2 MOUNT JEZREEL BAPTIST CHURCH KOINONIA BIBLE INSTITUTE Winter/Spring 2017 (February 28, 2017 May 20, 2017) PURPOSE: The purpose of the Koinonia Bible Institute is to glorify God through developing, coordinating, and implementing a structured Bible-centered curriculum where each student will concentrate on specific subjects for a period of 12 weeks (2 Tim. 2:15, 2 Peter 3:18, Ephes. 4:11, 12). OBJECTIVES: Classes will assist students in: The Place to Go For Those Who Want To Know and Grow Developing competency and knowledge of the doctrines of the Bible; Developing a mature relationship with God through prayer, study of scriptures and meditation; Developing spiritual enthusiasm and zeal for communicating the Word of God to others; and Developing a sense of purpose and to set out to put God s Word in action by helping one or more of the following: the poor, broken hearted, blind, bruised, and/or the captives. REGISTRATION AND COST INFORMATION: Registration will begin on Sunday, February 19, 2017, and paper packets will be available in the lobby or in the Administrative Office. Registration via the internet will begin on Wednesday, February 22, Completed registration forms can be transmitted at any time up to midnight on Sunday, February 26, 2017, via the Internet or downloaded and given to Trustee Carolyn Alston or on any given Sunday after 7:55 am or 10:55 am services in the Administrative Office. Forms may also be ed to Trustee Carolyn Alston at calston@mtjezreel.com. Early registration will ensure availability of your desired class. Please select up to three classes (1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd choice) in case the first choice is unavailable. Registration for non-mjbc members is $25. The cost of books for a class is the student s responsibility. Students cannot be registered without the last four digits of their social security number. All students are asked to come to class with their Bibles, pen/pencil, paper, and a willingness to learn. Classes are filled on a firstcome-first-served basis. All classes provided through Mount Jezreel s Koinonia Bible Institute will be based on Christian principles and the Baptist doctrine. Students may therefore be required to join in prayer, remember and recite scriptures, and/or perform other assignments related to Christian Biblical Teachings. -2-
3 CLASS SCHEDULES AND OFFERINGS: Classes for this session will be held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and, Saturdays. On Tuesday evening, there will be a general prayer and praise service in the Fellowship Hall between 6:45 pm and 7:15 pm. Immediately after, students will report to their respective classes for the remainder of the evening session. A light dinner will be served, free of charge, from 6:00 pm - 6:40 pm for those attending Tuesday night classes. Tuesday classes will be taught from 7:15 pm 9:00 pm. Wednesday classes will be taught from 12 noon to 1:00 pm. Saturday classes will be taught from 9:00 am 10:30 am. All classes will begin and end promptly. Classes offered this session, with instructors, are as follows: This semester, classes will be offered as follows: 12 Week Courses: February 28 May Week Course: March 4 May 6 6 Week Course: February 28 April 4 5 Week Courses: February 28 March 28 & April 4 May 2 12 Week Courses Tuesday Night Classes February 28, 2017 May 16, 2017 Doctrine of Salvation (CLS 4005) Course Description: This course examines salvation from the viewpoint of grace and regeneration. Grace looks at God s unmerited favor toward man, while regeneration looks at the process by which God transmits Himself into the soul of man and makes him new. Textbook: The Holy Bible; The Journey into Discipleship by Tommy Higle Instructor: Deacon Robert Barnard 30 Life Principles: A Study for Growing in Knowledge and Understanding God (ST 940) Course Description: This Bible study has been developed to help answer questions and encourage growth in a relationship with Jesus Christ. It will serve as a guide to help one grow in the knowledge, service, and love of God. It will review the biblical principles taught about having a lifetime of spiritual success and avoiding traps of ineffectiveness and spiritual misery. Textbooks: The Holy Bible and 30 Life Principles by Dr. Charles F. Stanley Instructors: Deacon James Sheppard and Deacon Daphney Sheppard Equipping the Church Choir for Ministry (MU 102) Course Description: The focus of this course is on developing mature, skilled disciples within the music and arts ministry. We will study the biblical foundations of music ministry and explore the theological perspectives of music in worship. We will examine the roles and responsibilities of choir members and choir leaders in the contemporary Christian church. Additionally, we will cover basic aural, visual, and vocal experiences in dictation and sight singing. Students will apply their knowledge of intervals and rhythms to sing simple melodies. 