our residents have never gone hungry or thirsty. More than that, we have done our best to introduce to them a fountain, from which they can drink and never again be thirsty. We recognize that one incredible way God has provided has been through your sacrificial giving. Because of your generosity, this shelter has been able to serve its residents since October of 2006, and we hope and trust that it will continue to serve for many more years to come!! We also would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support to the World Mission Offering and to our dear colleagues working on behalf of God s kingdom in mission and ministry around the world. 8 Many THANKS for all of the various support and prayers that have helped us to make our mission trip to Deborah s House happen this Spring Break! We have brought in more than our fundraising goal, providing us with a reserve we can use to put toward next year s trip to Rainbow Acres. When we began this journey in September the costs and details seemed overwhelming, but at the time of this writing we are hours away from hitting the road for Tijuana! We are all very excited and looking forward to sharing with you all about our adventures, opportunities to share Christ s love on the road as well as with the families at Deborah s House, and about how God has spoken to us, used us, and shown Himself to us. We continue to meet on Wednesdays and Sunday mornings as much as we can. We also continue to be fundraising for our general funds as well as for future mission trip opportunities. If you have work to be done, don t be afraid to ask. We have also, for the time being, moved our monthly pancake breakfast fundraiser to the third Sunday of each month. This continues to be not just a fundraising opportunity but work/service experience as well as time to build community fellowship amongst the youth and the FBCS family. Please continue to keep us in your prayers as we bring our Deborah s House experiences home with us, that we would continue to be God s ambassadors wherever we go. Pray that we would be good stewards and faithfully fundraising and serving not just within FBCS but out in the community as well. Pray for a hunger for God s Word, for passionate desires to grow deeper in our faith. For faithful presence. Thank you.
