1 Office Hours: St. Mary/St. Benedict Parish 9am - 3pm Monday - Friday Rectory: 2207 Third St. SE., Canton, OH Facility Manager: Shawn Roush Rev. Benson C. Okpara, Ph.D., Pastor Sacristan: Brenda Jones OfficeStM-StB@sbcglobal.net 1602 Market Avenue South, Canton, OH Sally David Secretary: Christine Freese January 27, 2019 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time MISSON STATEMENT: We are people of God, celebrating our faith as a parish. With diverse roots and unique talents, we strive to live our baptismal commitment to love and serve God and neighbor. As we gather in prayer and worship to praise our Lord, we share a communion of faith, grace and service. We endeavor to live as Christians by reaching out to our brothers and sisters, proclaiming the Word, demonstrating compassion, and by sharing our faith through evangelization in order to make our parish a community of love and service. The year acceptable to the Lord is this year. The day that is holy is this day. The time to listen is now. What sort of year will you have? What sort of day? God s help is always here. What you do with each day can be holy and acceptable to the Lord if you but listen to and act on God s word.

3 Washington D.C., Jan 19, 2019 / 04:00 pm (CNA).- By Jeanne Marie Hathway Attendees at the 2019 March for Life saw an unannounced appearance from Vice President Mike Pence, a video message from President Trump, a strong bipar san speaker line-up, and a secular science theme. But the most surprising sight of the day, at least for one 12-year -old first- me marcher, was the number of children. There are more kids here than adults! said Angela from Rockville, Maryland. A crowd of 100,000 people marching on the poli cally divisive issue of abor on, in the middle of the country s longest-ever government shutdown no less, might not seem like the place for kids. But Robin Diller was one of thousands of mothers present who would enthusias cally tell you otherwise: It s such a posi ve environment, a happy and joyful place....in addi on to the fun, Mr. Diller said he sees the March as a lesson in civic responsibility: It s important to show our kids what posi ve ac vism looks like. High school history teacher James Flannery loves the March for a similar reason. He said that his biggest concern for his students is apathy. That s why it s so reassuring to see so many of them here, to see them stand for something.... people... think of themselves as marching for many different life issues-- not just against abor on. Strive not to be a success but to be of value. Albert Einstein CHURCH OVERSEAS COMBINED COLLECTION January 26th & 27th Catholics have always responded to the needs of people everywhere. 4 ST. BLAISE February 2nd & 3rd Blessing of Throats Blessing of the Throats Feast: of St. Blaise In the Pastoral Care of the Sick: Rites of Anoin ng and Via cum it states: "Suffering and illness have always been among the greatest problems that trouble the human spirit... Part of the plan laid out by God's providence is that we should fight strenuously against all sickness and carefully seek the blessings of good health, so that we may fulfill our role in human society and in the Church." (1622) "In the United States the annual blessing of throats is a tradi- onal sign of the struggle against illness in the life of the Chris an. This blessing is ordinarily given during Mass or a celebra- on of the word of God on February 3, the memorial of Saint Blaise." (1624) "The blessing may be given by touching the throat of each person with two candles blessed on the feast of the Presenta on of the Lord (February 2) and which have been joined together in the form of a cross." Dwight Longenecker CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH II: THE MYSTERIES OF JESUS INFANCY AND HIDDEN LIFE PARAGRAPH 2; JESUS DIED CRUCIFIED III. CHRIST OFFERED HIMSELF TO HIS FATHER FOR SINS At the Last Supper Jesus an cipated the free offering of his life 610) Jesus gave the supreme expression of his free offering of himself at the meal shared with the twelve Apostles on the night he was betrayed. On the eve of his Passion, while s ll free, Jesus transformed the Last Supper with the apostles into the memorial of his voluntary offering to the Fathers will for the salva on of men; This is my body which is given for you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 611) The Eucharist that Christ ins tutes at that moment will be the memorial of his sacrifice. Jesus includes the apostles in his own offering and bids them perpetuate it. By doing so, the Lord ins tutes his apostles as priests of the New Covenant: For their sakes I sanc fy myself, so that they also may be sanc fied in truth. Rejoicing in the L must be your strength (Nehemiah 8:2-4a, 5-6, 8-10). page 4