4 Marriage Preparation (MP 210) Course Description: The Marriage Preparation Class is for engaged couples or those couples contemplating engagement. The class is MANDATORY for all couples planning to be married at Mt. Jezreel Baptist Church. The fee for the class is $50 for members and $100 for non-members, which covers all course materials and assessment tools. Textbook: The Holy Bible Instructors: Rev. Kevin and Sis. Sandy Fennell 12 Week Course Wednesday Class March 1, 2017 May 17, 2017 Prophets and Their Message (CLS 1041) Course Description: Overview of the historical character of the entire prophetic ministry in the Old Testament, focusing on the backgrounds, time periods, places, events, people, and archaeology of the Old Testament section of the Bible. Textbooks: The Holy Bible and The Prophet and His Message: Reading Old Testament Prophecy Today by Michael James Williams Instructor: Pastor Eldridge Spearman 12 Week Course Saturday Class March 4, 2017 May 20, 2017 How to Accurately Interpret the Bible (CLS 1006) Course Description: This course is designed to lead the students to employ the resources and tools of hermeneutics. With these tools, students will engage in biblical analysis during the class period. Textbook: The Holy Bible and Interpreting the Scriptures by Kevin Conner and Ken Malmin Instructor: Sister Vera Hollingsworth 10 Week Course Saturday Class March 4, 2017 May 6, 2017 Music and Worship (CLS SP0032) Course Description: This course will look at music as an aid to worship. Students will look at different styles and genres of music and their relationship to varying styles and worship experiences. The study will include classical, contemporary, gospel, spirituals, jazz, hymns, and other traditional and non-traditional types of music. It looks into prayer as the channel of communication of the believer to the Father. Textbooks: The Holy Bible and Lord Teach Us to Pray by Andrew Murray Instructor: Rev. Pertina Scott Effective Bible Reading (CLS 1004) Course Description: In this course methods and approaches to Bible study will be identified which can lead to spiritual growth and Christian maturity. Areas that will be covered include the structure of the Bible and resources for personal study. Textbooks: The Holy bible and How to Study and Teach the Bible by Julius R. Scruggs Instructor: Rev. LaWanda Kamalidiin Mental Health First Aid Course Description: Mental Health First Aid teaches participants a five-step action plan, to support someone developing signs of a mental illness or in an emotional crisis. Like CPR, Mental Health First Aid prepares participants to interact with a person in crisis and connect the person with help. First Aiders do not take on the role of professionals they do not diagnose or provide any counseling or therapy. Instructor: Sister Terri King Textbook: To be announced in class Tuesday Class April 4, 2017 May 2, 2017 Introduction to the Bible (CLS 1001) Course Description: An introduction to the sixty-six (66) books of the Bible, its origin, and the important events, periods, and personalities that led to the development of the Bible in its present form. 6 The Doctrine of Prayer (CLS 4014) Course Description: This course is designed to teach the fundamental purpose, principles, and power of prayer. It looks into prayer as the channel of communication of the believer to the Father. Textbooks: The Holy Bible and Lord Teach Us to Pray by Andrew Murray Instructor: Rev. Pertina Scott CREDIT/AUDIT POLICY: Classes taught at the Bible Institute can be taken for credit (to be used toward graduation) or audit (not for credit or graduation). Students shall attend 80% of all classes to receive credit for the course taken. Special approval may be provided to miss more classes by the instructor(s) prior to absences. If not approved in advance, students who miss more classes will not receive credit. These students may switch from taking the class for credit to audit. Courses audited can be repeated to obtain credit. Students who do not wish to take classes for credit, may audit them by checking the box marked Audit. If this box is not checked, it will be assumed that the student is taking the class for credit. These students auditing classes are, however, still required to complete a registration form and pay the registration fee(s). COURSE NUMBERING SYSTEM/CREDIT DESIGNATION The Institute uses a two-letter prefix to identify the subject area and the three-digit number to identify courses according to the following system: BE Biblical Exposition HI History PE Physical Education BM Business Management MA Math ST Special Topics CH Children (6-10) MI Missions TH Theology CS Corel Application (Computer) MP Marriage Preparation TN Teen Classes EC Early Childhood (3-5) MS Microsoft UR Urban Ministries EM Educational Ministry MU Music CLS Christian Leadership School FS Foundational Studies OR Orientation 100 Basic Classes 1 Credit 200 Intermediate Classes 2 Credits 300 Advanced Classes 3 Credits 900 Special Topics/Electives 1-2 Credits GRADUATION/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To be eligible for graduation from the Koinonia Bible Institute one must meet the following requirements: 3 basic courses (100 level courses) which are 1 credit each 2 intermediate courses (200 level courses) which are 2 credits each 1 advanced topic credit (300 level course) 3 credits each 2 special topic credits (100 level courses or special topic classes, i.e., orientation) Basic Credits 3 classes x 1 credit = 3 credits Intermediate Credits 2 classes x 2 credits = 4 credits Advanced Credits 1 class x 3 credits = 3 credits *Special Topics 2 classes x 1 credit = 2 credits Total 12 credits Special topic classes are those classes taught over the summer and/or holidays. Most of these classes are less than 12 weeks. The orientation class is a special topic class that is equivalent to one credit. Students may also take a two-credit class to fulfill their special topics credits. Please note: Discipleship, Survey of the Old Testament, and Survey of the New Testament are mandatory classes for graduation. -6-
