Large amounts of time has been allotted to caring for things that are normally done by others: CIA, bulletins, getting the website and system back up and running, organizing volunteers in the office. Several of you have contributed and your time and sharing of gifts has not gone unnoticed! What I noticed was how drained I felt from doing things that are not my vocation. I can do office management; I can do website creation or manage s, but what I was reminded of this month is while I can do them, those are not to what I am called. Shortly after seminary while I was preparing for my upcoming ordination exams (rigorous tests which show readiness for ministry). Apparently no one wanted to hire someone with a Master s degree for just any job. The bills began piling up, and I made the comment, I will dig ditches but I need a job. From that comment a friend got me connected with a business owner who would hire me. But it was true, I could (and would!) dig ditches for a paycheck, but that is not to what I am called. The word vocation comes from the Latin vocare or to call and means the work a person is called to by God. No matter where you are in your journey through life just beginning or farther down the road you have discovered there are many different voices calling you to any number of different kinds of work. The challenge is to discover which is the voice of God. The kind of work God calls you to do is the kind of work: That you need most to do That the world most needs to have done. It is possible to fulfill one and not the other, or vice-versa. And the work to which you are called is not necessarily the job for which you get paid sometimes it is, but not always. 2 My cousin was working for Halliburton before she entered John Hopkins for her graduate degree in International Business. While working at Halliburton, most Mondays she would enter the office tired and sore as if she hadn t rested on the weekends which was true. She hadn t rested. She worked every extra hour available, often with Habitat for Humanity. That was the work to which she was called. Another way to say this is by quoting Frederick Buechner: To what are YOU called? Where does YOUR desire to honor God let YOUR joy abound? There are many opportunities here at to put the gifts and abilities to work to God s glory. Pray. Seek God s guidance, and then put your efforts in a particular arena. Maybe after 6 months you decide wow, where has this been?! or this is not what I expected. The first answer is your vocation, your calling. The second response allows you to continue searching for where you are called. Both are good. One of the confessions held in high esteem in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) is the Westminster Catechism. The first question (and the most well-known) is What is the chief end of [humankind]? The answer: To glorify God and enjoy [God] forever. Find your vocation your calling, and let us get to work as disciples glorifying God. Rev. Jonathan Murray Rev. Together we will explore the life of discipleship Jesus Christ calls us to. Jesus said, Take up your cross and follow me. What does that look like in our every day living?
