Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another." ~ John 13:34 Well, we made it to Nebraska! It was a long road in a lot of ways. At times, I felt a little bit like Abraham, when God tells him to pick up his family and leave everything he knows and travel to some mystery land that God will show him when he gets there. Just pick up and go. So, that's what we did. When Chris or I thought of a welcoming community, it would be a community where strangers say hi and are generally polite. However, this is not what we found when we came here. Instead of moving to a land of foreigners, we moved to a land where our family was already well established, perhaps not biological relatives, but certainly family just the same. We were welcomed like the prodigal coming home, with open arms and the finest treatment. What a blessing! Jesus commands his disciples to love one another. As we are followers of Jesus, we are called to follow the example that Jesus lived. This is the starting point for all our interactions as Christians. Our job is to love one another. It's a big job and not always an easy one. Loving one another takes time and intentionality. You have certainly shown that love to us. It is my prayer that as we journey together in the coming years, that we might continue to grow in love, so that Broken Bow community will know this church as a group of believers overflowing with welcoming love who serve the Lord of love. 3 Fall Activities Starting Up!!! Here we are...september!!!! The summer months have flown by, school has already started up, and now it is time for all of our fall activities to also begin! Our Wednesday youth groups (Quigley s & PTFG) are scheduled to start on Wednesday, September 12th. The Quigley s kids will meet here at the church after school until 5:15pm, and our older kids, PTFG, will meet here every other Wednesday, at 6:30pm. The kids are always so hungry after school and/or practice and so we are grateful to everyone that has helped provide snacks and meals for them. If you are interested in providing a snack for the Quigley s kids or a meal for the PTFG kids, please just leave me a message or you are welcome to sign-up on the snack chart that is hanging on the elevator door. Also, starting September 9th, is our Continuing Education Class (formerly Sunday School) for our younger kids. We will meet at 9:00am in the blue classroom upstairs. It is going to be a wonderful, busy year!!!! How You Can Help Serve Our Church always needs Greeters, Ushers, Acolytes, Projectionist, and Liturgist to help with Sunday Worship. 4 Health Information with Amber Rogers Healthy Eating: Fruits and Veggies Matter September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness month and a focus on the health benefits of consuming fruits and vegetables. The Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion indicate that one in five children in the United States is obese, with the highest rates of obesity seen in adolescents. Obesity in children and adults increase the risk for the development of Type II diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. Children are impressionable and learn behaviors by watching their parents and other adults. As Christians we are always on stage teaching others by example and displaying outward acts of love and service that show our authenticity. What type of example are you setting? What does the bible say about obesity? Although the bible does not specifically mention obesity, it does encourage us to take care of our bodies. In 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 Paul states Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit. Are you abusing your temple by engaging in self-destructive, unhealthy habits? Be diligent this month to take care of your body and preserve your health by examining what you eat. Small changes in your eating habits can drastically improve your health and the health of your children. Consider the following strategies; Eat together as a family. Studies indicate that children who eat dinner with their families are less likely to be overweight, chose unhealthy foods and develop eating disorders. Adolescents that eat meals with their family are less likely to engage in risky behaviors such as smoking, drinking alcohol or using drugs. The effect of eating together as a family promotes talking, sharing of emotions, story-telling and gaining feedback which promotes healthy communication, better eating habits and an overall reduction in risky behaviors. Trick yourself into eating more veggies. Mix your veggies into soups and sauces: Frozen veggies such as peas or green beans can be added to chicken noodle soup. Chop up spinach and add to sauces or make your own vegetable soup. Serve veggies with dip: Serve broccoli, cucumbers or baby carrots with a low fat ranch dip or spread peanut butter on celery for an afternoon snack. Serve on sandwiches: Vegetables such as lettuce and tomatoes can easily be added to your sandwich. Mix into casseroles: Peas can easily be added to tuna casserole or how about hiding veggies in macaroni and cheese? Check out the link below for the recipe for Hidden Veggie Mac and Cheese. Add color to your meals and snacks by adding fruit. Keep a bowl of fruit on the counter or table for your family during the day as a snack. Buy a variety of frozen, dry, and canned fruit to keep on hand. Fruit can easily be added to your morning oatmeal or yogurt, or tossed onto a salad at lunch or supper. Try to avoid fruits canned in syrup or 100% juice in an effort to reduce your sugar consumption. The least amount of sugar is found in fruits canned in water. Make a fruit smoothie by blending low fat milk or yogurt with frozen or fresh fruit (ex. bananas, peaches, or strawberries). Cover 50% of your plate with fruit and vegetables at every meal. Diets rich in fruits and vegetables reduce the risk of developing cancer, heart disease, stroke and Type II diabetes.

5 Health Information with Amber Rogers (continued) So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31). 6 Health Information with Amber Rogers (CONTINUED) Christian Today I dare to say that our lives are more fragile than each of us probably realizes or truthfully admits. If we are honest with ourselves, we feel confidently secure that when we lay our head on our pillow at night, we will awaken to face another day. We do our best to control the variables in our lives with the hope that we can control our fitness level and health and even avoid obvious risky behaviors. But the truth of the matter is that we are all on borrowed time. If we take time to read the Bible, we are reminded that life this side of heaven is fleeting, even transient. And, if our lives are transient and the things of this world are transient, I sure do want to find something to anchor my soul that does not change and is not transient. First Peter 1:24 25 points me to the Unchangeable: For all flesh is like grass, and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls off, but the word of the Lord abides forever. The word abide used in this verse is the Greek word meno, which means to remain, endure, stand firm, to last. 2 The Word of the Lord, the Bible, remains through all things, endures through all times, stands firm against all circumstances, and will be lasting even until Christ s return for His people. From the beginning of creation the Lord has numbered my days, and He has numbered your days, your heart- beats, and your breath, too. Each one of us that walks on this earth has been given an appointed time to live and to die. Solomon reminds us in Ecclesiastes 3:1 2, There is an occasion for everything, and a time for every activity under heaven: a time to give birth and a time to die; a time to plant and a time to uproot. Even though I have been given a diagnosis, my life is no different from yours because the God of creation has designed each one of my breaths just as He has your own. 8 Waiting in Prayer God s Grace is Sure - Scripture: Isaiah 30:18-26 Taken from These Days, Sunday, September 30, 2018 Waiting In Prayer Therefore the Lord waits to be gracious to you;..blessed are all those who wait for him. Isaiah 30:18 It is hard for me to be still. I work, do errands and yard work, cook and clean, putter. My to-do list is unending. Over the years I ve learned that I rarely get it all done in one day, and so sometimes I just take tasks off the list. And sometimes, to increase the odds that I ll do things for enjoyment, I add things: go for a walk, read a book, call a friend. I even pray as if it is on my to-do list, getting it done in the morning before the rest of my day starts, and when I am surprised when it feels like a chore! To wait for the Lord is a different matter than running through my prayer list or reading the day s devotional. To quiet my mind takes practice, letting go of the idea that I know the direction my prayers will take. The point of my prayer times is to spend time with God, bringing my joys and concerns and also being open to God s movement in my life. Lord, let me be still so that I can rest in your presence.
